- #3 So, let’s talk to you about Neustar and what we do. Years ago, when I wanted to reach someone, life was simple. The only thing I could do was call, the only device I had was a black rotary corded phone and the only destination I could call was a place – a home or businessand then I would ask if the person I wanted to speak to was there.…then in 1996 the world began to change.
- #4 While I still used the same old phone, and while I could still make only a voice call to a place – that home could now be on a network that wasn’t part of the Bell system. So for the first time, the call needed to ask “WHERE” do I go? And the most efficient way to provide the correct, authoritative answer to this question was to set up a central clearinghouse – and so Neustar was born.
- #5 In the years since then, my life has gotten more complicated. In the late 90’s I got a PC and joined The Well to access email and the WebI got a cell phone to make not just voice calls, but to text and send pictures. So I wasn’t just contacting a home anymore and asking if my friend was there – I now had access to Amazon and Google over the web, to my friends via text, etc.
- #6 …And with the addition of an iPad and my Apple TV, my expectations of what I can get, when and where have skyrocketed. At work, I’m very demanding. At home it is even worse. I want access to all my music, to my movies, to games, to the latest news, to Vanity Fair and anything else I may want anytime, anywhere and on any of the devices I own. Simple. But what does this look like from the point of view of a poor dumb network that has to find me and where I am, to make sure it is me, find my stuff and get it to me? What does this look like from the point of view of a service provider that has to contract with and support hundreds of thousands of application developers? …Or the movie studio that has to contract with thousands of service providers to digitally ship its movies? …Or the retailer who wants to use barcode promotions to help me get the best deal but has to contract with multiple barcode technologies, hundreds of equipment manufacturers and thousands of service providers?
