INTROI'UCTION
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
I am grateful to Allah for having read the manuscript of
tvtuslnn-CmrsrrAN DIALoGUE and being asked to write an
introduction to this remarkably eye-opening book' Anyone
interested in comparative religion will find in this book many
surprisesthat chailenge what many oncebelievedto the absolute
truths.
This work by Dr. HasanM. Baagil reflectshis meticulousand
painstaking effort to presenthis findings clearly andconciselyand
if,o.o,rgtttyl As a reiult of his studyof Christianity andthe Bible
olr., u'fo* year period,Dr. Baagil, a dedicatedMuslim, learned
not only that Christians differ in their basic beliefs (Trinity'
Divinity of Jesus, etc.),but do not know thatthe Chwch doctrine
contradicts the Bible numerous times and that the Bible even
contradictsitselfl His conversations
with christian clergy andlaity
dwing this period of study have provided the impetus for the
MUSLD{-CMISTIAN DIALOGUE.
ThereaderswillbesurprisedtoleamthatintheBibleJesus
(PBUH) never claimed to be God; that Jesusdid not die on the

by many other prophets, andevenby disbelievers;andthat Jesus
himself prophesied the adventof the ProphetMuhammad'peace

must be raisedafterwitnessingsuchclear contradictionsis: Is the
Bible God's Word? The efforthereby Dr' Baagitis not intended

to the Prophet Muhammadsome600 yearsafterthe life of Jesus,

(knowingly or unknowingly) in the message
that Jesusbrought.
This book shouldprove to be very valuableassetto both Muslims
and Christians, particularly given the interestin dialoguesbetween
fwo faiths. God willing, this book will be an effective tool for
Muslims in our efforts to invite Christians to Islam.Conversely,
Christians should become more aware of what in fact theBible
says and what Jesus(PBUH) actually taught. as a result of
studying this book. Indeed, asa Muslim the hopeis that the Non-
Muslim will accept the Truth andbearwitnessto the Onenessof
Allah andthatMuhammadis His slaveservantandMessenger.
May Allah rewardDr. Baagil for his effortsto dispeldarkness.

THE FIRST CONTACT BETWEEN
A CHRISTIAN AND A MUSLIM
C. Why havetherebeenin the last decademanydiscussions
held
betweenChristiansandMuslims abouttheir beliefs?
M. I think because we both haveseveralthingsin common. We
believe in the One Creator who had sentmany Prophets and in
JesusastheMessiahaswell asto theWord of Godu*rich hadbeen
deniedby the Jews.
Ow Holy Qur'anmentionsin Suah 3:45:"[Reurember]
when
the angels said,'oOMary! Verily Allah givesyou the glad tidings
of a Word from him, his namewill be MessiahJesus, the sonof
Mary, held in honor in this world andin the hereafter, andof those
who arenearto Allah."
Dialogues have beenheld everywherein Europe.Canada.the
USA and Australia. Even the Vatican is not spared where
discussionswere held betweenVatican theologiansandEgyptian
Muslim scholars
in Romein 1970andin Cairoin 1974and 1978.
Also between Vatican theologians and Saudi Arabian Muslim
scholarsin Romein1974. Many timesin Colombo, not to mention
Muslims invited by manychurchesto presentIslam.
C. If Christianityis nearlyfwo thousandyearsold andIslam more
than fourteen hundredyears,why were thesediscussions
not held
centuriesago?
M. For the last three to four cenftries many Asian andAfrican
countries dominated by Muslims were colonized by Britain,
France,Holland, Belgium, Spain and Porfugal. Many Christian
mission coloniststried to convertasmanyMuslim astheycould
by whatever means they had,by giving them medicalffeatment,
clothes, food. jobs to thepoor, but only a fewwere converted.
A
small part of the elite were convertedto Christianitybecauseof

their prejudice that Christianity brought them to their civilization
and progressofknowledge. They had a rryrong
notion because
this
progress was aftained after the separationofstate andchurchin
Europe.
After the Second World War many Muslims from Asian and
African countries were emigrating asworkers andprofessionals to
the Western Hemisphere, vrtrich brought them more in contact
with Christians. Also studentswere active in introducingIslam.
C. Do you see other reasonswhy many dialogues were held
nowadaysevenby their respectivemissions?
M. I think the gapbetweenboth is coming smalleraseachis more
tolerant, although both are still competing in getting more
converts. I still remember my Christianteacherwho usedto say,
"Muhammad the impostor. the dreamer.the epileptic." You now
find fewer writers depictingIslam in sucha manner.
We Muslims feel closerto the Christiansthanto the Jewsand
disbelieversas the Qur'an prophesied in Surah5:82:"thouwilt
find the most vehement of mankind in hostility to those who
believe (to be) the Jewsandthe idolaters. And thou wilt find the
nearestof them in affectionto thosewho believe(to be) thosewho
say: Lo! We areChristians. This is because
thereareamongthem
priestsand monks (i.e. personsentirely devotedtotheserviceof
God. aswere the Muslims), andbecause
they arenot proud."
SomeChristiandenominationsaremakingtremendousprogress
now by acknowledgingforthe first time in history thatMuhammad
(PBUH) descendedfrom Ishmaelthroughhis secondsonKedar.
The Davis Dictionaryof theBible. 1980,sponsored
by theBoard
of Christian Education of the Presbyterian Churchin the USA,
writes undertheword Kedar:"... A tribe descended
from Ishmael
(Gen.25:13)...The
peopleof KedarwerePliny'sCedrai,
andfrom
their tribe Mohammed ultimately arose." The Intemational

the most important, and thus in latertimesthe namecameto be
applied to all the wild tribes of the dessert. It is through Kedar
(Arab. Keidar) that Muslirn genealogistsfface the descent of

Also Smith's Bible Dictionarywill not staybehindandprints

The biggest asset brought by Muslim immigrantsto the
Westem hemisphereis not theirmanpowerbut the Islamwhich is
now taking root here. Many mosquesand Islamic Centersare
establishedand many are revertedto Islam. I prefer theword
reverted andnot converted.

C. If all three religions, Judaism, Christianity and Islam, are
claiming to emanatefrom the One God andsameCreator, why do
they differ?
M. All Prophets from Adam to Muhammad(PBUT) were sent
with the samemessage:
that is, the total submissionof mankindto
Allah. This submissionin Arabic is calledis calledIslam;Islam
means also Peace, peace betweenthe CreatorandHis creatures.
Unlike the names Judaism andChristianiry.this nameIslam has
been given by Allah, the CreatorHimself. asmentionedin Surah
5:3: "This day I have perfectedyour religion for you and
completed My favor on you. and have chosenfor you Islam as
your religion." Neither the nameJudaismnor Christianityis found
in the Bible, not evenin a Biblc dictionary. No IsraeliteProphet
mentionedthe word Judaism.Jesusnever ciaimed to establish
Christianiryon earth and never called himself a Christian. The
word Christianity is mentionedonly three times in the New
Testament
andfirst in Antioch."
Later by King AgrippaII to Paulin Acts26:28:"ThenAgrippa
saiduntoPaul,Almost thoupersuadest
me to be a Christian."
So the name Christian was first given by foes rather than
friends. And finall1'byPeterin his letterto comfbrtthe faithfulin
I Peter 4:16: "Yct if an;-mansufferasa Christian, let him not be
ashamed.

son's son, and Sarai his daughter-in-law,his sonAbram'swife,
and they went forth with them from Ur of the Chaldees,to go into
the land of Canaan;andthey cameunto Haran anddwelt there."
M. So Abraham who wasborn in Ur of Chaldeescould not have
been a Jew. First becauseUr of ChaldeeswasinMesopotamia,
which is now part of Iraq. He wasthenmore anArab than a Jew.
Secondly the name Jew came after the exstence of Judah, the
great-grandsonof Abraham (seechartonpage 12).Readfirther.

C. "...and Abraham was seventy and hve years old when he

M. In Surah3:65:"O peopleof the Scripture(JewsandChristians)!
Why do you dispute about Abraham, while the Torah andthe
Gospelwere not revealedtill after him? Haveyou thenno sense?"
And in Surah 3: 67: "Abraham was neither a Jew nor a
Christian, but he wasa tme Muslim (worshiperof nonebut Allah

In Swah 2:140: "Or say you that Abraham.Ishmael,Isaac,

And who is moreunjustthanhewho concealsthe testimonyhe has

they were not Jews or Christians as the nameJewscameafter
Judahandthe nameChristianscamelong after Jesushad left.
C. It feel strangeto hearthe nameAllah. Why don't you sayGod
if you speakEnglish?
M. Yes, indeed, the name Allah seemsto be strange to non-
Muslims but this namehasbeenusedby all ProphetssinceAdam
wrtil Muhammad(PBUT). It is contractionof thefwo Arabic words
Al-Ilah, i.e. The God. By droppingthe letter "I" you will find the
word Allah. Accordingto its positionin anArabic sentence
it can
have the form Allaha which is closetotheHebrewnameofthe
Creator, i.e.Eloha. But the Jewsareusingwrongly the plural form
Elohim which denotesmore than one God. The word Allaha
sounds closerto the Aramaic word for God usedby Jesus, namely
Alaha (see Encyclopedia Britannica 1980 under Allah and
Elohim). So while thenameAllah is strange
to non-Muslims,it is
not strangeto all Prophetsfrom Adam to Muhammad(PBUT), as
they propagatedin principlethesameIslam.i.e.t"otal

Being. It is not subjectto phuality or gender, sothereis no such
thing as Allahs, or male or femaleAllah, asthereis Godsor God
and Goddess. It is confusing to use the word God as many
English-speaking Christians still considerJesusasGod' Even the
woid Creator is alsocon-firsing,
asmany Christiansstill maintain
that Jesushad createdthe world.
Not only the nameAllah is strange, but alsothe way Muslims
worship Allah with ablution, bowing kneeling, prostration and
fasting is strangeto non-Muslims,but not strangeto all Prophets'
While ablution (washingof face.arms,feet,andmoisteningof the
hair) prior to worship is abandoned
by modem Christians,it is still
required by Muslims and previous Prophets, as seen in the
following passagesof the Bible: Exodus 40:31-32:"AndMoses
and Aaron andhis sonswashedtheir handsandtheir feetthereat;
When they went into the tent of the congregation, andwhen they
carne near unto the altar, they washed;asthe Lord commanded
Moses." Although Paul mademanychangesin Jesus'
teaching,he
was still faithful in respectto ablution as seen in Acts2l:26:
"Then Paul took themen.andthe next da.vpurifying himself with
them enteredinto the temple..." Muslim women performtheir

A Christian will shiver in hearingthat Pilgrimageor Hajj asis
now done by Muslims by circumambulating around the sacred
stone Ka'bah in Mecca, had beenperformedby many Prophets.
evenby IsraeliteProphets.
C. I neverreadPilgrimageor sacredstonein theBible.
M. This hasbeenmentionedclearly severaltimesbut overlooked
by Bible readers:
1. Jacobon his way to Padan-aramsawa vision andbuilt the next
morning a pillar of stone which he called Beth-El"l.e.and
Houseof theLord (Genesis
28:18-19).
2. Years later the sameProphet,Jacob, wasorderedby Allah to
go to Beth-El (Genesis35:4,14.15).Jacob removed all the
strange Gods prior to going there. Later also Prophet
Muhammad(PBUH) removedall idols aroundthe sacredstone
Ka'bah in Mecca.
3. Another pillar wasbuilt by Jacobandhis father-in-lawLaban
(Genesis3l:45-49): "And Jacobtook a took a stone,andsetit

stones; and they took stones.andmadeanheap;andthey did

C. Why are Muslims calling otherpeopleto accepttheir belief,
then?
M. As Christiansaskthe Jewsto acceptJesusasthe Messiah we
Muslims ask the Christians as well as Jewsand all mankind to
accept Muharnmad (PBUH) as the Seal of all prophets. Our
Prophet Muhammad(PBUIO said:-'Convey
my message
evenone
ayah(verseof tlre Holy Qur'an)."
Also Isaiah m€ilimed in chapter 2l:13, ..TheBurdenupon
Arabiq" which mearn the responsibility of the Muslim Arabs, of
course of all Muslims now, to spreadthe Islam.Isaiahmentioned
fhis after he saw in a vision a chariotofassesanda chariotof
camels(21:7): "And he sawa chariotwith a coupleof horsemen,a
chariot of asses, and a chariot of camels; and he hearkened
diligently with muchheed."
The chariot of assesfumed out to be Jesuswho entered
Jerusalem(Iohn 12:14;Matthew2t:5). Who thenwasthechariot
of camels? It could not be otherthanMuhammad(pBUH) who
came about six hundredyearsafter the adventof Messiah. If this
is not accepted,
thenthisprophecyhasnot yet beenfulfilled.
C. Your explanationstimulatesme to review the Bible more
carefully. I would like to get more discussions
with you.
M. Yes, if you aresuccessful
in this world, it doesn'tmeanthatyou
will be successfulin the hereafter. The hereafteris muchbetter
and more lasting than this life. Peoplearenow becomingmore
materialistic and secular. Let uscometogetherseveraltimesand
discuss the differences frankly and without prejudice. Islam is
basedonreason,
andyou shouldnotjust acceptit. Evenyour Bible

THE DOCTBINE OF THE TRIIiIITY
M. Do you still believein the Trinity?
C. Sure; it is written in the FinstEpistle of John(5:7 and 8): ,.For
there are three that bear record in the heaven. the Father.the
Word, andthe Holy Ghost:arrdthesethreeareone.And thereare
three that bear witness in the earth, the spirit, andthe water, and
the blood: andthesethreeagreein one."
M. Oh,thatis in theKing James
Version,authorized
in 1611,and
formed the strongestevidencefor the Doctrine of the Trinity. But
now this part, "the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost:and
these are one," has been expunged in the Revised Standard
Version of 1952 and 1911 andin many otherBibles, asit was a
glossthathad encroachedon the Greektext.
I John5:7 and8 in the New American StandardBible readsas
follows: "And it is the Spirit who bearwitness, becausethe Spirit
is truth. For there are three that bearwitness, the Spirit antthe
water and the blood. andthe threeare in agreement."Also. in the
New World Translation of the Holy Scripture used by the
Jehovah's Witnesses, you will find: "For therearethreewitness
bearers. the spirit andthe waterandthe blood, andthe threearein
agreement."I canunderstandif you don't know thatthis important
part has been removed, but I wonder why manyministersand
preachersarenot awareofthis.
The Trinity is not Biblical, The Word Trinity is not evenin the
Bible or Bible dictionaries, was never taught by Jesusandwas
never mentionedby him. There is no basisor proof in theBible
whatsoeverfor the acceptance
of the Trinity.
C. But in Matthew 28:19 we srill find: ". ..baptizingthemin the
name of the Father, andof the Son.andof theHoly Spirit." This
partis not removedyet;is thisnot a proof of Trinity?

So frnally Jesusasked Philiphowto showthe appearance

when theangelssaid:"O Mary! Verily Allah givesyou glad tidings
of a Word from Him, his namewill be MessiahJesus, the sonof
Mary, held in honor in this world andthe Hereafter, andof those
who arenearto Allah." In both versesof the Holy Qur'an Jesusis
also called a Word from Allah, i.e.a Word comingfrom Allah or
belonging to Allah, in correspondence
with I Corinthians
3:23:
"And ye are Christ's; andChristis God's." JohnI :I shouldalso
have beenwritten: "... and the WordwasGod's."Themistake
could have been in the translation from Aramaic to Greek'
deliberately or not. In the Greek language Theos is God, but
Theou meansGod's (see a Greek Dictionary, Greek Bible, or

C. Why is Jesus

M. The creation of Jesusin the womb of Mary waswithout the

M. Let us see passages
in the Bible supporlingthe evidence'Do
you give more weight to what Jesus said or to hearsayof the
disciples,apostleandotherwitnesses?
C. Of coursemoreto Jesushimself.
M. That is in accordance
with what Jesussaid(Matt. l0:24): "The
disciple is not abovehis master, nor the servantabovehis lord'"
C. But Jesushimself said that he will arisefrom the dead(Luke
24:46): "And said unto them, Thus it is written' and thus it
behovedChrist to suffer, andto rise from the deadthe third day."
M. Suffering is often exaggerated
in the Bible andtermed"dead"
as Paul said (I Corinthians15:31): "I protestbyyourrejoicing
which I have in Christ, I die daily." (i.e. I sufferdaily). Here are
someof theproofs:
1. On thecrosshebeseeched
God for heip (Matthew27:46):"My
God. my God, why hast thou forsaken me?" And in Luke
2242 "Saying, Fatherif thou be willing, removethis cup from
me: nevertheless
not my will. but thine,be done."(This cup is
thecupof death.)
2. Jesus'prayer not to die on the crosswasaccepted
by God,
according to Luke, Hebrervs and James. Then how could he
still die on the cross? (Luke 22:43):"Andthereappearedan
angel unto him from heaven,strengthening
him." It meansthat
an angel assuredhim that God would not left him heipless'
(Hebrews 5:7): "Who in thedaysof his flesh.u'henhe (Jesus)
had offered up prayers and suppiications with strongcrying
and tearsunto him that wasablesavehim from death, andwas
heardin that he feared."
Jesus' prayer were hereheard, which meansansweredin a
positive way by God. (James5:16):"...The effectualfervent
prayer of a righteous man availethmuch." Jesushimself said
(Matthew 7:7-10): "Ask, and it shall be givenyou; seek.and

him who knockethit shall be opened.Or what man is thereof
you, whom if his sonaskbread, will he give him a stone?Or if
he ask fish, will he give him a serpent?"Ifall Jesus'prayer
were acceptedby God, including not to die on the cross, how
could he still die on the crossthen?
3. His legs were not brokenby the Romansoldiers(John 19:32-
33): "Then camethesoldiers.andbrakethelegsof the frst, and
of the otherwhich wascrucified with him. But whenthey came
to Jesus, andsawthat he wasdeadalready, they brakenot his
legs." Canyou rely on thesesoldiersfor pronowrcingthe death.
or did they want to saveJesusasthey found him innocent?
4. If Jesusdied on the cross, his bioodwould clot andno blood
would gushout of his body whenhis sidewaspierced. But the
Gospel statesthat blood and water cameout;(John19:34):
"But one of the soldierswith a spearpierced his side, and
forthwith camethereout blood andwater."
5. When thePharisees

answered(Matt. 12:40):"For asJonaswasthreedaysandthree
nights in the whale's belly, so shall the Sonof man be three
days andthreenightsin the heartof the earth." Disregardnow

IIUHAIUMAD IN THE BIBLE
Borh lshmael and Isaac Were Blessed
M. Why did Ishmaeiandhis motherHagarleaveSarah?
m. After Isaac was weaned, his mother Sarah saw Ishmael
mocking him, and didn't want Ishmael to be heir with her son
Isaac (Genesis21:8-10): "And the child grew, andwasweaned:
and Abraham made a great feast the same day that Isaacwas
weaned. And Sarahsawthe sonof Hagarthe Egyptian, which she
had bom unto Abraham, mocking. Wherefore she said unto
Abraham, Cast out this bondwoman and her son:for the sonof
this bondwomanshallnot be heir with my son, evenwith Isaac'"
M. Isaac was about two yearsold whenhewasweaned'Ishmael
was then sixteenyearsbecause
Abrahamwaseighty-sixyearsold
when Hagarbore Ishmaelandwasa hundredyearsold when Isaac
was bom, according
to Genesis16:16:"And Abramwasfourscore
and six years old, when'Hagar bare Ishmael to Abram," and
Genesis 2l:5: "And Abrahamwasanhundredyearsold, whenhis
son Isaac was born rnto him." Genesis21:8-10 is then in
conffadiction with Genesis21:14-21whereIshmaelwasportrayed
as a baby put on the shoulderof his mother, called lad andchild.
when both left Sarah:"And Abrahamroseup early in the morning,
and took bread, and a boftle of water. andgaveit unto Hagar,
putting it on her shoulder,
andthechild.... Arise,lift up thelad.
and hold him in thine hand..." This wasthe profile of a baby and
not of a teenager.SoIshmaelandhis motherHagarleft Sarahlong
before lsaacwasbom. According to the Islamic version,Abraham
took Ishmael and Hagar and made a new settlementin Mecca.

water; this becamethen an Islamic ritual for the annualpilgrimage
in Mecca by millions of Muslims from all over the world. The
well of water mentionedin Genesis21:19 is stillpresent, now
called Zarnzarrr. Both Abraham and Ishmael; later built the holy
stone Ka'bah in Mecca. The spotwhereAbrahamusedto perform
prayers near the Ka'bah is still present, now called Maqam
Ibrahim, i.e. the Station of Abraham. During the days of
Pilgrimage, Pilgrims in Mecca and Muslims all over the world
commemorate the offering of Abraham and Ishmael by
slaughteringcattle.
m. But the Bible mentionsIsaacto be sacrificed.
M. No, the Islamic version statesthat covenant betweenGod,
Abraham and his only son Ishmael was madeandsealedwhen
Ishmael wassupposed
to be sacrificed. And on the samedaywere
Abraham, Ishmaelandall men of the householdcircumcisedwhile
Isaacwas not even bomyet(Genesis17:24-27):
"AndAbraham
was ninety years old and nine, when he wascircumcisedin the
flesh of his foreskin. And Ishmaelhis sonwasthirteenyearsold,
when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. In the
selfsamedaywasAbrahamcircumcised.andIshmaelhis son.And
all the men of his house, bom in the house, and boughtwith
moneyof the stranger,were circumcisedwith him."
A yearlaterIsaacwasbom andcircumcisedwhenhe waseight
days old (Genesis21:4-5): "And Abraham circumcised
his son
Isaac being eight days old. as God had commanded
him. And
Abraham was an hundredyearsold, whenhis sonIsaacwasborn
unto him."
So whenthecovenant
wasmadeandsealed
(circumcision
and
sacrifice) Abraham wasninet-v-nine
andIshmaeithirteenyearsold.
Isaac *'as born a year later whenAbrahamwasa hundredyears
old.

The descendantsof Ishmael, Prophet Muhammad (PBUT),
including all Muslims, remain faithfrl until today this covenantof
circumcision. In their prayers at least five times a day the Muslims
include the praiseof Abrahamandhis descendants
with the praise
of Muhammad (PBUH) andhis descendants.
m. But in Genesis22 it is mentionedthatIsaacwasto be sacrificed!
M. I know it, but you will see the contradiction there. It is
mentioned there "thine only sonIsaac."Shouldit not havebeen
unitten "thine only sonIshmael" when Ishmael wasthirteen years
old and Isaac not born yet? When Isaacwasborn Abrahamhad
two sons. Because of chauvinismthe nameIshmaelwas changed
to Isaac in all of Genesis22, but God hadpreservedthe word
"only" to showuswhat it shouldhavebeen.
The words "I will multiply thy seed" in Genesis
22:17was
applied earlier to Ishmael in Genesis16:10. Was thewholeof
Genesis 22 not applicable to Ishmael then? "I will makehim a
great nation" had been repeated fwice for Ishmael in Genesis
17:20andGenesis
21:18, andneverappliedto Isaacat all.
m. The Jews and Christians maintain that Isaacwassuoeriorto
Ishmael.
M. That is what they saybut not what the Bible states(Genesis
15:4): "And, behold, the word of the Lord came rmto him
(Abraham), saying, This (Eliezer of Damascus)shallnot be thine
heir, but that shall come forth out of thine own bowelsshall be
thine heir." So Ishmaelwasalsoheir.
Genesis 16:10: "And the angel of the Lord said unto her
(Hagar), I will multiply thy seedexceedingly, that it shallnot be
numberedfor multitude."
Genesis 17:20: "And as for Ishmael,I have heard thee:
Behold, I have blessed him, andwill makehim fruitful, andwill
makehim a sreatnation."

Genesis 21:13:"And alsoof the sonof bondwoman
will make
a greatnation because
he is thy seed."
Genesis 2I :18: "Arise, lift up the lad, andhold him in thine
hand;for I will makehim a greatnation."
Deuteronomy

and another hated, and they have born him children, both the
beloved and the hated; and if the firstborn sonbe hersthatwas
hated: Then it shall be, when he makethhis sonsto inherit that
which he hath, that he may not make the son of the beloved
firstbom beforethe sonof the hated, which is indeedthe firstborn:
But he shall acknowledgethe sonof the hatedfor the firstbom. by
giving him a double portion of all that he hath: for he is the
beginrring of his strength; the right ofthe firstborn is his." Islam
does not denyGod's blessingon Isaacandhis descendants'
but the
son of promise is Ishmael from whom later aroseMuhammad
(PBUH) asthesealof theProPhets.
m. But ChristiansandJewsclaim that Ishmaelwasan illegitimate
son.
M. That is what they say.but not what the Bible states. How could
a greatProphetlike Abrahamhavean illegal wife anda sonout of
wedlock!
Genesis16:3:"And Sarai.Abram'swife, took Hagarhermaid,
the Egyptian, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of
Canaan, andgaveher to her husbandAbram to be his wife." If the
marriagewas legal,how couldtheir offspringbe illegalthen!Is a
mariage befweenfwo foreigners,a ChaldeanandanEgyptian,not
more legal than a marriagebenveena man with a daughterof his
father? Whether it was a lie of Abraham or not, it is statedin
Genesis20:12:"And yet indeedshe(Sarah)is my sister;sheis the
daughter of my father, but not the daughterof my mother; andshe
becamemy wife."

The nameIshmaelwasalsochosenby Allah Himself (Genesis
l6: I I ); "And the Angel of the Lord saidunto her (Hagar),Behold,
thou art with child, and shaltbeara son.andshaltcall his name
Ishmael, because the Lord hath heard thy affliction." Ishmael
meansGod hears. And wherein the Bible is it unitten that Ishmael
was an Illegitimate son?
m. Nowhere in the Bible.
M. Long before both IshmaelandIsaacwerebom, Allah madea
covenantwith Abraham(Genesis15:18):"...saying,Unto thy seed
have I given this land, from the river of Egypt rurtothe greatriver,
the Euphrates." Was not the greaterpart of Arabia lying between
the Nile and the Euphrates, where later all the descendants
of
Ishmaelwere settling?
m. Do you mean that no land was promised to Isaac andhis
descendants?
M. We Muslims never deny that Isaac was also blessed. See
Genesisl7:8: "And I will give untothee,andto thy seed(Isaac)
after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of
Canaan,
for aneverlasting
possession;
andI will betheirGod."
Do you seealsothe differencethatAbrahamwasmentioned"a
stranger" in Canaan but not in the land betweenthe Nile and the
Euphrates. As a Chaldeanhe wasmore anArab thana Jew.
m. But the Covenant was madewith Isaacaccordingto Genesis
17:21: "But my covenant
will I establish
with Isaac,which Sarah
shall bearrnto theeat this time in the next year."
M. Doesthis excludeIshmael?Wherein the Bible doesit saythat
Allah would not makeany covenantwith Ishmael?
m. Nowhere.

Criterion of t|re Prophet Jeremiah
Jeremiah28;9:"The prophetwhich prophesiethof peace,when
the word of theprophet shall cometo pass, then shallthe prophet
beknown, that the Lord hathtruly senthim."
The word Islam also signifies Tranquillity, Peace.Peace
between the Creatorandhis creafures.
This prophecyofJeremiah
cannot be applied to Jesus.as he himself stated that he didn't
come for peace (Luke 12:51-53):
"Suppose
ye thatI am cometo
give peace on earth?I tell you, Nay; but ratherdivision: For from
henceforth there will five in onehousedivided, threeagainstfwo
and two againstthree. The fathershall be divided againstthe son,
and the sonagainstthe father;the motheragainstthe daughterand
the daughter against the mother; the mother in law againsther

Until Shiloh Come
This was a messageof Jacob to his childrenbeforehe died.
(Genesis49:l): "And Jacobcalledturtohis son,andsaid,Gather
yourselves together, that I may tell you that which shallbefall you
in the lastdays."
Genesis49:10:"The sceptre
shallnot departfiom Judah,nor a
lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come;andwrto him
shallthe gatheringof the peoplebe."
Shiloh is alsothenameof a town but its realmeaningis peace,
tranquilliry. rest, l.e., Islam. It could neverrefer to a town here.If
it referred to a person,it could be a comrption of Shaluah
[Elohim], l.e.Messenger

So the Israeliteprophethoodin the lineageof Isaacwould stop
as soon as Shiloh comes. This corresponds
with Surah2:133:

sons, "What will you worship after me?" They said,"We shall

The shift of prophethoodto anothernationwasthreatenedby
Jeremiah 31:36: "If thoseordinancedepartfrom beforeme, saith
the Lord, then the seed of Israel also shallcease
from beinga
nationbeforeme forever."Also hintedby Jesus
in Matthew21:43:
"Therefore say I turto you, The kingdom of God shallbe taken
away from you. and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits
thereof."

This work by Dr. HasanM. Baagil reflectshis meticulousand painstaking effort to presenthis findings clearly andconciselyand if,o.o,rgtttyl As a reiult of his studyof Christianity andthe Bible olr., u'fo* year period,Dr. Baagil, a dedicatedMuslim, learned not only that Christians differ in their basic beliefs (Trinity' Divinity of Jesus, etc.),but do not know thatthe Chwch doctrine contradicts the Bible numerous times and that the Bible even contradictsitselfl His conversations with christian clergy andlaity dwing this period of study have provided the impetus for the MUSLD{-CMISTIAN DIALOGUE. ThereaderswillbesurprisedtoleamthatintheBibleJesus (PBUH) never claimed to be God; that Jesusdid not die on the "rorr; ihut the miracles performedby Jesuswere alsoperformed by many other prophets, andevenby disbelievers;andthat Jesus himself prophesied the adventof the ProphetMuhammad'peace be upon them. All of thisplusmuchmoreis detailedfrom clear .on.i'r. passageof Bible scripture' The questionthat obviously must be raisedafterwitnessingsuchclear contradictionsis: Is the Bible God's Word? The efforthereby Dr' Baagitis not intended to derideChristianpeopleandcertainlynot to mock Jesusandhis teachings.elair foiUiOl The intent is obviously to point out thlt false ciarges, misrepresentationsand outright lies againstAllah

This book shouldprove to be very valuableassetto both Muslims and Christians, particularly given the interestin dialoguesbetween fwo faiths. God willing, this book will be an effective tool for Muslims in our efforts to invite Christians to Islam.Conversely, Christians should become more aware of what in fact theBible says and what Jesus(PBUH) actually taught. as a result of studying this book. Indeed, asa Muslim the hopeis that the Non- Muslim will accept the Truth andbearwitnessto the Onenessof Allah andthatMuhammadis His slaveservantandMessenger. • 7. %luslin Cbrislia, Qialogue THE FIRST CONTACT BETWEEN A CHRISTIAN AND A MUSLIM C. Why havetherebeenin the last decademanydiscussions held betweenChristiansandMuslims abouttheir beliefs? M. I think because we both haveseveralthingsin common. We believe in the One Creator who had sentmany Prophets and in JesusastheMessiahaswell asto theWord of Godu*rich hadbeen deniedby the Jews. Ow Holy Qur'anmentionsin Suah 3:45:"[Reurember] when the angels said,'oOMary! Verily Allah givesyou the glad tidings of a Word from him, his namewill be MessiahJesus, the sonof Mary, held in honor in this world andin the hereafter, andof those who arenearto Allah." Dialogues have beenheld everywherein Europe.Canada.the USA and Australia. Even the Vatican is not spared where discussionswere held betweenVatican theologiansandEgyptian Muslim scholars in Romein 1970andin Cairoin 1974and 1978. Also between Vatican theologians and Saudi Arabian Muslim scholarsin Romein1974. Many timesin Colombo, not to mention Muslims invited by manychurchesto presentIslam. C. If Christianityis nearlyfwo thousandyearsold andIslam more than fourteen hundredyears, why were thesediscussions not held centuriesago? M. For the last three to four cenftries many Asian andAfrican countries dominated by Muslims were colonized by Britain, France,Holland, Belgium, Spain and Porfugal. Many Christian mission coloniststried to convertasmanyMuslim astheycould by whatever means they had,by giving them medicalffeatment, clothes, food. jobs to thepoor, but only a fewwere converted. They had a rryrong notion because this progress was aftained after the separationofstate andchurchin Europe. After the Second World War many Muslims from Asian and African countries were emigrating asworkers andprofessionals to the Western Hemisphere, vrtrich brought them more in contact with Christians. Also studentswere active in introducingIslam. C. Do you see other reasonswhy many dialogues were held nowadaysevenby their respectivemissions? M. I think the gapbetweenboth is coming smalleraseachis more tolerant, although both are still competing in getting more converts. I still remember my Christianteacherwho usedto say, "Muhammad the impostor. the dreamer.the epileptic." You now find fewer writers depictingIslam in sucha manner. We Muslims feel closerto the Christiansthanto the Jewsand disbelieversas the Qur'an prophesied in Surah5:82:"thouwilt find the most vehement of mankind in hostility to those who believe (to be) the Jewsandthe idolaters. And thou wilt find the nearestof them in affectionto thosewho believe(to be) thosewho say: Lo! We areChristians. This is because thereareamongthem priestsand monks (i.e. personsentirely devotedtotheserviceof God. aswere the Muslims), andbecause they arenot proud." SomeChristiandenominationsaremakingtremendousprogress now by acknowledgingforthe first time in history thatMuhammad (PBUH) descendedfrom Ishmaelthroughhis secondsonKedar. The Davis Dictionaryof theBible. 1980,sponsored by theBoard of Christian Education of the Presbyterian Churchin the USA, writes undertheword Kedar:"... • 10. %luslin Cbrislian9i aloprn C. If all three religions, Judaism, Christianity and Islam, are claiming to emanatefrom the One God andsameCreator, why do they differ? M. All Prophets from Adam to Muhammad(PBUT) were sent with the samemessage: that is, the total submissionof mankindto Allah. This submissionin Arabic is calledis calledIslam;Islam means also Peace, peace betweenthe CreatorandHis creatures. Unlike the names Judaism andChristianiry.this nameIslam has been given by Allah, the CreatorHimself. asmentionedin Surah 5:3: "This day I have perfectedyour religion for you and completed My favor on you. and have chosenfor you Islam as your religion." Neither the nameJudaismnor Christianityis found in the Bible, not evenin a Biblc dictionary. No IsraeliteProphet mentionedthe word Judaism.Jesusnever ciaimed to establish Christianiryon earth and never called himself a Christian. The word Christianity is mentionedonly three times in the New Testament andfirst in Antioch." Later by King AgrippaII to Paulin Acts26:28:"ThenAgrippa saiduntoPaul,Almost thoupersuadest me to be a Christian." So the name Christian was first given by foes rather than friends. And finall1'byPeterin his letterto comfbrtthe faithfulin I Peter 4:16: "Yct if an;-mansufferasa Christian, let him not be ashamed. ..." -fhe first fto be called] Muslim on earthis not Muhammadbut Abraham who submittedtotally to Allah. Why don't you sayGod if you speakEnglish? M. Yes, indeed, the name Allah seemsto be strange to non- Muslims but this namehasbeenusedby all ProphetssinceAdam wrtil Muhammad(PBUT). It is contractionof thefwo Arabic words Al-Ilah, i.e. The God. By droppingthe letter "I" you will find the word Allah. Accordingto its positionin anArabic sentence it can have the form Allaha which is closetotheHebrewnameofthe Creator, i.e.Eloha. But the Jewsareusingwrongly the plural form Elohim which denotesmore than one God. The word Allaha sounds closerto the Aramaic word for God usedby Jesus, namely Alaha (see Encyclopedia Britannica 1980 under Allah and Elohim). So while thenameAllah is strange to non-Muslims,it is not strangeto all Prophetsfrom Adam to Muhammad(PBUT), as they propagatedin principlethesameIslam.i.e.t"otal submission, and the word Allah denotesthe personal nameof the Supreme l4
