Depression at the work place is common, often in SA places where we're supposed to receive healing and medical care are a source of great anxiety. We created #BuskingJoburg to activate the boring soulless Main Street Mall with some culture, after doing some research and seeing its success in transforming Jozi's Mining corridor we made a proposal for Baragwanath Hospital. We know of the state of public health and how something magical to make you forget your trauma could help you heal. The retarded HOD staff didn't approve it. Sad indeed, children would've loved the stimulation from clowns, magicians, dancers, instrumentalists and others we have in our network of Buskers.

2. What is Busking?
The word ‘Busk’ comes from the Spanish word “buskar” which means To seek and
to wonder. Today it’s a global movement of multidisciplinary
Outdoor performances which include music, theatre and a variety of circus acts.

3. Busking as an urban cultural activity is has a long history globally, and is common to all
nationalities who’ve been affected by urbanization.
From the days of King Henry when Busking was first outlawed to the invention of Marimba
by the Queen Marimba of Southern Africa. Public performance plays an important role in
giving voice to people, opening up spaces and encouraging social cohesion.
As Busking Joburg Inc we are part of the of the annual #InternationalBuskingDay
movement led by City of London, with more than 305 location in 6 continents, celebrated
on 22 July. This year Soweto and Johannesburg will be amongst these locations.
Artists such as Karen Zoid, Madala Kunene, Bra Hugh Masekela come from a Busking
background and still value this special platform to this day as the purest.

4. Music Therapy is defined as; “..the practice and use of music with people of all ages who
may suffer from a range of conditions, which may have psychological, physical and/or
neurological basis.” Global Adventist Healthcare Network
Furthermore; In all instances the music is clinically informed, and involves a variety of
techniques which include improvisation, playing of instruments, vocalisation and music
listening.
Africa has a long history of music therapy, almost all cultures in the continent have some
tradition based on the use of music for a form of healing.
The root meaning of the word Sa-Ngoma (traditional healers) testifies to this.

5. Why ‘Bara’?
• The principles which drive Chris Hani Baragwanath caregivers and staff are
worth celebrating and encouraging.
• The history of this international medical monument is a great feature of
our heritage. We are compelled to contribute to it’s preservation &
improvement.
• The staggering amount of patients (about 150'000 inpatient and 500'000
outpatient cases per year) registered calls for attention from all of society
to lend a hand in making quality health & healing accessible to all.
• Busking Joburg Inc identify with the values which are enshrined in the
constitution of CHBH. I.e, “…defend truth, integrity and justice for all, at all
times, to the benefit of patients, staff and the community.”

6. Busking Joburg Inc in partnership with relevant stakeholders intends to facilitate music
therapy busking for some patients at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital.
Busking Joburg Inc seeks to establish a sustainable relationship with more Artists, the
hospital and other medical practitioners in implementing innovative methods to health-
care.
To assist in changing of the negative perceptions; about apathetic staff, an unfriendly/toxic
environment, inadequate resources for the fostering of healing and rehabilitation, etc.

8. The Idea
Busking Joburg Inc proposes to partner with Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in
activating and animating identified areas in the hospital with performances.
When:
We propose launching this intervention on 18 July 2017, Nelson Mandela Day. Where
we propose coordinating 67 minutes of music therapy performances.
How:
With advise from Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital on the best times, we propose
distributing the performances across multiple parts of the hospital, purely for the
benefit of patients.
