muscles introduction (1).pptx
1. 1.1 - Investigating muscle strength
LO-1 Structure of the musculoskeletal system:
โข Diagnostic test to be done, in the mean-time other students will practice kahoot
โข students will be able to recognize the major muscles and their location.
โข Students will be able to describe and compare between types of muscles as well as
muscle fiber types.
โข Students will be able to label the Bones of the skeletal system identifying their
location.
โข Students will analyse types of bone.
โข Worksheet-1 will be done.
3. Introduction
โข Muscles make up approximately 40% of an adultโs body.
โข One type of muscle is skeletal muscle, attached to the skeleton.
โข Athletes work hard to:
๏ผStrengthen specific muscles
๏ผTrain them to tire less easily
โข Bodybuilders work on their muscles in a different way and train to
make them bigger.
โข How can you as a football player should train your muscles?
4. WATCH THE FOLLOWING LINK
(405) The Muscular System Explained In 6 Minutes โ YouTube
The main muscles of the body
There are three types of muscle:
1. Cardiac muscle in the heart
2. Smooth muscle in the organs
3. Skeletal muscle attached to the skeleton
6. Muscle types
There are three types of muscle in the body:
๏ง smooth muscle โ found in the internal organs and blood vessels -
this is involuntary
๏ง cardiac muscle โ found only in the heart - this is involuntary
๏ง skeletal muscle โ attached to the skeleton - this is voluntary
๏ง Involuntary muscles are not under our conscious control which
means we can't make them contract when we think about it.
๏ง Voluntary muscles are under our conscious control so we can move
these muscles when we want to.
7. Skeletal muscles
โข Skeletal muscles allow you to move.
โข They are attached to bones by tendons.
โข As the muscles contract: they pull on tendons causing the bones
around a joint to move
โข You have over 600 skeletal muscles, which are all involved in moving
parts of your body.
9. Summary and Assessment
Q2) Name the three types of muscle and state where each is found.
Name three muscles of the arm.
Q1) Choose the correct answer:
1) ------------ work hard to strengthen specific muscles and train them to tire
less easily.
a) Bodybuilders b) athletes c) officers
2) -------- work on their muscles in a different way and train to make them
bigger.
a) Officers b) athletes c) body builders
3) ------------ muscles allow you to move. They are connected to bones by --------
a) Skeletal muscle b) ligaments c) smooth muscles d) tendons
4) Heart muscle (------------) contracts approximately -------- times every
minute for your entire life and it does not tire.
Skeletal muscle b) cardiac muscle c) 120 d) 70
10. Q3) The main muscles of the human
body. Identify the main muscles (A
to I) in the human body. Use these
words:
pectoral muscle
bicep
abdominal muscle, quadricep
jaw muscle
Tricep
shoulder muscle
calf muscle
forearm muscle
11. The heart is odd one out
The heart is made from cardiac muscle
The bicep muscle (in the arm), the calf muscles ( in the legs) and the chest muscles are types of
skeletal muscles.
12. A basketball player wants to compare the strength
of his forearm with that of a footballer. Predict who
would have the most strength.
Basketball player, he uses his arm muscles more than
a footballer.
By exercising you can
increase the strength of
muscles.
Professional sportspeople
consider their training
very carefully to ensure
that they target specific
muscles.
They also test the
strength of their muscles
frequently to check their
progress.
13. ๏ง This figure shows a device to test the
strength of the forearm and hand.
๏ง A handgrip strength tester a device to
test the strength of the forearm and
hand.
๏ง The person squeezes the handle as
hard as they can. The result is then
displayed as a force (measured
in newtons).
14. Summary and Assessment
Q1)
1) Muscles can only ----------- and cannot -----------.
2) A ----------- ----------- a device to test the strength of the forearm
and hand. The person squeezes the handle as hard as they can. The result
is then displayed as a ----(measured in -------------).
3) By --------------------- you can you can increase the strength of muscles.
Q1) Which muscles are working?
List the main muscles used in each of the following activities:
(calf muscles, forearm muscles, face, biceps, triceps, tongue,
quadriceps)
a)hopping - -------------------------
b)writing - ----------------------------
c)eating - ----------------------------
d)doing a handstand. - --------------
doing a handstand
15. โข Muscles can only pull and cannot push.
โข 2) A handgrip strength tester a device
to test the strength of the forearm and
hand.
โข The person squeezes the handle as hard as
they can. The result is then displayed as
a force (measured in newtons).
โข 3) By exercising you can you can
increase the strength of muscles
โข Suggest which muscles you use when
climbing or hopping. (Any three muscles)
16. โข The manโs bicep muscle has torn or overstretched.
โข A strain is an injury in which muscle or tendon is
overstretched or torn.
17. Muscle cramps are caused by involuntary contractions of one or
more muscles โ the muscles contract, but then do not
relax.(Overuse of muscles, dehydration or muscle strain)
There are many causes of cramp but plenty of water and vitamins in
the diet may help to prevent them.
๏งBy drinking plenty of water and by taking
vitamins in the diet we can prevent muscle cramps.
Name two ways of preventing
muscle cramps.
