American Horror Story is an anthology horror drama TV series. Each season features a self-contained story in a different setting. Season 1 took place in a haunted house in Los Angeles. Season 2 will be set in a different locale, such as an asylum or prison, on the East Coast in the 1960s. Jessica Lange will play a sadistic nun, unlike her character in season 1. The show aims to leave viewers feeling unsettled after each episode.

UST as you are trying to sink
your teeth into e.tv’s local action
drama Heist, another title drops
right in front of your eyes. The
Alliance is a local TV sensation which
tells a cat-and-mouse story of a female
cop obsessed with catching a city crook
who runs an underground crime
syndicate.
The talented Sonia Mbele (pictured)
plays the lead character, Lydia, who is
part of the Directorate of Priority Crime
Investigation (DPCI). The DPCI taskforce
is focused on crimes such as corruption
(especially within government depart-
ments), serious economic crimes (i.e.
internet fraud, card fraud, cheque fraud,
counterfeit goods), and organised crime.
Essentially the show looks at real
crime stories in South Africa like illegal
diamond trading, drug cartels and
money laundering.
The ambitious Lydia, who is
desperate for a promotion, has made it
her life’s mission to catch the crime
kingpin known as Bra Jay, AKA the
Reserve Bank Governor of Soweto.
“I don’t think we have anything like it
on South African TV. This feels different
in many aspects, from the way we shoot
(to) the feel of the set and how it has been
written. I think it is on the level that
shows like The Fixer are on. The
dialogue is like one monologue after
another but the pacing is faster,”
she said.
“When I heard that Zani Nkosi was
behind it, I could not resist. I wanted to
be part of it because he always knows
what he is doing,” she added.
Mbele dug into her character who is a
“badass” cop with a personality shaped
by her tough upbringing.
“Lydia is cold and she feels nothing.
She was raised by both parents, where
the father was meek and the mother ran
the household. So to her that’s how she
knows life thanks to a mother who
cracked the whip. To her, men are not
intimidating. She doesn’t fear them
and she works with male detectives and
she is tougher. Sometimes in a male
environment when you are a women
you try and be one of the guys, but she
doesn’t bother,” said Mbele.
To try and get her character right,
Mbele did some method acting.
“I went to Norwood Police Station
because I know the detectives there.
“I asked them if I could hang out
because I needed to understand the pace.
Yes, there was downtime and all but
when it comes to serious work, then the
pace goes faster. We didn’t catch any
criminals,” she explained, giggling.
The look of her character was also
important to Mbele.
“When they approached me about
the look of the character, I made it very
obvious that I wanted a different look.
They had sent me pictures of Kerry
Washington but I declined that. I told
them that I would rather cut my hair and
so we settled for braids. Lydia doesn’t
have time for all the beauty things. She
doesn’t do nails,” she said.
“Right now, I am shooting another
movie where I play a character who is
from a squatter camp. So I have to
commit to that role. If you don’t then you
are defeating the purpose. So for Lydia, I
was willing to have the brush cut,” she
added.
Mbele summed up what you should
expect from The Alliance.
“The Alliance is about a cartel run by
the criminal character known as The
Governor. He got his name through how
he runs his crime syndicate. He runs the
streets of Soweto and downtown Joburg.
He is every cop’s dream bust and Lydia is
obsessed with catching him. At the end it
turns that the woman he married,
married him out of revenge. He killed
her family but he doesn’t recall that, so
she married him to get close and strike
back. So both the wife and Lydia join
forces to pull him down. Basically it’s
two women who bring down a Goliath,”
she said.
● The Alliance starts on April 27

MUNYA VOMO
NOT SO long ago, late last year, rapper Cassper
Nyovest and TV personality Boity Thulo made
headlines as a hot couple. As a matter of fact, the
pair may have coined the now popularly used word,
“baecation”, which loosely means a couple on
vacation. Then just weeks ago, Boity apparently
came out to say that she had broken up with
Cassper.
Given that most celebrities have these on-and-off
relationships, it was no surprise that they split up.
What is surprising is that the two agreed to go up
against each other in the first episode of Lip Sync
Battle Africa. Just like its American version, this
silly and yet addictive show is about celebrities
facing one another in a lip-syncing contest. They get
to act silly and dress up in costumes that all make
part of the act. The American version is hosted by
LL Cool J and and on African soil we have Pearl
Thusi and D Banj. The American version has had
the likes of Terry Crews vs Mike Tyson and
Channing Tatum against his wife but there was
never anything as controversial as the first African
episode. Yet when the two contestants of this local
show were approached for comment, they were
nonchalant about their personal relationship,
choosing to focus on what they plan to offer viewers.
“Lip Sync Battle Africa takes me completely out
of my element, but I’m genuinely having the time
of my life. Expect to see a side of me that you have
never seen before. I had no idea that the ability to
freely make a fool of yourself would be so much
fun! I’m really looking forward to seeing the show
myself. All I know is that I had a fantastic time and I
would love the opportunity to come back and do it
all over again,” said Boity.
The TV presenter and sometime-actress has
never shown her musical side, if she even had one.
But that doesn’t matter because all you need for Lip
Sync Battle Africa is some stage presence and an
idea of the lyrics.
So Cassper might not neccesarily have the
advantage here, just because he is a musician. Boity
has a good chance of winning if she puts her acting
to use.
Then again Cassper has been developing some
serious stage presence of late which has shown just
how conceptual he can get. Be it at his famous Fill
Up The Dome show or the recent Nicki Minaj tour,
Cassper has come up with some decent dance
moves, some of which will definitely be shown at
the show.
“I plan on having a lot of fun on Lip Sync Battle
Africa. Fans can expect to see me being less serious
than normal, and just truly and honestly having fun
– while still delivering a good show,” he said.
● The first episode of Lip Sync Battle Africa
will air on MTV (DStv channel 130) on April 14
at 8.50pm and on April 16 at 8.50pm. You can
also catch it on e.tv on April 23 at 6.30pm.
