                              Multimedia Assignment

Upon hearing this assignment at the beginning of the semester, I will admit

that I dreaded it a bit. It seemed like most of the other projects I have been given

throughout my college career; pointless and a waste of time. I was pleasantly

surprised when I reviewed the website for the assignment. I found it to be so

entertaining and relevant to my interests that I stayed on the site for quite a while

looking through their creative ideas.

What is interesting to point out is that when reading our various texts this

semester, I automatically tried to relate what I was reading to a specific pop

culture reference. The generation that I live in is so media oriented that we often

know what is happening with celebrities as soon as it happened. With social

networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter, it is becoming increasingly

common for young adults to find out all of their information solely from these

sites. For example, Twitter has several news programming members (even one

devoted exclusively to Breaking News) that I follow. I find myself quite

frequently filling my mom in on what is going on both nationally and domestically

as she is waiting for her 7 o’clock news to come on.

Many argue that this is unfortunate and not an adequate form of technology

to receive your news through. I must argue that point; in my opinion I think social

networking sites, Twitter especially, have given people my age the opportunity to

find out what news is happening when they would otherwise not bother to check. I

myself have never turned on a local news channel to catch up on a road that is

closed or a school that is starting a new diet plan. It does not interest me, and if it

was not for Twitter I doubt I would know what is going on throughout the world. I

am by no means saying that the world has to cater to my generation and only give

us news through this type of technology; I simply think it is more beneficial than

detrimental.

It is fascinating to see how relatable today’s entertainment news is to the

works of famous and notable authors of the past. Like I said before, when reading

the texts I was automatically thinking of how similar it was to, for example a Kim

Kardashian divorce scandal (shocker) or a Charlie Sheen rehab stint. This teaches

us that while we read these novels, poems, and articles that we think are pointless;

they can actually be tied into many of the things we are dealing with in our lives

today. Many believe that the writers of the past are irrelevant and not relatable, but

I constantly find myself reading a passage that could be helpful to something I am

going through. The entertainment business is more in the open and popular than

ever, and tying in what people our age are comfortable discussing with important

quotations is immensely helpful and creative.
