MSR Cookbook

The Mining Software Repositories (MSR) research community has grown significantly since the first MSR workshop was held in 2004. As the community continues to broaden its scope and deepens its expertise, it is worthwhile to reflect on the best practices that our community has developed over the past decade of research. We identify these best practices by surveying past MSR conferences and workshops. To that end, we review all 117 full papers published in the MSR proceedings between 2004 and 2012. We extract 268 comments from these papers, and categorize them using a grounded theory methodology. From this evaluation, four high-level themes were identified: data acquisition and preparation, synthesis, analysis, and sharing/replication. Within each theme we identify several common recommendations, and also examine how these recommendations have evolved over the past decade. In an effort to make this survey a living artifact, we also provide a public forum that contains the extracted recommendations in the hopes that the MSR community can engage in a continuing discussion on our evolving best practices.

Assisting Code Search with Automatic Query Reformulation for Bug Localization

Linux Variability Anomalies: What Causes Them and How do They get Fixed?
The document discusses variability anomalies in the Linux kernel caused by inconsistencies between code, Kconfig files, and Makefiles. The researchers conducted two studies to understand the causes and fixes of such anomalies. They found that incomplete Kconfig patches often cause referential anomalies, accounting for an average of 14% of cases. A Collaborative Document Ranking Model for a Multi-Faceted Search
This slides presents a novel collaborative document ranking model which aims at solving a complex information retrieval task involving a multi-faceted information need. For this purpose, we consider a group of users, viewed as experts, who collaborate by addressing the different query facets. We propose a two-step algorithm based on a relevance feedback process which first performs a document scoring towards each expert and then allocates documents to the most suitable experts using the Expectation-Maximisation learning-method. The performance improvement is demonstrated through experiments using TREC interactive benchmark.

Preface
This book is based on various experiences in research with student, practitioner and teacher in the Rudolph Kwanue University across the World. The difficulties they faced in understanding research as students, the discoveries about what was applicable and inapplicable in the field as practitioner, and development of the ability to effectively communicate difficult concepts in simple language without avoiding technicality and accuracy have become the basis of this book.
Research methodology is taught as a supporting subject in several ways in many academic disciplines such as health, education, psychology, social work, nursing, public health, library studies, Business and marketing research. The core philosophical base for this book comes from the conviction that, although these disciplines vary in content, their broad approach to a research enquiry is similar. This book, therefore, is addressed to these academic disciplines.
It is true that some disciplines place greater emphasis on quantitative research and some on qualitative research. This Bookโs approach to research is a combination of both. Firstly, it is the objective that should decide whether a study be carried out adopting a qualitative or a quantitative approach. Secondly, in real life most research is a combination of both methods.
Though they differ in the philosophy that underpins their mode of enquiry, to a great extent their broad approach to enquiry is similar. The quantitative research process is reasonably well structured whereas the qualitative one is fairly unstructured, and these are their respective strengths as well as weaknesses. This Book strongly believed that both are important to portray a complete picture. In addition, there are aspects of quantitative research that are qualitative in nature. It depends upon how a piece of information has been collected and analyzed.

Research methodology is taught as a supporting subject in several ways in many academic disciplines such as health, education, psychology, social work, nursing, public health, library studies, Business and marketing research. The core philosophical base for this book comes from the conviction that, although these disciplines vary in content, their broad approach to a research enquiry is similar. This book, therefore, is addressed to these academic disciplines.
It is true that some disciplines place greater emphasis on quantitative research and some on qualitative research. This Bookโs approach to research is a combination of both. Firstly, it is the objective that should decide whether a study be carried out adopting a qualitative or a quantitative approach. Secondly, in real life most research is a combination of both methods.
Though they differ in the philosophy that underpins their mode of enquiry, to a great extent their broad approach to enquiry is similar. The quantitative research process is reasonably well structured whereas the qualitative one is fairly unstructured, and these are their respective strengths as well as weaknesses. This Book strongly believed that both are important to portray a complete picture. In addition, there are aspects of quantitative research that are qualitative in nature. It depends upon how a piece of information has been collected and analyzed.
