This document summarizes a presentation about a shared print retention project in Maine called the Maine Shared Collection Strategy (MSCS). The project aims to identify materials held by partner libraries that can be retained for long-term access, reducing duplication. Partners extracted data on over 2.7 million circulating titles. These were analyzed based on circulation rates, holdings in other libraries, and relevance to Maine. Titles with low circulation or holdings were divided into those that libraries committed to retain long-term, and those needing further examination. The analysis supported the first phase of identifying materials for shared retention.

Linking Folksonomies to Knowledge Organization SystemsJakob .
This document discusses linking folksonomies, which are user-generated tagging systems, to formal knowledge organization systems (KOS). It describes harvesting tags from Wikipedia and Stack Exchange to generate SKOS/RDF representations. These folksonomies are then enriched by linking tags to concepts in controlled vocabularies. The results include hierarchical links between tags, mappings to other KOS, and using these links to provide related documents and analyze document collections.
SKOS and Its Application in Transferring Traditional Thesauri into Networked KOSMarcia Zeng
This document discusses applying SKOS (Simple Knowledge Organization System) to transfer the Chinese Classified Thesaurus (CCT), a traditional thesaurus, into a networked knowledge organization system. It reviews SKOS and examines challenges in applying it to CCT, including representing classification systems, alternative notations, and concepts from mapped vocabularies. It suggests treating CCT as a new vocabulary with each entry as an independent concept described using SKOS properties. Future directions include making vocabularies machine-processable and sharing them through web services.

Managing textual data semantically in relational databases by wael yahfooz an...SK Ahammad Fahad
the massive volume of data in databases, web pages, and document files usually causes information to be disorganized and unclear for the user. Therefore, information in such an environment can be classified into three forms: structured, semistructured, or unstructured. Structured information is the best form of information because it facilitates the acquisition and comprehension of knowledge. Relational Database Management System (RDBMS) has a robust structure that manages, organizes and retrieves data. There are many attempts have been made in order to deal with such data. These attempts can be categorized into three groups: within a database schema, by a developed data model within the database, or by query-based techniques in database. Nonetheless, RDBMS contain massive amount of unstructured data such as textual data.. This paper proposed Textual Virtual Schema Model (TVSM). TVSM is conducted to perform semantic textual data linking and clustering and is embedded in the relational database structure (schema). In addition, linking and converting the unstructured information to structured data. Quality improvement of textual data clusters. Achievemento f high query processing efficiencyi n retrieving data clusters. TVSM initially developed to assist researchers, developers, and database administrators who are concerned on unstructured information management, information extraction, multi-document clustering, information retrieval, query processing efficiency, personal information management, question answering, information integration, news tracking, and news summarization.
1. The document discusses recommendations for data.ac.uk, a proposed central hub for open academic data in the UK.

The document outlines criteria for organizational framework, object management, and infrastructure/security that repositories should address.
IRJET- A Novel Approach of Balancing Routing using Hop Selection using Cluste...IRJET Journal
This document presents a novel approach for balancing routing and extending network lifetime in wireless sensor networks using fuzzy logic-based clustering. It proposes using Type-2 fuzzy logic to select cluster heads based on three parameters: remaining battery power, node density, and distance to the base station. Simulations show that this Type-2 fuzzy logic approach achieves better energy efficiency and longer network lifetime compared to other routing algorithms like LEACH and its variants. The key contribution is applying Type-2 fuzzy logic, which handles uncertainties better than Type-1 fuzzy logic, to distribute energy load more evenly among sensor nodes through adaptive cluster head selection.
Vinod Chachra discussed improving discovery systems through post-processing harvested data. He outlined key players like data providers, service providers, and users. The harvesting, enrichment, and indexing processes were described. Facets, knowledge bases, and branding were discussed as ways to enhance discovery. Chachra concluded that progress has been made but more work is needed, and data and service providers should collaborate on standards.
The document provides an overview and status report of the ESDIS Project as of November 29, 2006. It discusses plans to evolve EOSDIS systems to improve access, processing, costs, and sustainability. The top three cost drivers - EMD/ECS, GES DAAC, and LaRC DAAC - contribute around 50% of the budget. Factors influencing these costs include operating multiple systems and providing unique science support. Approval was given to transition systems like GES DAAC and ASDC DAAC away from ECS and towards other processing. Metrics on archive growth, distribution, and users are also presented.
The document discusses using SKOS (Simple Knowledge Organization System) vocabularies to improve web search through term expansion. It provides an overview of SKOS and examples of how SKOS concepts and relationships can be used to expand query terms. The authors describe their implementation of SKOS-based term expansion in the Lucene search engine and evaluate its effectiveness on two datasets compared to baselines. Their results show that SKOS expansion improves precision and nDCG, particularly at early ranks, for queries over biomedical and library metadata.

Shared print Collections in North America: Going Main Stream and Picking Up S...Maine_SharedCollections
This document summarizes the growing activity and infrastructure supporting shared print collections in North America. It discusses how shared print programs have grown from a few pilot programs over a decade ago to include dozens of consortia with over 400 libraries holding about 20,000 journal titles and 5 million monographs collectively. Key shared print programs and their holdings are described. The document also outlines the analysis, registry, community, and consulting support that is building the necessary infrastructure for shared print. It concludes by arguing we are just at the beginning of large-scale shared print collections that will reclaim space while preserving print for the long-term.
The document discusses the transition from print to e-text and the challenges libraries face in developing shared print and digital collections. It notes the transition is uneven, inevitable, and controversial. Shared print collections require determining the right number of copies needed, legal issues around digitized books, and business models for licensing electronic texts. The document also examines which types of materials are best suited for electronic formats and print, and the work still needed to support electronic texts in shared collections, such as improving reading devices and establishing demand models.
This document contains data on the circulation statistics of various library collections. It shows the average circulation across all titles was 2.08. Colgate has the most titles circulated over 10,000, while Vassar appears to have more titles with heavy circulation above 10. The document considers whether any title holdings from the subsets analyzed should be withdrawn.
