How Race, Age and Gender Shape Attitudes Towards Mental Health
Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

✅What is C++ Programming?
C++ is an enhanced and extended version of C programming language, developed by Bjarne Stroustrup in 1979 as part of his Ph.D. project. Bjarne developed what he called ‘C with Classes’ (later renamed C++) because he felt limited by the existing programming languages that were not ideal for large scale projects. He used C to build what he wanted because C was already a general-purpose language that was efficient and fast in its operations.

✅What is C++ Programming?
C++ is an enhanced and extended version of C programming language, developed by Bjarne Stroustrup in 1979 as part of his Ph.D. project. Bjarne developed what he called ‘C with Classes’ (later renamed C++) because he felt limited by the existing programming languages that were not ideal for large scale projects. He used C to build what he wanted because C was already a general-purpose language that was efficient and fast in its operations.

- 2. MQ以前 • プログラム同士は相互に通信していた • いちいち応答を待たないといけない • メッセージはきちんと届いた？保証さ れている？ • 文字コード変換は？文字化けしてな い？ • セキュリティは？ • 接続するシステムが増えるほどコスト が増える
- 3. そこでMQですよ • プログラムはキューにメッセージを PUTしたらあとはお任せ • 処理をする側がGETして処理する • プログラムはキューのみを意識すれ ば良い • 適切なホストへのメッセージ送信は MQが行う MQ
- 4. といっても • MQの中は結構入り組んでいたりする • システム相互接続を隠蔽しているのでその複雑さがMQの中に移動 • 環境ごとにGET・PUTするキューを作る（プログラムが意識するのはあくまでも目の 前のキューのみ） • キューを転送用の設定をする、キュー同士をチャネルで結ぶ • そういうわけである程度のネットワークの知識もあったほうがスムーズ • IPアドレスとポートくらい分かってればいいかな・・・というレベル • この辺りはMQSIという製品がソリューションとして存在していた • 送達保証はスティッキーメッセージというメッセージを利用するが重たい
- 5. スティッキーメッセージ • こんな処理 • 送信元は送信先にメッセージを転送（送信元には保管される） • 送信先がメッセージをGETする • 送信先キューは送信元キューに「メッセージがGETされた」ことを通知する • 送信元キューから該当するメッセージを削除する • ネットワーク的に複数回の往復が発生する
- 6. MQの使用例 • バッチ処理の開始メッセージをキューにPUT、ジョブネットがメッセージをGET したらバッチ処理を開始する • オープン系システムがひたすらメッセージをキューにPUTしていき、ある程度蓄 積されたらメインフレームでバッチ処理を行う • メッセージは基本テキストだが、バイナリデータを送っても良い • ファイル転送を行うこともアプリ次第では可能 • 最近だとチャットなんかにもMQは利用されているらしい（AWSのSQS）
- 7. 使うべきでない箇所 • リアルタイム処理が必要になるケース • 処理の結果を送信元が受け取って後続処理をするような場合は少々複雑になりやすい • できないわけではない • 「この処理やってる間にこっちではあの処理やろう」という場合は真っ当 • 単なるプロセス間通信として使うのであれば却って使いにくい • JavaならSession Bean（EJB）を使うほうが良い • いっそすべて非同期にするというデザインは何気にあり • オペレータが処理要求を送信したらすぐに次の処理ができる • 「後で確認する」という運用が発生するのでそこは要検討
- 8. デザイン • あくまでも「メッセージが送信されたら完 結する」という粒度を考える • 実行したいコマンドとそのパラメータなど • 複数のメッセージに分割して送信する、と いうやり方は修羅の道を歩む羽目になる • 受け取り側でメッセージを組み立て直す などするので • DBに必要なデータを保存したら、先方 にコマンド実行のコマンドメッセージを 送る、などが良さそう • 送ったメッセージの結果を同一プログラ ムで応答待ちするのは筋が悪い（せめて 別スレッドで） 送信 PGM 受信 PGM サー バーサ イド MQ DB
- 9. JAVAとMQ • Java APIで当初提供 • 二つ目くらいのバージョンからコネクションプーリングをサポート（IBMの場合） • コネクションのコストがかなり高かったので、これによって１０倍くらい早くなった • JMSで標準化 • Java Messaging Service • JavaEEの標準ライブラリでインターフェースを統一 • なんだかんだでベンダースペシフィックな部分が利用可能だったりした • モダンなJavaEEではどの程度隠蔽されたかはすいません知らないです
- 10. JAVAとMQ その2 • Message Driven Bean • JMS+Event Driven+EJB • 所定のキューにメッセージがPUTされたらJavaEEサーバーがGETしてEJBをイベントドリブ ンに呼び出す • これがなかった頃は、EJBでJMSを使用してキューにメッセージがPUTされるのをひたすら 待つ、ということをしていた • 使い方としては微妙 • これのおかげで結構EJBも使いやすくなった気がする • トランザクションはコンテナマネージドになった気がする • つまり、マニュアルにbeginやcommitを呼ぶことができないので、rollbackをきちんと意識する
- 11. SOAとMQ • サービス指向アーキテクチャになると、MQはインフラとして活用される • もともとインフラといえばインフラだけど、SOAによってかなり隠蔽される • SOAによってプロトコルが統一されたので、EJBだろうとDBだろうと全部繋がる • ただ仕様がめちゃくちゃ重たい • Hello Worldしたらその１０倍くらいのXMLが付いてくる • 様々な技術の相互接続性を確保するためなので、最小公倍数がでかいのではと推察
- 12. トランザクションとMQ • 2PCをサポート • MQとDBをUOW（Unit Of Work）として処理できる • MQからメッセージをGET、ビジネスロジックを実行（DB更新含む）、結果をMQにPUTと いうのを一つのトランザクションとしてbegin~commit/rollbackで囲って良い • XAインターフェースを実装している必要がある • トランザクションのスコープに参加するためにミドルウェアが実装するインターフェース • 2PCは、ようはトランザクションに参加するすべてのリソースに「コミットするよ？」と 聞いて、全部が「コミットしていいよ！」と応答したら改めてすべてコミットさせる方式 • 2PCが実務上必要なシチュエーションは少ないかもしれないけど金融系では普通に利用さ れています
- 13. MQあるある • 高橋の高問題 • 文字コードのマッピングに不備があり、一部環境では高橋が髙橋に変換される • 同じように渡辺が確か渡邊になる問題もあった • 文字コードがSJISやEUCといったものが乱立していたために起きた出来事
