MPs defend title with new squad
Story and photo by Walt Johnson
                   Mountaineer staff

“Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown.” This old
Shakespeare saying may be all too real for the 759th Military
Police Battalion as it defends its post softball title this season.
Every team is eager to prove it is as good as the champions.
It might be fairer to call the police unit the defending
champion, rather than reigning champions, since only two
players return from last year’s squad.
One of the players is team captain Milton Santiago,
who has the unenviable task of deciding how this
team will go about defending the title. Christopher Davis
is the other returning player.
Santiago said the team will not use the roster turnover
as an excuse or a crutch as it begins defense of its title.
“We are now figuring out what we have to do to be in a
position to win a championship this year,” he said. “Most of
these guys are playing for the opportunity to win their first
championship and I think that’s a little more difficult than
what we had to do (last year). This team has a little more
weight on its shoulders because (the players) want to do
what we did last year.
“We have started out the year playing very good softball. It’s
early in the season, but I honestly believe we may have more
talent this year than we had last year. For that reason, I hope that
we will see a second championship this year,” said Santiago.
He said last year’s team was all about hitting and this
year is about a total team concept. This year’s team has
the talent to depend on all phases of the game and not
count on individual “brilliance” to achieve success, Santiago
said. The team is working on the three concepts: playing
good offense, good defense and being good teammates.
“We also know that every team has its individual quirks
and we are learning to understand what this team can and
cannot do as we play the season. We have a lot of raw talent
and (what) we want to do is make sure that we keep the
drive and dedication that we have right now,” Santiago said.
He said the police team has a lot of young talent who
give their all for each game and every team member will
get an opportunity to excel. Santiago said one of the best
things about this team is it has an attitude that “what is
best for the team is what is best for me.”
“Our biggest challenge this year is going to be having
more players that can play than I have the time to play them.
I have to figure out a way to keep everybody fresh and ready
to go. There are a lot of great players and great teams out
there and there is no way I would say we are the 100 percent
best team on post. But I will say this, if anyone wants to
take the title away from us they’re going to have to fight Christopher Davis talks to his 759th Military Police Battalion team prior to a game at the Mountain Post
very hard in order to get it,” Santiago said. Sports Complex, stressing that this is a new year and a new challenge for his teammates.

Outside the classroom, the future Soldiers put that knowledge to the test learning to work together as a team and build their physical prowess. Soldiers assigned to 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, assisted Fountain-Fort Carson High School JROTC cadets by grading and supervising a “Raider Challenge” at the high school sports fields, May 5. Fifteen teams of cadets, representing schools from Colorado Springs, Denver, Pueblo and Loveland, partic- ipated in the competition, testing their physical strength and mental toughness. “These kids received training on the common core tasks that we as Soldiers do on a daily basis,” said Sgt. 1st Class Bryan Smith, platoon sergeant, Company C, 1st Bn., 22nd Inf. Reg. The event proved to be a great experience for both the Soldiers and students, he said. “The ‘Regulars’ have a partnership with FFCHS, so when they told us about this event, we had Soldiers eager to volunteer,” said Smith. “This was an opportunity to give Sgt. May 25, 2012— MOUNTAINEER 31 MPs defend title with new squad Story and photo by Walt Johnson Mountaineer staff “Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown.” This old Shakespeare saying may be all too real for the 759th Military Police Battalion as it defends its post softball title this season. Every team is eager to prove it is as good as the champions. It might be fairer to call the police unit the defending champion, rather than reigning champions, since only two players return from last year’s squad. One of the players is team captain Milton Santiago, who has the unenviable task of deciding how this team will go about defending the title. Christopher Davis is the other returning player. Santiago said the team will not use the roster turnover as an excuse or a crutch as it begins defense of its title. “We are now figuring out what we have to do to be in a position to win a championship this year,” he said. “Most of these guys are playing for the opportunity to win their first championship and I think that’s a little more difficult than what we had to do (last year). This team has a little more weight on its shoulders because (the players) want to do what we did last year. “We have started out the year playing very good softball. It’s early in the season, but I honestly believe we may have more talent this year than we had last year. For that reason, I hope that we will see a second championship this year,” said Santiago. He said last year’s team was all about hitting and this year is about a total team concept. This year’s team has the talent to depend on all phases of the game and not count on individual “brilliance” to achieve success, Santiago said. The team is working on the three concepts: playing good offense, good defense and being good teammates. “We also know that every team has its individual quirks and we are learning to understand what this team can and cannot do as we play the season. We have a lot of raw talent and (what) we want to do is make sure that we keep the drive and dedication that we have right now,” Santiago said. He said the police team has a lot of young talent who give their all for each game and every team member will get an opportunity to excel. Santiago said one of the best things about this team is it has an attitude that “what is best for the team is what is best for me.” “Our biggest challenge this year is going to be having more players that can play than I have the time to play them. I have to figure out a way to keep everybody fresh and ready to go. There are a lot of great players and great teams out there and there is no way I would say we are the 100 percent best team on post. But I will say this, if anyone wants to take the title away from us they’re going to have to fight Christopher Davis talks to his 759th Military Police Battalion team prior to a game at the Mountain Post very hard in order to get it,” Santiago said. 34 MOUNTAINEER —May 25, 2012 Mountaineer Athlete of the Week Adam Frame Intramural softball player Adam Frame played most major sports as a child and continued playing sports after being assigned to Fort Carson three years ago and even while serving the nation during a tour in Iraq. What is your favorite professional sports moment? (It was) in April when the Washington Redskins drafted Robert Griffin III to play quarterback. The Redskins definitely need a quarterback and he is definitely going to be a good player. What is your favorite personal sports moment? It’s always great to get that game-winning hit or make that amazing play, but playing with my unit is my favorite sports moment. I love the camaraderie we have here. It’s a lot different than any team I have played on because of the other aspects we (share) since we work together. What is the one thing in sports you haven’t done yet that you would still like to do? I would like to play Division I football. I played Division III and I was pretty good, but I would’ve loved to gone to Virginia Tech and play football. If you could meet any athlete who would it be? Michael Vick because he played ball at Virginia Tech, got drafted No. 1 overall and then had the unfortunate event of the dogfighting (incident). He has been able to come back after spending two years in jail and still plays very well. People who don’t know me would be surprised to know that … I am an all-purpose sports player. I’m a bigger guy and there are people that don’t know that I can hang, no matter what sport it is. I can play any sport well because I do it for the love of the game.
