Motivation is defined as the processes that account for an individual's intensity, direction, and persistence of efforts towards attaining a goal. It has three key elements: intensity, direction, and persistence. Motivation includes various terms like motives, needs, wants, drives, and wishes that activate needs and provide need satisfaction through engaging in work behavior. Motivation is a psychological phenomenon based on motives that is accepted by individuals and oriented toward goals in a dynamic and situational process. Theories of motivation include McClelland's needs theory of need for power, affiliation, and achievement, and Alderfer's ERG theory of existence, relatedness, and growth needs.
