This study examined whether social interaction and competition on social media could improve physical activity levels among nurses at work. 10 nurses used pedometers and a Facebook app called Stepmatron to track and share their daily step counts over 21 days. Stepmatron allowed users to see their own step count and their friends' counts. Participants took significantly more steps when able to see their friends' activity, suggesting social interaction online can motivate increased physical activity.

Most companies aren’t going deep enough with their user data.
Conversion funnels, retention, and segmenting by install cohort help you identify where your users are getting stuck or leaving, but aren’t very helpful in telling you what you should do instead.
In this session from Opticon 2015, Spenser Skates, CEO and Co-founder of Amplitude, discusses how you can use behavior-based cohorting to maximize user engagement and retention. By grouping your users based on what actions they take, you'll discover how you can improve your product to drive growth.
As with Facebook’s famous ‘7 friends in 10 days’, learn how you can find the ‘magic moment’ to focus your product around.

The document provided will describe our research group’s findings pertaining to our usability test of
a newly created iteration of the IAKM public facing web site. The testing completed was performed
utilizing the ClearView eye tracking software to accurately monitor the user’s interaction on multiple
dimensions. The facility allowed us to work directly with the user, and monitor interaction via click
tracking, eye movement, audio and video. Combining those attributes, based on a time scale, our
research team was able to more accurately identify where the site changes were successful and where
they were not.
Usability engineering of games a comparative analysis of measuring excitement...ijujournal
Usability engineering and usability testing are concepts that continue to evolve. Interesting research studies and new ideas come up every now and then. This paper tests the hypothesis of using an EDA-based physiological measurements as a usability testing tool by considering three measures; which are observers‟ opinions, self-reported data and EDA-based physiological sensor data. These data were analyzed comparatively and statistically. It concludes by discussing the findings that has been obtained from those subjective and objective measures, which partially supports the hypothesis.

It is essential for a business organization to get the customer feedback in order to grow as a company. Business organizations are collecting customer feedback using various methods. But the question is ‘are they efficient and effective?’ In the current context, there is more of a customer oriented market and all the business organizations are competing to achieve customer delight through their products and services. Social Media plays a huge role in one’s life. Customers tend to reveal their true opinion about certain brands on social media rather than giving routine feedback to the producers or sellers. Because of this reason, it is identified that social media can be used as a tool to analyze customer behavior. If relevant data can be gathered from the customers’ social media feeds and if these data are analyzed properly, a clear idea to the companies what customers really think about their brand can be provided.

The aim of this study was to understand the factors associated with continued use of a behaviour change health app. We looked at the effect of age, gender, motivation, perceived self-efficacy, and expected use - documentary ('how much water do I drink?'), diagnostic ('has my water drinking an effect on fatigue?'), behaviour change oriented ('I want to drink more water'), reward-oriented (comparison to others, badges, etcetera), and 'fetishized' (interest in gadgets for their novelty value) - and feedback properties - feedback valence, cooperative feedback, and competitive feedback - on app retention rates. Due to the number of users who abandoned the app, we lacked the statistical power to gauge the impact of the app on behaviour change.

Poster presentation for Digital Engagement 2011 conference #de2011, part of the Electromagnates project: www.electro-magnates.com investigating energy interventions for the workplace. Research done by the Lincoln Social Computing Research Centre lisc.lincoln.ac.uk
Mental and Emotional health difficulties are a leading cause of disability worldwide. Interestingly, studies have consistently shown that interpersonal relationships and social support can play a vital role in emotional health and wellbeing. Technologies that effectively support emotional wellbeing are likely to offer significant benefits, both for individuals and for society as a whole. This talk will discuss the potential of social media such as social networking sites, online games and mobile phone applications to provide social support for the emotional wellbeing of users, as well as the design constraints inherent in doing so. The EPSRC-funded project called "Exploring social Networks to Augment Cognitive behaviour Therapy (ENACT)," which is being lead by the Lincoln Social Computing research centre, will be discussed as an example of work in this field.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

The goal was to improve the amount of activity undertaken at work. We used pedometers to measure activity. A pedometer will always be a pedometer. It will always be something you wear to record a step count. Adding tonnes of bells and whistles to it will be of little advantage if we don’t know how to use them to motivate behaviour change. Persuasive technology: Behaviour change is a psychological problem. Must be done with knowledge of the psych lit. Behaviour change brought about through how people use the technology – not the technology itself.
Bad thing Conversely, exercise helps Considering so much time is spent at work, it may prove advantageous to build exercise into this time rather than social time. So, rather than encouraging people to go for walks, might be easier to encourage them to take the stairs.
Chan et al ran a study where there were two groups – one which involved health education (control group), and the other personal/team goal setting (intervention group). Analysis of the study‟s activity data revealed that 51% of participants in the intervention group met the US governments recommendations compared to 31% in the control group.
A - participants could see their friends‟ step data as well as their own B - participants could only see their own personal step activity.
So, it seems the social properties were most attended-to.
