This document summarizes a research project on hand gesture recognition. The researchers built a system using a webcam and OpenCV that could detect the number of fingers shown in a bare hand. When fingers were detected, a signal would be sent to an Arduino board to display the count on an LED screen. The researchers used various algorithms for tasks like background subtraction, edge detection, and finger counting. While the prototype worked well, it had some limitations from factors like varying illumination that need further improvement to make the system robust and suitable for real-world use, such as in assistive technologies for sign language.
