Anna May Jarvis was the founder of Mother's Day in the United States. She created the holiday in 1908 in honor of her mother, and campaigned for its nationwide recognition. However, Jarvis later regretted the commercialization of the holiday, and spent her fortune fighting florists and card companies that profited from Mother's Day. By the end of her life, Jarvis had passed away in a sanitarium, penniless and blind, having never experienced the holiday herself as she never married or had children.
