The Civil War occurred from 1861 to 1865 and resulted in over 900,000 soldier deaths, making it one of the bloodiest battles in American history. The war began due to a dispute between northern and southern states over the issue of slavery, with northern states wanting to abolish it while southern states wanted to keep slaves. Abraham Lincoln unsuccessfully tried to resolve tensions with a peace treaty before the war began.

Thirteenth Amendment states

The Fifteenth Amendment states that “The right of citizens of the United States to vote
shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race,
color, or previous condition of servitude.” To summarize a citizen cannot be turned down
voting privileges due to race, color, or being a past slave. This allowed African American’s
the right to vote, making America closer to be a more equal country.
