“Uv Erdene”Theater for Living human treasures
to promote intangible cultural heritages of Mongolia
A new partnership be-
tween Arts Council of Mon-
golia and Rio Tinto opened
Mongolia’s first heritage the-
atre dedicated to preserving
and promoting the country’s
unique and treasured intan-
gible cultural heritage.
The new multi-functional
“Uv Erdene” theater which has
a seating capacity of 100, and
is located within the National
Cultural Heritage Centre,
opened to the public on 05 July
2022. The theatre provided
a permanent venue to host a
wide range of events that will
showcase the intangible cul-
tural heritage and help docu-
ment Mongolian intellectual
and cultural values.
An effective way to safe-
guard Intangible Cultural
Heritage sustainably is to en-
sure that the bearers of that
heritage continue to transmit
their knowledge and skills
to younger generations. Out
of 10,849 heritage practitio-
ners registered in Mongolia,
71% are traditional folk art
performers and 26% are tra-
ditional craftsmen, who will
be the main users of the new
cultural heritage theater “Uv
Erdene”.
Uv Erdene Theater differs
from the professional theater
ensembles and art schools in
that it will regularly present
“A Living human treasure”
heritage bearers’performances
to transmit their knowledge
and skills.
The lack of substantial
funding for safeguarding cul-
tural heritage reminds the es-
sential role of Public-Private
Partnerships in implementing
nationwide cultural heritage
preservation projects.
Rio Tinto, one of the
world’s leading mining com-
panies and Mongolia’s largest
international investor, is com-
mitted to helping preserve and
promote cultural heritage and
partnering with relevant arts
and cultural organizations.
As part of this longstanding
commitment, which included
support for cultural Naadam,
Rio Tinto Mongolia LLC has
provided MNT400 million
funding for the Uv Erdene
Theater at the National Cul-
tural Heritage Center ensuring
the completion of essential
works such as interior con-
struction, stage setup, lighting,
audio and video equipment of
the cultural heritage theater.
Also, Rio Tinto supports Cul-
tural Naadam which promotes
Mongolia’s Nomadic culture
and traditions to domestic and
international audiences and en-
hances the scope & quality of
arts & culture services during
the national Naadam festival.
As a result of this valu-
able contribution to heritage
preservation, Mongolian heri-
tage practitioners now have a
platform for intangible cultural
heritage and folk art show-
cases, master classes, and
promotional documentary film
screenings. Uv Erdene theater
will annually serve 2000 heri-
tage practitioners involving
more than 10,000 children and
youth and 40 non-government
organizations.
