In recent years, several strategies such as fuel treatment, engine modification, EGR and catalytic converter have been introduced to control emissions from vehicles. Catalytic converter equipment is efficient and commonly used. Catalytic converters reduce emissions of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides and particulate matter from internal combustion engines and allow more strict pollution standards to be met. In this study paper different methods and strategies to increase efficiency of catalytic converter is discussed. The efficiency of the catalytic converter is updated according to literature survey improvements in design, shape and content. The hexagonal monolith shape was found to have better mechanical efficiency than the square shape. Catalytic converters based on nickel have cut HC by 40 percent and CO by 35 percent. A major part of the air pollution caused is due to the vehicular emission which is increasing at an alarming rate. The different types of vehicles like car, bus, truck etc. contribute a way as well as play a dominant duty in increasing air pollution. These vehicles find its running source mainly form the extracts of fossil fuels like petrol, diesel. The fuels undergo combustion to generate energy so as to support the vehicle for duty. The incomplete combustion of the fuels in the engine paves a way for production of products like the carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and particulate matters. A high emission level is therefore a proved result. For the purpose of forcing the fuel to have efficient combustion and for reduction of the emission levels for reducing air pollution a wide range of processes are applicable. These include improvising engine design, fuel pre-treatment etc. Among these wide ranges of options available catalytic converter is found to be a better way for establishing an efficient combustion in the controller engine of the vehicle. Usage of noble group metal is an effective way for effective combustion like the platinum group metal serves way good for reducing the exhausts. With the help of secondary measures efficiency of the engine is improved as well. The techniques are still under development as because there are some limitations of the catalytic converters which are needed to be dealt with but the application of this technique has better achievement points as well.

Increased awareness regarding the adverse effects of pollutants from automobile exhaust gases has been the main driving force for implementation of more and more stringent legislation on automobile exhaust emissions in many Countries. On Board Diagnostic (OBD), regulations in the USA for light and medium duty vehicles (I. C. Engines) are introducing to implement the air quality standard. California and the Federal Government used a driving cycle to certify 1966 and newer models which referred to as either California Cycle or the Federal Test Procedure (FTP). The California Air Resource Board (CARB) and the objective to reduce hydrocarbon (HC) emission caused by malfunction of the vehicles emission control systems adopted the California code of Regulations (CCR) known as OBD – II. The diagnosis is based on the oxygen sensor response time that is the amount of time to complete a switch from rich to lean or lean to rich transition that gives the ability to control the engine at stochiometric Air Fuel ratio. Typical values of lean mean voltage and rich mean voltage are 300 to 600 mill volts respectively. For post-cat O2 sensor, in particular, voltage level checks and heater systems checked and done and the failure thresholds for the post O2 sensor, diagnostic must not be set at a point beyond the failure limit where the catalyst diagnostic is affected.

The experime ntal setup to test blended fuel is prepared with mu lti cylinder four stroke spark ignition engine. The res ults indicate that CO and HC exhaust emissions are lower with the use of Dimethyl carbonate gasoline blended fuels as compared to the use of unleaded gasoline. The effect of above additive on NOx is insignificant.

In the scenario of fast depletion of fossil fuels, increase of fuel prices in International Market causing economic burden on developing countries like India and increase of pollution levels with fossil fuel, the search for alternative fuels has become pertinent. Gaseous fuels have many advantages than liquid fuels, as the pollutants emitted by gaseous fuels are low and less dangerous when compared with liquid fuels. Specifically, CNG, provides an affordable energy source. Not only is CNG cheaper, it also gives consumers fuel efficiency. Besides, CNG becoming a vehicle owner’s best friend as it offers the potential of preserving the well-being of the vehicle, which translates into reduced up keeping cost. CNG is way better than petrol, as it emits less harmful gases such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxides into the air. Another big plus point about CNG is in abundant supply as it is widely available throughout the world. CNG was injected and ethanol was carbureted in diesel engine. Ethanol is highly volatile fuel and ratio of C/H (C=Number of carbon atoms, H=Number of hydrogen atoms in fuel composition) is less. However, ethanol has low cetane number. It causes combustion problems in diesel engine and hence call for semi adiabatic diesel engine (SADE), which can burn low calorific value fuel, give high heat release rate and faster rate of combustion. Air gap insulation was provided with piston and liner. Investigations were carried out with CNG as primary fuel inducted by port injection and ethanol was carbureted into the engine. Particulate matter (PM), oxides of nitrogen (NOx), carbon mono oxide (CO) levels and un-burnt hydro carbons (UBHC) are the exhaust emissions from a diesel engine. They cause health hazards, once they are inhaled in. They also cause environmental effects like Green-house effect and Global Warming. Hence control of these emissions is an immediate effect and an urgent step. The pollutants of PM, NOx, CO and UBHC were determined at different values of brake power of engine. Data was compared with diesel operation on conventional engine. The maximum induction of ethanol was 40% of total mass of diesel as full load operation, while it was 60% with SADE. Particulate emissions were determined by AVL Smoke meter, while other emissions were measured by Netel Chromatograph multi-gas analyzer at different values of brake power of the engine. These pollutants were drastically reduced with induction of CNG and carbureted ethanol and further reduced with SADE.

A major part of the air pollution caused is due to the vehicular emission which is increasing at an alarming rate. The different types of vehicles like car, bus, truck etc. contribute a way as well as play a dominant duty in increasing air pollution. These vehicles find its running source mainly form the extracts of fossil fuels like petrol, diesel. The fuels undergo combustion to generate energy so as to support the vehicle for duty. The incomplete combustion of the fuels in the engine paves a way for production of products like the carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and particulate matters. A high emission level is therefore a proved result. For the purpose of forcing the fuel to have efficient combustion and for reduction of the emission levels for reducing air pollution a wide range of processes are applicable. These include improvising engine design, fuel pre-treatment etc. Among these wide ranges of options available catalytic converter is found to be a better way for establishing an efficient combustion in the controller engine of the vehicle. Usage of noble group metal is an effective way for effective combustion like the platinum group metal serves way good for reducing the exhausts. With the help of secondary measures efficiency of the engine is improved as well. The techniques are still under development as because there are some limitations of the catalytic converters which are needed to be dealt with but the application of this technique has better achievement points as well.

Increased awareness regarding the adverse effects of pollutants from automobile exhaust gases has been the main driving force for implementation of more and more stringent legislation on automobile exhaust emissions in many Countries. On Board Diagnostic (OBD), regulations in the USA for light and medium duty vehicles (I. C. Engines) are introducing to implement the air quality standard. California and the Federal Government used a driving cycle to certify 1966 and newer models which referred to as either California Cycle or the Federal Test Procedure (FTP). The California Air Resource Board (CARB) and the objective to reduce hydrocarbon (HC) emission caused by malfunction of the vehicles emission control systems adopted the California code of Regulations (CCR) known as OBD – II. The diagnosis is based on the oxygen sensor response time that is the amount of time to complete a switch from rich to lean or lean to rich transition that gives the ability to control the engine at stochiometric Air Fuel ratio. Typical values of lean mean voltage and rich mean voltage are 300 to 600 mill volts respectively. For post-cat O2 sensor, in particular, voltage level checks and heater systems checked and done and the failure thresholds for the post O2 sensor, diagnostic must not be set at a point beyond the failure limit where the catalyst diagnostic is affected.

In view of the above,it is decide d to investigate the effect of adding Dimethyl Carb onate to unleaded gasoline on exhaust emission. The experime ntal setup to test blended fuel is prepared with mu lti cylinder four stroke spark ignition engine. The res ults indicate that CO and HC exhaust emissions are lower with the use of Dimethyl carbonate gasoline blended fuels as compared to the use of unleaded gasoline. The effect of above additive on NOx is insignificant.

In the scenario of fast depletion of fossil fuels, increase of fuel prices in International Market causing economic burden on developing countries like India and increase of pollution levels with fossil fuel, the search for alternative fuels has become pertinent. Gaseous fuels have many advantages than liquid fuels, as the pollutants emitted by gaseous fuels are low and less dangerous when compared with liquid fuels. Specifically, CNG, provides an affordable energy source. Not only is CNG cheaper, it also gives consumers fuel efficiency. Besides, CNG becoming a vehicle owner’s best friend as it offers the potential of preserving the well-being of the vehicle, which translates into reduced up keeping cost. CNG is way better than petrol, as it emits less harmful gases such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxides into the air. Another big plus point about CNG is in abundant supply as it is widely available throughout the world. CNG was injected and ethanol was carbureted in diesel engine. Ethanol is highly volatile fuel and ratio of C/H (C=Number of carbon atoms, H=Number of hydrogen atoms in fuel composition) is less. However, ethanol has low cetane number. It causes combustion problems in diesel engine and hence call for semi adiabatic diesel engine (SADE), which can burn low calorific value fuel, give high heat release rate and faster rate of combustion. Air gap insulation was provided with piston and liner. Investigations were carried out with CNG as primary fuel inducted by port injection and ethanol was carbureted into the engine. Particulate matter (PM), oxides of nitrogen (NOx), carbon mono oxide (CO) levels and un-burnt hydro carbons (UBHC) are the exhaust emissions from a diesel engine. They cause health hazards, once they are inhaled in. They also cause environmental effects like Green-house effect and Global Warming. Hence control of these emissions is an immediate effect and an urgent step. The pollutants of PM, NOx, CO and UBHC were determined at different values of brake power of engine. Data was compared with diesel operation on conventional engine. The maximum induction of ethanol was 40% of total mass of diesel as full load operation, while it was 60% with SADE. Particulate emissions were determined by AVL Smoke meter, while other emissions were measured by Netel Chromatograph multi-gas analyzer at different values of brake power of the engine. These pollutants were drastically reduced with induction of CNG and carbureted ethanol and further reduced with SADE.

Transportation is the largest source of various pollutants like CO and PM. The government has taken steps like switching buses and vehicles to CNG to reduce emissions.

Diesel engines exhausting gaseous emission and particulate matter have long been regarded as one of the major air pollution sources, particularly in metropolitan areas, and have been a source of serious public concern for a long time. There has been numerous research in the field of reduction of these pollutants since diesel engines came to major use. Major emissions from a diesel engine are NOx, SOx, CO and particulate matter (PM).amongst these pollutants CO and Sox and some quantity of particulate matters are reduced by some after treatment devices. Also NOx emissions are reduced by selective catalytic reduction, exhaust gas recirculation. In this work, the experiment was carried out on twin cylinder diesel engine fuelled with water emulsified diesel and fly ash as an additive. The test is carried out at constant speed and varying the load condition and investigate the performance and emission characteristics of the engine. Brake specific fuel consumption is increased by 3.33% and 5.43%. and NOX emission is reduced by 11.87% and 15% respectively, when addition of 5% and 10% water in diesel. Also with the addition of 3% and 6% fly-ash in 5% and 10% water diesel emulsion. Brake specific fuel consumption is increased by 6.27%, 7.91%, 5.79% and 8.21%, also Co emission was increases by 22.33%, 12.5%, 36.36% and 22.22% respectively when results comparing with diesel. The Brake thermal efficiency was increased by 4.39% when addition of 10% water in diesel and also with addition of 3% and 6% fly-ash in 10% water diesel emulsion there is 3.97% and 1.11%. Brake thermal efficiency increases as compare to diesel.

ABSTRACT In the near future the demand for diesel driven vehicles is projected to increase but a palladium-based diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) cannot be applied due to its intolerance to sulphur. In this study, we will develop catalyst formulations that may be utilised in the DOC system and an emphasis will be placed on the catalytic activity with respect to its sulphur tolerance for coexisting oxidation of CO and the unburnt hydrocarbons (HC).Growing alarms on health effect and pressure to fulfil the governmental directives for the reduction of pollutants emissions from diesel engines are paving the way for the development of tailored treatment systems. These cannot be accomplished by engine modifications, fuel pre- treatments or simply better tuning of the combustion process; thus a convenient way of treating diesel and off-gases is needed. Automobile manufacturers scrambled to find an effective solution to rising air pollution levels and respond to demands by both consumers and governments are likely to lower air pollution and smog caused by automobile emissions.Precious metals are extensively used in automobile catalytic converters for pollution control. Evidence from preliminary studies showed that catalysts supported by TiO2 or Al2O3 presented greater potential for this application. For CO oxidation, the highest initial activity was exhibited by the Pt-only catalysts followed by the Pd-Pt alloys, and lastly the Pd-only formulations. This report outlines background of DOC, together with its preparation and activity testing that will be conducted at Mintek AMD laboratories. Shifts of light-off curves to higher temperatures will be studied. CO and HC conversion graphs will also be plotted to check the activity of each catalyst. The catalysts will also be tested for deactivation.
