 Gun control is defined as the regulation of the sale and use
of rifles and handguns. Past and current statistics regarding
gun violence has prompted communities and states to look
at the impact of death and injuries due to guns. Over time,
data indicates for every person who dies from a gunshot
wound two other individuals are wounded. Communities
and states are looking seriously at how they can pass
stricter laws regarding mandatory gun safety classes before
purchase, more thorough background checks to prevent
those with a history of documented mental illness and
hospitalization in mental institutions, individuals with
history of felony convictions and incarcerations, and
lengthening the time for background checks when
purchasing a gun.

 In 2010, guns took the lives of 31,076 Americans in
homicides, suicides, and unintentional shootings.
This is equivalent to more than 85 deaths each day
and more than 3 deaths each hour.
 Firearms were the third-leading cause of injury-
related deaths nationwide in 2010.
 In the first seven years of the U.S.-IraqWar over
4,400 soldiers were killed, almost as many civilians
killed with guns in the U.S. every 7 weeks.
 Guns were used in 11,078 homicides in the U.S. in
2010, almost 35% of all gun deaths and over 68% of
all homicides.

4. Why Should You Be Informed?
 With the many deaths that occur because of
firearms I think everyone should have the safety to
know how to properly use and care for a gun.
Current state laws do not address laws that are
needed to provide more specific guidelines for those
buying a gun, using a gun, and storing a gun. If there
were stricter laws for gun owners when they do not
comply with current laws then there might be less
victims of gun violence.The challenge for all states is
to enact laws that enable American citizens to have
guns but pass laws that will increase safety
knowledge, registration requirements and more
thorough background checks.
