The under/over voltage protection circuit with time delay presented here is a low cost and reliable circuit for protecting such equipment’s from damages. Whenever the power line is switched on it gets connected to the appliance only after a delay of a fixed time. If there is hi/low fluctuations beyond sets limits the appliance get disconnected. The system tries to connect the power back after the specific time delay, the delay being counted from the time of disconnection. If the power down time (time for which the voltage is beyond limits) is less than the delay time, the power resumes after the delay: If it is equal or more, then the power resumes directly.
A switchgear or electrical switchgear is a generic term which includes all the switching devices associated with mainly power system protection. It also includes all devices associated with control, metering and regulating of electrical power system. Assembly of such devices in a logical manner forms a switchgear. This is the very basic definition of switchgear.

Switchgear plays an important role in electricity distribution and its performance significantly affects the overall performance of the system. Failure to efficiently disconnect faults elsewhere in the network or failure in switchgear itself is costly, resulting in additional loss of supply, damage to equipment and possibly fatal injury to personnel. It is therefore critically important that switchgear is operated and maintained correctly, within an overall asset management regime that is both economic and effective in securing a high level of system reliability.
This comprehensive workshop focuses on medium voltage switchgear, which comprises by far the bulk of switchgear on most electricity distribution systems. The emphasis is primarily on oil, air blast, SF6 and vacuum circuit breakers, but other forms of MV switchgear, for example ring main units and auto-reclosers will also be described.

CIRCUIT BREAKER
A circuit breaker is an automatically-operated electrical switch designed to protect an electrical circuit from damage caused by overload or short circuit. Its basic function is to detect a fault condition and, by interrupting continuity, to immediately discontinue electrical flow. Unlike a fuse, which operates once and then has to be replaced, a circuit breaker can be reset (either manually or automatically) to resume normal operation. Circuit breakers are made in varying sizes, from small devices that protect an individual household appliance up to large switchgear designed to protect high voltage circuits feeding an entire city.

Presentation on Over-/under-voltage protection of electrical applianceNishant Kumar
Sudden fluctuation in supply is a very big problem in industries and domestic applications. It causes a major loss for industries, offices and homes.
This project gives a low cost and powerful solution for this problem. This Circuit protects refrigerators ,ACs, Microwave ovens as well as other appliances from over and under voltage fluctuations.

2. Characteristics
Hysteresis character
◦ It latches to its last position, on or off
◦ Example, physical s/w – you s/w it on, it
remains on.
May be viewed as 2 transistors
working in pair.
Constructed from bipolar junction
technology.
4. Shockley Diode
Not to be confused with schottky diode
It is a four layer device
Also known as PNPN diode.
5. The Working of the Shockley
Diode
The four PNPN can be simplified to
two set of separate transistors, PNP
and NPN.
P N P
N P N
6. With high voltage, one of the transistor will be turned
on causing the other to be on. Once on, the
transistors latched. To turn off, the voltage must be
reduced to cause the current to drop below minimum
7. DIAC
Shockley diode works with DC.
For AC, 2 shockleys are joint.
The result is shown in the lower image
8. SCR
Silicon Controlled Rectifiers or
thyristors.
Used to rectify AC and control the
power output.
