Significant future growth opportunities exist in the Thai automotive industry, but Thai automotive parts suppliers may be held back from taking advantage of them due to Thailand’s labour shortage crisis – however, a new government modernisation policy combined with state-of the-art machinery will enable Thai manufacturers to seize these opportunities, save money and increase output and improve quality to a world class level.

1. The Thai automotive industry is
predicted to produce 5 million vehicles
per year by 2020. However, Thailand is
already faced with a severe shortage of
both skilled and unskilled workers - and
this is only going to get worse. The Thai
auto parts manufacturing sector is
expected to require around 185,000
new workers over the coming decade.
This is clearly the biggest long-term
problem faced by the Thai automotive
industry. How can Thai manufacturers
hope to meet this future demand if the
workers are not available?
Tax Incentives to Support
Modernisation
The answer to this is being provided
by the Thai government through a
brand new policy from the Thailand
Board of Investment (BOI) that will give
direct tax benefits for investments for
modernisation through the replacement
of old manual machines for modern
automated ones. Automotive parts
manufacturers that modernise and
invest in highly productive automated
equipment will get:
• exemption of import duty on the
machinery
• a corporate income tax rebate over
three years of up to 50% of the machinery
investment.
There has literally never been a better
time than now for Thai manufacturers
to modernise.

2. Thai Manufacturing 2.0
Now is the time for Thai Manufacturing 2.0 when Thai
manufacturers bring themselves up to international standards of
manufacturing. With this new promotion available, manufacturers
can save 50% off investment costs on upgrading their machinery, as
well as putting themselves in a position to save labour and boost
productivity at the same time. With new automated machines, such

Case Study – World Class Steering Knuckle
Production
Steering knuckles are difficult parts to machine with very com-plicated
geometries. With simple, classic machining centres, a
manufacturer uses 6-10 separate machines to complete all
the operations to produce the finished part. These ma-chines
would need on average six workers per shift to
operate all the machines. These machines would also take
up a significant amount of floor space, use a lot of energy
and require almost constant maintenance. Multiple set
ups of moving the part from machine to machine waste a

3. huge amount of valuable time and also mean introducing compound
errors.
On the other hand, if a Thai steering knuckle manufacturer was
to take advantage of the new government modernisation program,
they could replace the whole of their old classic inefficient produc-tion
system with a modern, highly productive manufacturing system
featuring multi-spindle horizontal five-axis machining centres from
SW and then could claim back half of the investment cost with the
new corporate income tax exemption. What was previously produced
with six machines and six workers could now be done with just one
highly productive SW machining centre and a single worker.
