This presentation gives context of the main problems of today's IT market solved by MODAClouds.
MODAClouds focus on 3 main innovative aspects, creating technology that :
- puts the focus on enabling Business-Driven QoS influencing the way Cloud applications are created and operated.
- enables DevOps methodologies
- facilitates living in a Multi-Cloud world

Good morning everyone, my name is Oliver Barreto and I am the exploitation manager of MODAClouds and I also coordinate exploitation team in Atos IT sector…
And I want to spend a few minutes summarizing the value of MODAClouds results …
But first,….
As part of the work done by the exploitation team, one key activity carried out has been monitoring the market… cloud computing market trends, drivers and challenges…
And let me begin by highlighting some of the main aspects we have found…
We have confirmed that the IT market is suffering a severe transition from providing just mere technology and infrastructures…
… to a more demanding context in which technology must be at the service of organizations and their demanding business models
A more demanding context where service, flexibility, agility and rapid market response are required at all costs… again, to meet companies requirements for todays’ economy....
… and in this context… we see that cloud computing is winning the battle with its definition of IT as a service…
Cloud provide business with flexibility, agility, and rapid responses at variable cost…
However, with the advent of cloud, IT must cope with new challenges that need to be addressed to fully take advantage of Cloud computing, especially in the enterprise context:
… we have several cloud providers with lots of options, with almost identical characteristics, quality, and cost… almost impossible to compare
... What do we do with existing applications, should we develop them from scratch when moving to the cloud? do we just migrate, or cloudify, some parts?... there are several technologies and providers, which one should I use?
…can we develop faster in the cloud? or better? ... can we optimize development processes, code, operations, etc ... in this new world ... IT has worked several years to have all this already optimized and running?
... is there an option for creating cloud infrastructures inhouse??? Externally???, or have a mix of both if it is best for the company’s goals and quality expected???
... In this case, can we retain control of the infrastructure? Of our service quality?... which in other words is….can we define functional requirements, and above all, requirements of our business model???
... Can we avoid risk? And… can we move services from this cloud provider to another if they offer more or they just don’t comply with our expectation ???
... Can I Improve Cloud design to be able to design once, and deploy in several providers, regardless of the technology, APIs and Management tools?
So ... there are several things to consider and take into account in the cloud world….
we see that in the market these problems are important… businesses, developers, cloud providers
… and also... managers, are expecting solutions that help them address with these questions…
Nowadays managers from all areas of the company, not only IT staff, are more involved in the process than ever, since they expect to use technology services
but the main take that we have after our analysis is that organizations are changing the pace and now are not only focused on technology itself, but the way in which technology is used to shape their business models, when needed, as needed, with the amount resources required at all times ... as a service …. in a world full of clouds, with different offerings…
Therefore, they expect certain aspect from cloud services…. Again… As we said… They expect flexibility, agility, and speed of response ...
And that means ...
Organizations now analyse if they can migrate their existing models to the cloud, if there are several options available, which is the best one, if they would be able to later retain control..
Organizations do not want to stick With just ONE provider
They have different requirements for Production Environments & Testing & Dev ... And They want to choose the Best Execution Venue according to their Business Needs
They require to be able to work with different providers for different parts of their business applications... but this doesn’t mean that we have to build again and again the same solution for different IT infrastructures…
And last but not least ... they want to monitor and respond to the QoS
... And yes ... of course !!! ... They need new Methodologies and Tools That Enable Faster time to market & Flexible Operations: such as DevOps ...
So ... there are several things to consider and take into account in the cloud world….

... Therefore ...
we see that we live in a world full of clouds!!!
A world in which cloud computing can be very helpful... but we must make them available to business by mitigating these obstacles and paving the ground with the right tools and technologies...
Having this context in mind, please let me now describe MODAClouds Value and our Approach to tackle the Cloud lifecycle!!!
In MODAClouds we focus our approach on two major aspects:
Design time
… and Runtime
... But we don’t stop there... we’ve worked hard during the last 3 years to create different technologies that provide value around three main aspects… and solve some of these problems….
First… (DevOps)
... In MODAClouds, we believe that these two phases must work together in a coordinated manner ... we believe in the DevOps model !!!
so we created our technology and tools with strong focus on the way they improve the interaction and collaboration of Development and Operation Teams…
we include the MODAClouds feedback loop and the ability to define at design time specific requirements that will be later used when operating the cloud applications enabling Dev & Ops teams to work together…. and empowering DevOps methodologies
Second (Business-Drive Requireents Focus)
We have put the focus on creating technology that helps incorporating Business-Driven requirements into the process to make the cloud work for the organization … these translates into MODAClouds ability to allow expressing and quantifying specific business and technical requirements early in the game … thanks to Cloud ML, one of the main technologies used by MODAClouds… which allows organizations to fine tune control of their business and the level of service offered
and third (Multi-Clouds Operations)
... And what’s even better…. we have done it to provide solutions for multi-cloud scenarios….
The technology provides an integrated solution capable of deploying, managing, selecting, monitoring, migrating or bursting to other clouds if needed… without worrying about compatilibty of underlying infrastructures
So….
MODAClouds is an example of a research project that has advanced the state of the art ….
… from pure technology, components… to various groups of packaged technologies, still in prototype version, but in a very close to market maturity level …that mitigate various of the already mentioned cloud problems in the full cloud lifecycle
... Especially with its approach to allow cloud applications to be designed, monitored and governed by business and technical quality requirements, what we call Business-Driven QoS
Finally, let me show you MODAclouds Consortium activities to create impact and exploitation routes with the results of the project…
The first aspect is that the project is supported by world-class technology companies and first-class european research and academic institutions…
And… all these partners have used, or are using MODAClouds technologies, to either create new services or improve existing offerings in the short and mid-term.
Clear examples are:
the strategic migration to the cloud of a current business application by BOC using MODAClouds technologies…
the knowledge and the technologies used by SOFTEAM to adopt “cloud” capabilities into their flagship design tool “Modelio”
use by ATOS of the SLA Tool to enhance current Cloud offerings
the case of CA using the DSS to optimize current portfolio management of CA’s products by helping in the decision making related to product localization strategy
... the use of automatic data migration technology generated in MODAClouds to improve the efficiency of CA's customer support processes
the introduction of “triggering” technology by FLEXIANT into their main commercial product - Cloud Orchestrator… a new capability developed using MODAClouds technology
Then MODAClouds project has been working to share all of its results and knowledge with the community from the very beginning:
... all the technology developed has been packaged under open source licenses and is available to the community since its first Releases.. back in 2013
… and now that we have released our final versions which are now more estable we are not only sharing the code, but also reaching out to the Open Source community and has established a campaign in conjunction with Modelio.org open source community
But our efforts do not stop there…. The consortium wants to extend the impact created with the results of the project by enabling sustainability after the project ends…
The members of the consortium believe that multi-cloud technologies will have an impact in the market in the near future, and we want to extend the impact of the results developed in the project after the project ends…
In these regards, the consortium has agreed to crete the figure of the MultiClouds Alliance, which is an initiative with the aim of creating an organization initialy in charge of joint promotion, fostering, thriving and leveraging the adoption and the evolution of technologies developed during MODAClouds project
… …especially the concepts of Business-Driven QoS and Multi-Clouds
Its purpose is also to attract third parties to join the Alliance and contribute as members or associates !!!
