2. WHAT ARE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
GOALS
• The Mobile industry has a high potential of supporting the Sustainable
Development Goal Nine (9) titled “ Decent Work and Economic Growth”.
• Before we begin, let us explain what sustainable development goals (SDG’s) are:
• Sustainable Development Goals: According to the UNDP, The Sustainable
Development Goals (SDGs), otherwise known as the Global Goals, are a universal
call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy
peace and prosperity.

3. HOW DOES MOBILE INDUSTRY SUPPORT
SDG’S
• According to the GSMA Mobile Industry Impact Report 2017, Mobile industry
supports sustainable development goals via the provision of the following:
• Improved Network infrastructure: These facilitate emergency communications and
play an important role during natural or climate change related disasters.
• Increased Connectivity: This improvement aids in the monitoring of environmental
and climate change indicators as well as raise the productivity levels of
manufacturing and business processes.
• Increased Mobile penetration and access: The application of Smart grids and smart
metering has led to the proliferation of one stop online payment solutions for
utilities

• According to the GSMA, Operational Eco-efficiency can be defined as a
management concept which links environmental and economic performance.
• The mobile industry aids the attainment of operational eco-efficiency via:
• Application of virtual networks to share resources
• Optimization of business processes
• Eco-Innovation (smart manufacturing)
• Ensure a zero waste culture (recycle by-products)

EFFICIENCY
• According to the GSMA 2017, operational eco-efficiency improves business and
environmental performance.
• Helps companies reduce cost and obtain competitive advantage.
• Ensures long term profitability and sustainability.
• Helps companies stay ahead of market and regulatory trends.

6. RECOMMENDATION
• Based on what we know about the relationship between mobile industry and
operational eco-efficiency in the preceding slides.
• Sustainable Development Goal Nine (9) titled “Decent Work and Economic Growth”
can certainly be met by the mobile industry taking into consideration the
application of operational eco-efficiency as one of its core tenets.
