Session: “Forming a Community of Character and Creativity”: Bridging Schools and the Community
Speaker: Mr. Barry Fennell, Project Manager, Family and Community Engagement Project, Co-operation Ireland.
1) Jose-Maria Fernandez proposes a "cancer megafund" that would invest in early-stage cancer research and development, spreading risk across 150 experimental treatments to attract serious investment and potentially generate profits to fund treatments that fail.
2) Duncan Higgons and Michael Davies debate the challenges of fundraising for healthcare ventures, noting the large costs involved, risk of failure, and lack of sexiness of some areas.
3) Jose-Maria argues that the megafund structure could make returns and risks depend more on scientific progress than financial markets, and that it has potential to be economically viable and profitable for investors based on simulations of cancer drug development over 20 years.
IMPACT OF MODERNITY ON MOSQUE ARCHITECTURE OF NORTHERN NIGERIA: A CRITICAL AN...zakari mohammed
Nigeria’s rich historical background has derived an exclusive indigenous Architecture that displays different variations and influences. Mosque Architecture happens to be one of the unique type of architecture for its primary function is a community worshiping centre.
The primary purpose of this article is to study and identify the essential elements of a mosque and their functions, and their development from the precolonial, colonial and post-colonial period as regards to changes in the morphology, symbolism, technology and design of mosques in Northern Nigeria. This article will focus on some selected mosques in Nigeria which represent the original traditional architecture through to the modern.
The changes made were examined based on characteristics of morphology, design articulation and technology based on the history of Hausa mosque architecture.
This was done through existing publication on the subject and the author’s experience.
Findings shows that the emergence of the colonial masters and some of the Arab merchants in Nigeria has affected the existing culture and traditions which obviously weakened the bonds between the traditional and modern architecture. Mosques were not only not conserved in their originality but changed thereby destroying the traditional forms.
The document discusses postmodernism and how it differs from modern thought. Postmodernism rejects universal truths and objective reality, seeing them as social constructs. It emphasizes relativity, fragmentation, and skepticism of grand narratives. Postmodernism has influenced many fields by challenging traditional concepts of knowledge, truth, identity and values.
Modernity focused on mass production, social classes, and science-aided progress. Postmodernity is characterized by fragmentation, pluralism, no absolutes, and individuals creating their own identities. Globalization has narrowed time and space while increasing interconnectedness through technology, economic changes, and political changes. Scholars debate whether postmodernity represents a new era or an intensification of modernity, and different theories offer explanations for today's rapid social changes under globalization.
Modernism began as a rejection of past ideas and cultural norms in the 19th century, driven by new ideas from evolution, psychology, and socialism. Modernism in art covered 1863-1960s and focused on new ideas and using techniques as subject matter over representing subjects. Postmodernism emerged in the 1970s from scrutiny of modernism, questioning its lack of diversity and utopian ideals. Postmodernism embraces irony, appropriation, juxtaposition, and examining bias through deconstruction.
ASEAN's Role on the Korean Peninsula: An Opportunity for the Future?GlobalPeaceFoundation
This document discusses North Korea's "Pyongjin strategy" of pursuing economic development and nuclear weapons simultaneously due to regime survival concerns. It analyzes North Korea's interest in the ASEAN development model and reforms in Vietnam and Singapore. The author proposes that ASEAN could play a role in capacity building for North Korean economic and political reforms by sharing experiences and acting as a neutral mediator, though notes ASEAN's limitations compared to Vietnam and Singapore.
China's Role in Korean Unification Vision and Northeast Asian Peace-BuildingGlobalPeaceFoundation
China has historically played an important role in influencing the Korean peninsula through military intervention and facilitating unification. As a neighbor and giant neighbor, China established a tributary system that allowed it to project power and influence over Korea. In ancient times, China directly controlled Korea at times and helped unify the peninsula under Silla. More recently during the Cold War, China supported North Korea against U.S. interests but has since taken a more neutral stance. Looking ahead, China's role in potential Korean unification could range from non-intervention to actively intervening, but it will likely focus on providing collective stability and security to the region during any transition process.
One Korea Unification Vision through Neutralization: What Should Be Done?GlobalPeaceFoundation
This document proposes a new unification formula for Korea called "One Korea through Neutralization." It begins by describing the conflicting unification formulas of North and South Korea - the DFRK formula proposed by North Korea which calls for a federal system, and South Korea's KNC formula which envisions a three-stage process. The author argues a common formula is needed. He proposes neutralizing extreme thinking on both sides and establishing a Peace through Neutralization policy at the domestic, inter-Korean, and international levels as an alternative to the two existing formulas. A five-stage roadmap to achieve this neutralized unified Korean state is outlined.

The document discusses Japan's policy toward normalization with North Korea and the potential economic and security benefits of doing so. It notes Japan's policy primarily follows that of the US and South Korea. While there is some interest in normalization due to expected economic benefits, Japan also has concerns about how improved North Korea relations could negatively impact its security alliance with the US. The document argues Japan could gain economic benefits from greater regional economic cooperation if tensions were reduced and outlines how North Korea has made past concessions to pursue normalization with the US and improve relations with South Korea and Japan.

Global Peace Foundation Nigeria's Grassroots Peacebuilding Initiative Report ...GlobalPeaceFoundation
The One Family Under God campaign, supported by the Global Peace Foundation Nigeria is a grassroots peacebuilding effort that engages faith leaders in building connections across Muslim and Christian communities in Kaduna State. The initiative has effectively improved communities and mitigated violent extremism, and is set to expand to more communities in 2017.
The All-Lights Village Project, begun in 2012, is a comprehensive community-development initiative of the Global Peace Foundation that begins by providing solar powered light to remote villages in the Philippines. The project has built public and private partnerships to improve education, health and sanitation, while supporting villager-led economic development initiatives. See it's intentional values-based approach and impact to date.
This document provides an overview of KOICA's new development models, which aim to find creative solutions to development challenges through innovative technology and inclusive business approaches. The new models include the Creative Technology Solution Program, which funds cutting-edge and innovative technologies; the Inclusive Business Solution, which establishes business value chains to empower local industries and provide jobs; and Global Partnerships with organizations like USAID and Max Planck Society to co-fund large-scale challenge programs. The development models seek to promote inclusive innovation, reduce inequality, and strengthen development effectiveness through science, technology and partnerships.
Final 20170209 gpc 2017 clean water and environmental service initiative-ro p...GlobalPeaceFoundation
This initiative aims to promote clean water, environmental services, and peace through community mobilization, public participation, and partnership. Major programs include regularly cleaning the polluted Bagmati River and managing the Guheshwori Peace Park, providing environmental awareness training and solid waste management programs, hosting discussion forums on sustainability topics, and celebrating United Nations days focused on water, environment, and peace. The goal is to preserve local culture and the river ecology while improving health and sanitation through volunteerism and service.
20170217 disaster risk reduction & youth capacity building rise nepalGlobalPeaceFoundation
This document discusses disaster risk reduction and youth capacity building efforts in Nepal following the 2015 earthquake. It describes how a volunteer team provided relief to victims and formed teams to distribute tents, food, solar lamps, and other supplies. The volunteers also helped build and light shelters. In 2016, the organization distributed zinc sheets and solar lights to families and schools. They monitored transitional shelters and found that government relief was inadequate. The document recommends continued support for permanent housing, disaster risk reduction training for youth, and community development projects.
This document discusses different types of capital needed for disaster recovery including physical, human, financial, social, infrastructure, and education capital. It also proposes a system using a combination of hardware like education and infrastructure improvements along with software like volunteers to aid in prevention, recovery, and risk reduction from disasters. The proposed system aims to address needs over urgent, medium, and long term timeframes working with foreign, local, and global communities.
This document discusses Korean reunification and public opinion on the topic. It presents data from opinion polls showing South Koreans have become more supportive of reunification in recent years. It estimates the large economic gains that could result from reunification, with South Korea experiencing 11% annual GDP growth and North Korea seeing over 20 times income growth within 10 years. However, it also acknowledges the substantial costs of reunification, estimating $1.4-1.8 trillion would be required over 20 years. The document argues these costs could be minimized through separate economic systems initially and decreased military spending, while the economic benefits of reunification could be substantial in the long run.
1) Japan aims to strengthen its alliances with the US and South Korea to counter China's rising influence in Northeast Asia and address the security issues posed by North Korea.
2) Japan is pursuing two foreign policy strategies - reinforcing its alliance with the US while also attempting independent diplomacy with North Korea to resolve territorial disputes, though the latter has been unsuccessful due to tensions over wartime history and North Korea's nuclear program.
3) South Korea and Japan reached an agreement in 2015 to "remedy the painful past" regarding wartime comfort women, but it was criticized for lacking victim consent and reflecting US interests in trilateral cooperation against North Korea.
The document provides a summary of various news items related to North Korea from February 28, 2017. It mentions the number of North Korean defectors, a diplomat who defected from North Korea's embassy in Britain, defectors who failed to return to the border, South and North Korean weightlifters meeting, South Korea resuming anti-North propaganda broadcasts, North Korea resuming anti-South propaganda, a North Korean band's performance, figures purged from North Korea's government, North Korea resuming random number broadcasts, Kim Jong-un visiting an island, figures involved in North Korea's nuclear weapons program, the range of North Korea's missiles, floods in North Korean villages, flood restoration efforts without equipment, officials kneeling before Kim

Study of Paraguay Growth Opportunities during First Symsposium on Paraguay-Ko...GlobalPeaceFoundation
This document discusses Paraguay's economic outlook in light of new global trends. It notes that while global recovery is underway, emerging markets face challenges from the US Federal Reserve's normalization of monetary policy. However, Paraguay is well positioned due to strong economic growth over the past decade supported by prudent macroeconomic policies and structural reforms. Paraguay has low and stable inflation, a flexible exchange rate, large foreign reserves, and a sound banking sector. While volatility is expected as global monetary conditions change, Paraguay's macroeconomic fundamentals provide buffers to weather potential headwinds.

The NYCI report ‘Time to Go?’ launched on Thursday, 9th May is the first qualitative study exploring the experience and impact of emigration on Ireland’s youth. The results provide an insight into the opportunities and difficulties faced by young emigrants in Canada, the UK and beyond.
“Over the past 2 years over a quarter of our population has been affected by the emigration of a close family member, and half of our 18 to 24 years olds have said they would consider emigrating themselves, so it is vital that this issue is given the consideration it deserves, and that a Government policy response to tackle the issue and support our young emigrants is developed,” said NYCI’s Marie-Claire McAleer speaking at the launch.
