THE HOLIDAYS ARE UPON US ONCE AGAIN! Every year they seem to fly up,
and no matter how much prep is done, they are here and gone in the blink of an eye.
Time, in my opinion, is one of the greatest gifts a person can give. Whether it is time
spent with friends, family, in solitude, traveling, at home, snuggling pets and kids,
volunteering, or any combination; it is precious. Time spent with family and friends
is my favorite part of the holidays. We cook, laugh, reminisce about old memories,
and at the same time—we make new ones. These moments are cherished, especially now when we live in a society where everything moves at warp speed and
people feel accountable 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
For the December issue, we spent professional time getting to know some fabulous
businesses and people around the Twin Cities. Dr. Sam LaChance of Greenway
Dental has opened the doors to a new outlook on dentistry and talks about how
he plans to serve patients in the Uptown area. We spoke with Schmitt Music, a
company which is soon to be 125 years old, and learned how they are combining
their longstanding expertise in music with new technology. We interviewed Alisa
Halek-Schoenack, owner of Nedia Hair Loss Salon and Spa, whose team has more
than 100 years of experience combined in the hair loss industry. And finally, we
learned that behind the historic walls of the Alfred Pillsbury mansion, lies more than
what meets the eye. Not only does this property reflect a time past, but it bridges
organizations and charities within the community.
This holiday season, I hope you have the opportunity to spend and receive time with
those you are closest to, to smile and share moments together, and to truly focus
undivided attention on the things that matter most.
Wishing you all the happiest of holiday seasons and a safe New Year.

Time—a Precious Gift
LIFESTYLE LETTER
THE HOLIDAYS ARE UPON US ONCE AGAIN! Every year they seem to fly up,
and no matter how much prep is done, they are here and gone in the blink of an eye.
Time, in my opinion, is one of the greatest gifts a person can give. Whether it is time
spent with friends, family, in solitude, traveling, at home, snuggling pets and kids,
volunteering, or any combination; it is precious. Time spent with family and friends
is my favorite part of the holidays. We cook, laugh, reminisce about old memories,
and at the same time—we make new ones. These moments are cherished, espe-
cially now when we live in a society where everything moves at warp speed and
people feel accountable 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Wishing you all the happiest of holiday seasons and a safe New Year,

14. TIMES PAST
THE
SOUND OF
INNOVATION
ON A RECENT RAINY AFTERNOON IN EDINA,
MARK MUELLER SITS DOWN TO A STEINWAY
PIANO AT SCHMITT MUSIC, A 123-YEAR-OLD,
FIVE-GENERATION FAMILY BUSINESS. Mark
has been playing and selling Steinway pianos for
over 30 years.
It’s an ordinary day, but Mark happens to be
playing an extraordinary piano. Steinways are con-
sidered the creme de la creme of concert pianos.
Few stores can even sell them; Steinway & Sons has
to actually appoint dealers. Schmitt Music has long
been a dealer. They do well as a dealer, too; Schmitt
Music has even been designated Dealer of the Year
in the past.
This particular piano that Mark is playing—the
Spirio—represents a new invention that is reinvig-
orating the industry. In the last 15 to 20 years, the
piano business has struggled, says Greg Mack,
director of marketing for Schmitt Music. The econ-
omy plays a role in that. But largely, in today’s cul-
ture of instant gratification and digital everything,
people in the United States aren’t as willing to
become a disciplined piano student. It takes time
and effort to develop the skill, even when someone
is naturally talented.
The Steinway Spirio R is exactly the technol-
ogy to get all generations excited about learning
piano, as it blends digital innovation with the clas-
sical instrument that generations of people have
been enjoying. Thanks to a computer processor
that connects to an iPad, the piano can play itself.
A music enthusiast can play videos of famous

classical musicians on the iPad and then suddenly the piano
begins playing as though a ghost is tapping the keys exactly as
the music was originally recorded. The same thing happens when
a person records a song they played; they can play it back on the
iPad, and then the piano begins playing live.
This technology speaks to everyone from piano virtuosos to hob-
byists to people who love music and want to use it as an entertain-
ment tool in their home or business.
“Things like this make (the piano) more fun and interesting,”
Mark says.
The Steinway Spirio—which comes in a variety of models—is an
investment, starting at about $100,000. But it’s a highly specialized
piece that has only been available to the public in the last five years,
Mark says. It’s been in development for about 10 years. With 12,000
parts, the company only makes a few thousand pianos a year for
distribution across the world. Each one takes nearly a year to make.
Greg and Mark are excited about what’s ahead for the piano
industry. Even as the business ebbs and flows with the economy
and with the digital era we’re in, music is a timeless language. From
Beethoven to Billy Joel to Lady Gaga and beyond, music doesn’t
discriminate who it speaks to. This art connects people regardless
of age, race, culture, ethnicity or ability level. And, Greg points out, it
is scientifically proven to help all ages function as well as they can.
“It’s really a human thing,” Mark says.

NEDIA SUPPORTS THE HAIR LOSS COMMUNITY
GIVING BACK
Beautiful Inside

21. AIR LOSS IS NEVER EASY. It can affect men, women and even children. It can come in
several forms and be associated with alopecia, hypotrichosis, age, anxiety, stress, cancer
and many other health-related issues. Having experienced it herself, Alisa Halek-Schoenack
took her 24 years in the salon industry, coupled with the operation of Fantasia Salon and
Hair Loss Center, and made it her mission to create a space where people suffering from hair
loss can feel at ease. With the help of her husband, Aaron Schoenack, they secured a space
in Minnetonka, pinpointed new needs for the industry, and renovated accordingly to fit their
vision of incorporating ultimate comfort for the guest.
Alisa’s appreciation for the salon business began at a young age when she would accom-
pany her mother to Fantasia Salon in Crystal, Minnesota of which her mother was a guest
for 50 years. Originally owned by Twila Donley, who had struggled with her own hair loss
issues, Fantasia took a bolder step in the ‘80s making giving back to the hair loss community
a priority. In 2017, Alisa reached out to Twila for business mentorship, and in conversing, the
question came up as to who would be the salon’s predecessor. Alisa asked if Twila would
consider her. Fast forward to today, the team and vision continue on through Alisa’s direc-
tion, and they have become a very strong, close-knit group that has rebranded as Nedia Hair
Loss Salon and Spa.
Being a privately and family-owned business, Nedia has the flexibility to ensure treat-
ments and solutions can be customized to the guest—starting with the design of the space
itself. One waiting area is comfortable and shielded from the rest of the salon where guests
can rest peacefully and privately while waiting for services. If guests feel more social, there
is also a secondary waiting area. There are private manicure and pedicure rooms with a
semi-private option where one can choose to lounge in luxury solo or with a friend. There
are private, soundproof luxury hair loss treatment rooms where guests can work with their
salon expert one-on-one as well as traditional salon stations throughout. Alisa explains
that many going through hair loss or oncology services will not seek a traditional salon
spa experience due to the investment of a hairpiece or wig. A comfortable environment
is key. Those going through oncology treatments are sensitive to many things, and the
Nedia staff has oncology-trained service providers who are equipped to handle a variety of
needs. Oftentimes, spa locations just aren’t equipped to handle the sensitivity and privacy
the hair loss guest is seeking.
H

23. The Nedia staff is intent on caring for the whole
guest, including mind and body. The team carries more
than 100 years of experience combined and understands
the importance of care. Their level of compassion for the
guest goes beyond just another salon service; it centers
around making someone feel safe. Alisa describes the
team as “multigenerational, caring, compassionate, loyal,
loving, giving, honest and hardworking.” On the retail
and product side, Nedia carries Davines, a natural line
from Italy whose mission aligns closely with Nedia’s and
is rooted in natural resources and giving back to the
community. Nedia has also seen great results using
the HLCC hair loss line which is amazing for guests
who are searching for a healthy environment for hair
growth. Nedia also carries one of the largest selections
of hairpieces and wigs in the midwest which vary in
price, color and length, and can be customized to how
the guest wants to look and feel.
Alisa admits that a lot of the drive behind their business
has to do with their son, family and a focus on how they
can give back to guests going through hair loss. Nedia has
partnerships with North Memorial Health Hospital, Gilda’s
Club Twin Cities and Firefly Sisterhood just to name a
few. They also offer a complimentary haircut when a guest
donates their hair to Children with Hair Loss. Nedia is a
beacon of light in what can sometimes be a difficult and
dark world. When asked what the most rewarding part of
the business is, Alisa says, “making a difference in guests’
lives every moment, every day.”

Minneapolis Lakes |24 December 2019
25. THE ALFRED PILLSBURY MANSION, LOCATED
ON E. 22ND ST., AND NESTLED IN THE
WHITTIER NEIGHBORHOOD, IS A SIGHT TO
BEHOLD. The incredible 10,000-square-foot lime-
stone home was constructed in 1903 by Alfred
Pillsbury himself along with Ernest Kennedy as the
lead architect. One of the many large homes built
by prominent families at the time, the mansion sits
where what was then considered to be the edge of
town. Although they had no children, Pillsbury and
his wife were known to be art collectors, specifically
Chinese jade and artifacts of the east. A portion of
their collection still resides not far from the home
in the Alfred Pillsbury Gallery at the Minneapolis
Institute of Art. Designed in the English Tudor style,
this property is a beautiful reminder of a time and
place in history, yet it has been restored to remain
relevant today. CONTINUED >
25| Minneapolis LakesDecember 2019
26. Purchased in 2002 by Uri and Melissa
Camarena, the property was in dire need of
some attention. When asked what drew the
couple to the home initially, Uri expresses
that they, “love architecture and the historic
side of things. We also love to restore homes,
and we saw the potential in it. Frankly, we
wanted to rescue it.”
In this case, the old adage, “Home is
where the heart is,” most definitely rings
true. The Camarenas committed to restoring
its beauty while at the same time maintain-
ing the historical integrity. They have lived in
the home for almost 20 years.
“We love the convenience,” Uri
says. “We have been respectful of the
architecture of the house. We were also
fortunate that the house had not been
abused structurally. They had not torn
down walls.”
The Camarenas put a new kitchen in,
updated electrical and bathrooms and
installed air conditioning. One of the
larger projects included the addition of
an attached and heated four-car garage,
which was done under the Minneapolis
Heritage Preservation Commission. But,
for all the new that has brought this beau-
tiful home up to date, many of the original
elements remain including the 17th cen-
tury, all oak library which Mr. Pillsbury had
shipped over from England. What used to
be a vault, now named the “Tequila Room”
boasts secret doors with hidden passages
and remains perfect for entertaining. The
Camarenas say that the changes they have
made provide, “a very liveable house.”
“I love history and architecture ... and feel
so fortunate that we were able to be part of
that. That we are able to enjoy it.”
After purchasing, they realized there
was a bigger, more charitable purpose
for the 10,000 square feet. Both wanted to
go beyond just loving the home itself and
decided to share it with others.
“We could support some of the organiza-
tions that we love and contribute to by let-
ting them use the house. We open the house
to those organizations on average, about
twenty times per year.”
If there is one thing the Camarena’s feel
fortunate about in regards to events at the
home, it has been, “the opportunity to meet
a lot of really great people. These are people
who care about the community, and we can
be more of an active part in the organiza-
tions we support and give back.”
With all of the art, history, and fundraising
that has been done here, it appears that 116
E. 22nd St. has a heart of its own.
“WE COULD SUPPORT SOME OF THE ORGANIZATIONS THAT WE LOVE AND CONTRIBUTE TO
BY LETTING THEM USE THE HOUSE. WE OPEN THE HOUSE TO THOSE ORGANIZATIONS ON
AVERAGE, ABOUT TWENTY TIMES PER YEAR.”

29. EVEN BEFORE DR. SAM LACHANCE
OPENED HIS PRIVATE DENTISTRY
PRACTICE IN MINNEAPOLIS, HE KNEW
HE HAD SOMETHING UNIQUE TO
OFFER PATIENTS. He speaks to people in
a way that educates them and puts them
at ease and helps bring more clarity to the
complex world of healthcare.
Dr. LaChance opened Greenway
Dental in September after working in a
group practice in the dentistry field for
the last 12 years. He graduated from
the University of Minnesota’s dental
school in 2007. A science lover since
he was a kid, LaChance also has a
degree in zoology from the University of
Wisconsin-Madison.
This is his first private practice, which is
nestled in the Whittier neighborhood at 24th
and Lyndale, an ideal location on a thor-
oughfare in Uptown.
“I’m loving the neighborhood,” he says. “All
the patients we’ve gotten so far are so nice.”
At the core of it, Dr. LaChance wanted
to create a company rooted in clear and
transparent communication with patients.
He says most dentists are introverted and
science-minded, though maybe not always
the best communicators. He wants to build

30. trusting relationships that last and to deliver care that
makes everyone feel good. Keeping that in mind, he
specifically hires people so the entire team works from
the same core values. A small but mighty core group
runs the day-to-day operations in Uptown, including Dr.
LaChance and his wife, Claire, and four employees.
“Oftentimes, you as a dentist might know what a
patient should have, but [dentists are] not good at con-
veying that information to patients,” he says. “That was
my whole shtick with this practice is making sure that
patients left happy and understood what they got and
why it was needed.”
Another one of Dr. LaChance’s areas of expertise is
helping calm, anxious patients. Not only is anxiety the
most common mental health problem in the United
States, according to the Anxiety and Depression
Association of America, but some patients have specific
fears around getting dental work done. So in addition to
the service that Greenway Dental offers, its office decor,
color coordination and overall aesthetic were designed
to calm patients.
Dr. LaChance is passionate about the field and
knows it deeply. In fact, he was awarded the “New
Dentist Leadership Award” in 2015 from the Minnesota
Dental Association during the Star of the North Dental
Convention. His past community involvement includes
serving as treasurer of the St. Paul District Dental Society,
as well as serving as a board member and leader of the
education committee for the St. Paul Executive Council.
He also volunteers for Give Kids a Smile, Mission of
Mercy and the Hope Dental Clinic.
Greenway Dental’s services include preventive work
such as cleanings and exams, dental sealants, fluoride
treatments, sports guards and nightguards. The clinic
also offers cosmetic services such as porcelain veneers,
take-home whitening trays and Invisalign, as well as
restorative services such as tooth-colored fillings, den-
tal crowns, dental bridges, implants, extractions, bone
grafts and more.
Originally from Northern Wisconsin near the Upper
Peninsula of Michigan, Dr. LaChance and his wife—who
have known each other since teenagehood—live in St.
Paul. They are raising two daughters and have created
this business together.
He says he enjoys the Whitter neighborhood, and he’s
looking forward to becoming more involved.
“I’m excited to grow,” he says. “I’m on a mission and I
want to stick to it.”
