Four workers were killed in separate workplace incidents this week, shattering many families. The Chief Prevention Officer is calling on all workplace parties to take their health and safety responsibilities seriously to prevent further fatalities. Ministry of Labour inspectors will take a zero-tolerance approach to violations and hazards. All workers and executives have a legal responsibility under the Occupational Health and Safety Act to ensure workplace safety and will face consequences for not doing so.

These are pointlessandsenselessworkplace fatalities. It’sthe law to keepall workerssafe inthe
Province of Ontario.ThroughthisstatementI’mcallingonthe workplace partiestotake onthis serious
responsibilitytokeepall workerssafe. Ministryof Labourinspectorswill aggressivelybe usingazero-
tolerance approachto recklessviolationsandhazards.
The Occupational HealthandSafetyActand itsregulationsare the law. Everyone inthe workplace –
seniorexecutives,owners/operators,directors,managers,supervisors,workers –isexpectedtoobey
the act andits regulations. It’sthe law. There are noexcuses. There will be consequences.
All of us have a responsibilityforworkforce safety. Preventinginjuriesandfatalitieshastobe top of
mindeveryworkday. Notone of us wantsto be part of that nextstatistic. All of usmusttake ownership
of ourresponsibilitiesonthe job. You cannotsay: “It’snot my problem, it’snotpartof myjob.” Health
and safetyisyourjob. It is a part of everybody’sjob.
