WHAT IS MIND UPLOADING?
“Mind upload is a popular application for the
process of transferring a collection of a person's
mind, memories, personality, and attributes from its
original biological brain to an artificial computer
substrate. ”
2
INTRODUCTION
• This is also known as whole brain emulation
• Alternative applications for mind uploading can be found
in fiction and non-fiction,
– mind transfer
– Offloading
– side loading, etc.
• They all related to the similar common concept of
shifting the mind to another substrate.
3
• It mimics the same memories, intelligence, identity,
personality, and consciousness of the original person.
• If the uploading of the mind is successful, it will allow
people to live much longer, because it will be easier to
cure health problems and the effects of aging if they
need more than just a few lines of code change.
4
• Because the properties of human intelligence are often
considered inseparable from their biological substrates,
some are strongly opposed to uploading the mind.
• The concept of uploading is fully consistent with the
causal action philosophy that is popular among brain
science scientists.
• The brain is defined not by the substance from which
they are made, but by the causal interactions and
activities of its constituents.
5
Requirements for mind uploading
1. High-resolution scanners, such as an electron
microscope or nano machines.
2. A computer with a large amount of memory storage and
processing power, when the data arrives, it is stored
and executed as a program after scanning.
3. A virtual environment for uploading to live as soon as
the upload process is complete. This could be similar to
a more advanced version of MMORPG, such as
Second Life or World of Warcraft.
6
The success levels for brain emulation
The process is
still incomplete,
and the risks to
participants are
significant,
especially in the
early stages of
development.
7
Digital Dangers
• The digitized mind will theoretically be free from
biological threats such as toxins but will be open to new
risks.
• After uploading, the brain can be exposed to malicious
intrusion, re-programming, intensive search or even
copying against their will.
• Biologists can build a false history by manipulating the
environment of a virtual mind to divert the wrong mind.
• A controller can slow down or freeze an imitation if it
operates outside certain parameters.
8
Implications
• Political and economical implications
• If imitations work faster than human beings,
human leaders will not have enough time to
make wise decisions or discuss
• People can react violently against the growing
imitation power
9
• Ethical and legal implications
– Animal welfare
– Artificial consciousness
– Legal rights of emulations
10
Relevant Technologies
• Simulation model scale
• Nano technology
• Serial sectioning
• Brain imaging
11
Uploading by destructive
procedures
• Microtome procedure
• Moravec procedure
• Nanoreplacement procedure
12
Non destructive procedures
• Gamma ray holography
• X-ray holography
• MRI
• Biphoton interferometry
• Correlation mapping
13
Benefits of Mind Uploading
• Massive economic growth
• Intelligence enhancement
14
Applications
• Brain pacemakers
• Immortality
• Backup
• Uploaded astronaut
