This document provides frequently asked questions (FAQ) and guidance for a midterm exam presentation on performance conventions in Ancient Greek theatre. Students must give a 7-10 minute presentation choosing one convention - mask, voice, or gesture - to demonstrate. They should discuss the cultural/theoretical context of Ancient Greek theatre for 4-6 minutes and then spend 2-3 minutes demonstrating their practical exploration of the convention through a short "work-in-progress" theatre moment. Students should reflect on the impact of exploring this convention on their development as a performer. Rehearsal with peers is recommended and simple props like paper bag masks are allowed. The presentation structure suggested is introduction to tradition/context, discussion of chosen convention/exploration

Theatricality for this exercise is looking at a real-life event and observing how artistic, theatrical elements—staging (the movement of the people), and the stage set-up (scenery), costuming, lighting, sound and even scripts and acting—are utilized to impact an audience. When completing this activity, I encourage you to examine the way in which the “creators” and “performers” of the event are manipulating (and I don’t necessarily mean manipulate in a negative way) the “audience” for a desired outcome.
DESCRIPTION:
I highly suggest that you complete the readings for Module 1 first. Then, select and attend a local event—political rally, parade, church service, athletic event—any event that you feel lends itself to elements of theatricality. Please attend safely in this Covid world. If we need to find a virtual event for safety sake, please get in touch with me as soon as you can. Do not choose to see a play or a movie; you are examining a non-theatrical event that borrows elements of theatre to be more impactful. Photograph or attain printed materials/ticket stubs to submit as verification of attendance along with your paper. Use the following questions as a guide in writing a

As a way of experiencing the Humanities beyond your classroom, computer, and textbook, you are asked to do a certain type of “cultural activity” that fits well with our course and then report on your experience. Your instructor will require you to propose an activity and get instructor approval before you do it and report on it (students should look for any instructions in that respect). Every effort should be made to ensure that this is a hands-on experience (not a virtual one), that this activity fits the HUM 111 class well, and that the activity is of sufficient quality for this university course. The two (2) key types of activities are a museum visit or a performance.
Note:
This must not be a report on the same activity (and certainly not the same report) as done for another class, like HUM 112. For instance, one might go to the same museum as done for HUM 112, but this HUM 111 report will focus on entirely different works and displays.
Visit a museum or gallery exhibition or attend a theater or musical performance before the end of Week 9. The activity (museum or performance) should have content that fits our course well. Have fun doing this.
Write a two to three (2-3) page report (500-750 words) that describes your experience.
Clearly identify the event location, date attended, the attendees, and your initial reaction upon arriving at the event.
Provide specific information and a description of at least two (2)
pieces
(e.g., art, exhibits, music, etc.).
Provide a summary of the event and describe your overall reaction after attending the event.
Use at least the class text as a reference (additional sources are fine, not necessary unless required by your content). Your report should include connections you make between things observed in your activity and things learned in the course and text.
Note:
Submit your cultural activity choice to the instructor for approval before the end of Week 5 (earlier is even better). Look for guidance from the instructor for how or where to make your proposal. You shoulddedicate 4to 6 minstalkingabout the Theatre Tradition(AncientGreekTheatre)youchose and
its cultural and theoretical context and then spend the next 2 to 3 mins. Then you have to physically
demonstrate yourown practical and physical explorations of the performance convention you chose and
itsapplicationtoa momentof theatre. At the end you must reflect on the impact this has had on you as a
performer and as a learner.

Do not letthe wordsmisleadyou.WhatisAncientGreekTheatre anditscharacteristics,whytheywere
usingmasks,whythey hadto do biggestures,whythe voice hadto be strong,whatthe chorus or the
performerwere doing, howitwasconnectedtodemocracyetc.
5. Physicallydemonstrate?
Yes,here is the catch you shouldPERFORM the aspectyouchosen. It isadvisable topresentyourmoment
of theatre witha"stop and start" approach within the main presentation, in order to explain and analyse
the relevantpointsregardingthe use of Mask,Voice,Gesture inAncientGreekTheatre and,itscultural and
theoretical contexts.
6. Moment of Theatre?
Your presentation includes the application of the research (we have done in class for the Ancient Greek
Theatre) toa "work-in-progress" demonstration of an appropriate moment of theatre that demonstrates
and explainsthe performance convention youhave practicallyandphysicallyexplored.Forexample find or
construct any type of mask (it could be a paper bag with holes for the eyes and mouth) and try to say out
loudany small passage froma playthat youlike orsaw (choose anythingfromPersesthatwe saw together
if nothing comes to your mind). Pick something small, no more that 3 or 5 lines
or
2. choose to use a momentfroma story youhave writtenyourselveswhich you think best demonstrates and
explains the use of Mask or Gesture or Voice in Ancient Greek Theatre.
Rememberyour Momentof Theatre will be presentedasa "work in progress" which will not be expected
to be a polished performance.
7. Reflecton the impact?
The impactthat yourexplorationof yourMomentof Theatre had on yourlearningand your development
as a performer. To putit insimple words….When you wear your mask or you performed your chosen lines
with Maskon or withbig, ritualistic Gestures or in rhyme in a loud Voice in an open space… How that make
you feel, whatwastheimpact to someonewho saw you and was it different than your experience acting in
melodrama?
8. Do I have to say all… but there is no time?
You have to CHOSE whatto say and leave onlythe informationthatisimportantforthe conventionyou
chose to workwith(Mask, Gesture,Voice).
9. But I can not find or construct a mask or costume and this essential formy presentation!
You do nothave to… the IBOTh.Arts Guide states:‘Where there are keyproductionelementsof the
traditionthatare intrinsictothe performance conventionbeingexplored(such asbasiccostume,props,set
piecesorstage layout) andthat are deemedessential tothe demonstration,itisrecommendedthatthese
productionelementsare createdorsourcedas "mock-ups"(forexample,simple piece of fabrictosuggest
costume,cardboardrepresentationsof props,markedoutspace toshow scale and layoutof the stage
space) to preventstudentsfromspendingtime andresourcesonelementsthatare notassessed.’So,aswe
said a paperbag with 3 holesfor eyesand mouth to use asa Mask or an old blanket to use as a Costume.

11. Can someone helpme?
No DURING the presentationbuyISTRONGLYADVISEYOU to pair up witha classmate andREHEARSE a few
day BEFORE yourexams.Tell him/hertoask questionsandchallenge youtobe clearerinthe expression of
your understanding of the world theatre tradition and your experience of the process of practical
exploration.Thismayinvolvequestionand answer sessions, support with choosing a moment of theatre,
gainingfeedbackonthe presentationandother structured coaching activities. Key interactions with peer
mentors (who may or may not be members of the IB theatre class parents, friends etc) must be clearly
recordedin the theatre journal andaddressedin the presentation where the studentmustreflect on how

performance and demonstrate the process of their explorations (such as projections, video extracts,
handouts, images, props, photographs and so on).

Where resourcesare usedto enhance the presentation,copiesof these resourcesshouldbe submitted
alongwiththe listof sources(especiallyif theseresourceswerenotclearlyseenorunderstoodwithinthe

photographsthatmay have beenseenduringthe presentation.
