Spencer provided excellent support throughout his placement, absorbing responsibilities from the previous intern and building relationships that allowed him to successfully transition several projects to a new support team. He showed strong independent problem-solving skills and quickly learned new technologies like SQL and Business Objects. A highlight was leading the successful delivery of Phase 3 of the Cocoa Life project. While Spencer consistently demonstrated an ability to work independently and take ownership, he can further develop his ability to directly confront challenges and strengthen his business understanding. Overall, his manager rated his performance as exceeding expectations.
2. Placement
Performance
Early Careers Reflections – By Student Line Manager feedback
The what:
Performance
against
placement
objectives
Handover from Last year’s Intern – I have absorbed the handover from last years intern via various mediums of communication with relevant
personnel. Building relationships, listening and understanding others, I am now capable of performing enhancements to my responsibilities. New
responsibilities have arose have evolved the expected workload of the myself which inevitably will need to be passed on to the new intern and
offshore support. I believe I have maintained the key responsibilities well to provided sufficient support.
Nielsen Support – over the last 12 months I have maintained the Nielsen process and offered support to end users and Nielsen themselves.
Through key communication we have worked together to solve issues with connectivity and delivery of databases. It has been decided this process
should be transitioned to Infosys the offshore support team to manage going forwards after my departure. As a result myself and Infosys have
worked together for the past 3 months to find the solutions. The transition has been successful and Infosys now have a solid base of knowledge for
this process.
Cocoa Life Project – I believe the project has grown in capability within the last 12 months, my concentration was based on the gathering of data
and alignment of function and requirements within the application. The gathering templates now offer clarity on what data is required whilst we
have also designed a new method to gather data from farms which are new to the project. The tool itself has become a dynamic asset to the
project thanks to the ideas from all those involved in cocoa life. The specification which I put together based on those ideas was fulfilled by Infosys
who developed the tool and implemented the changes. I do believe the tool is much closer to achieving its potential of being a reliable and
resourceful asset to the project.
SharePoint and Nintex workflow support and development – this year was my first exposure to Sharepoint and its capabilities. My knowledge
has grown along with my confidence. Throughout the year the requirements of sites have evolved and I was responsible to action those changes.
As my knowledge developed more end users came to me with their issues, without going to my manager first. I would like to think this suggests
their confidence in me. Similar to Nielsen all Sharepoint responsibilities have recently been transitioned to Infosys due to my departure. All
documentation has been provided and we currently work in harmony providing continuous support and maintenance of sites. The infosys
contractor who now supports Sharepoint comes to me to confirm the actions.
Business Objects – this tool has become a huge responsibility throughout the second half of my time here, and is a clear indicator of how the job
evolves. This tool incorporates the data foundation/ structure to all SAP business reports. This responsibility requires me align tables together
creating the link between data sets and to produce a report based from those links. Continuous updates to existing reports and the creation of
others consist of the development of the report base and then communications with the HP support team to ensure the data universe is published
which allows the data to be retrieve in the WEB application. This communication has been vital in the development.
Handover to next year’s Intern – handover has commenced for the new intern. Sharepoint and InfoPath have been explained and practiced with
my supervision and now the new intern feels comfortable. After more exposure I'm sure they will become more fluent. Cocoa life has also been
handed over, the new intern can now identify the templates and the aspects of the tool itself. To complete the handover the new intern will need to
deal with data sets from the origins and provide a fully functional / up loadable file. Business Objects is a working process and the new intern has
grasped the key aspects such as the layers to reports and how to update to BO from the IDT. To complete the handover the new intern will need
exposure to the reports more and to understand the data itself. I believe I have helped the new intern as much as I can and have tried to allow
them the freedom to explore and practice.
Spencer quickly absorbed the learning from the
handover providing a good level of support straight
away. He has built strong relationships with the
business teams allowing him to continue this level of
support throughout his placement.
Spencer’s has provided excellent levels of support for
Nielsen ending his placement with a successful
handover to the Infosys team
Spencer has owned the Cocoa life project this year,
showing excellent leadership and team working skills to
successfully deliver phase 3 of the project and provide
continued high levels of support for the system,
receiving consistently positive feedback from the
business team.
During his work on SharePoint and Nintex Spencer has
shown a great ability at learning on the fly and standing
alone, researching solutions to problems with very little
support and producing great results. He showed the
extent of his knowledge by providing a successful
transition to the infosys support team.
Business Objects is another example of Spencer’s drive
to learn new things and his skill at quickly getting to
grips with new technologies. He has been invaluable in
the continuing development of business objects allowing
us to deliver reporting solutions that wouldn’t have been
possible without his help.
During the Handover to the new intern Spencer has
shown his expertise in the areas he has developed
creating and delivering a detailed handover plan with no
support.
The How:
Performance
against values
2 Strengths
Stand alone – I believe I have been independent with my work and not relied on my manager to assist me constantly, however I have appreciated
when help is required. Frequently queries and issues would occur which required thought to find a solution. Rather than giving up and asking for
help I believe I have stood alone to and tried to find the solution myself. An example of this scenario would be Sharepoint, users would highlight a
technical issue and I would then investigate independently to try and find the solution
keep it simple – I believe I have made my work simple for end users to understand and make my work user friendly. I have tried to implement a
simple solution to every situation, an example of this would be the documentation I have handed out to certain users of various systems. I have
provided several manuals to perform tasks associated with the maintenance of some systems.
2 Development Opportunities
Decide Deliver – my ability to discuss at length the possibilities to an issue could improve as I sometimes do not thoroughly explain myself as I
presume others have knowledge on the subject. This is an aspect I can improve by simply offering clarity in my descriptions and thinking of to
whom I'm contacting and their knowledge on the subject.
Deadlines – I have the tendency to presume a task wont take long to complete, this can be due to simply underestimating the challenge or not
considering other commitments. i can improve this by overestimating tasks and giving myself (and sometimes others) extra time in case of these
situations allowing for a more realistic and achievable deadline.
Spencer has consistently shown his ability to Stand
alone throughout his placement. From the beginning he
has not been afraid to do his own research to find
solutions to problems and has shown his ability to Act
like and Owner by taking responsibility for the systems
he looks after with limited support. He has also
consistently kept it simple, looking for least complicated
solution to a number of difficult issues.
I have no doubt that with more experience Spencer will
deliver on these development opportunities and turn
them into strengths.
3. Reflection of placement
learning
Summary of end-of-placement review discussion
Key learning during
placement : Knowledge and
skills
SQL Navigator / server – enhanced my understanding of the business structure from a data perspective and skills
within the software. SQL server became a vital asset to my arsenal as several excel tools connect to the servers.
Organisational functions and process – how a large company is co-ordinated and work with sales/ process of
sales.
Project work – from the vast exposure to project based work I have learned better ways to manage a project and
how to meet targets. Timelines are a critical part of a project and aligning teams / individuals is key. The cocoa life
project has opened my eyes to the fundamentals to a projects capabilities and how to get all areas to engage and
work together.
BO - business objects has allowed me to comprehend how departments use key data to drive their report and
how they operate. It has given me the opportunity to use my understanding of relational databases and how to
construct a universe
Spencer has shown multiple times this year that he can
quickly pick up and use new technologies such as SQL and
Business Objects. Quickly developing his skills in these areas
to become proficient and produce some excellent results.
This can be seen in the SharePoint and Business Objects
work.
He has also shown his ability to work with Business teams
and third parties to plan and deliver projects. The best
example is his delivery of the Cocoa Life Phase 3 project.
Learning during placement:
Areas of strength (using
Values / Leadership
competencies / Learning
Agility)
Act like an owner – I have not used my temporary fixture to hinder my work or limit my involvement.
Standing Alone – I have used my own resources to find solutions to issues regarding my responsibilities, rather
than using my managers time and knowledge. I have not hesitated to dive into work and “get stuck in” rather
than consistently asking for guidance
Throughout his placement year Spencer has consistently
shown his ability to Stand Alone and Act like an owner. He
has supported and developed the application under his
care with very little support to a very high level.
Learning during placement:
Areas needing
development (using Values
/ Leadership competencies
/ Learning agility)
Confronting – to confront challenges in a better mind-set and try to face the challenge head on rather then leave
issues to settle/ fester.
Business acumen – knowing business functions is important to all employees, this is something I should spend
more time on and involve myself ore in the understanding of functions within the business and the processes
related.
Spencer will quickly improve on both these development
opportunities with further experience.
