Micro-analysis –Sherlock
The opening scene commences with an establishing shot, which is a close up of a
man, presumable the main character and the protagonist, whom is wearing a smart
black coat which suggests that the is intelligent and middle class, the use of the collar
being up, suggests a sense of mystery and braveness, when it is a close up, it allows
the audience to see and identify his expression.
The sound used begins strait from the beginning of the opening scene which gradually
becomes more tense to set the scene, the music is non-diegetic in order to create a
particular atmosphere.
Furthermore it displays a slow panning shot, which allows the audience to follow his
movements, strait away, I can identify that he is looking at something on the wall, as
the panning shot allows us to do so. This leads the audience then to examine the wall
to identify whatever he is looking at.
However there is a series of quick cuts which have been edited, these quick cuts
create a sense of tension as a quick shot is fast and creates adrenalin, for the
audience, as something is happening and happening fast, The quick shots identifie an
extreme close up of the wall ,this lets the audience know that whatever he is looking
at it important ,you can additionally identify this because there is a chip in the wall,
but around the chip is blurred out whilst this shot is being taken. The camera is also
being zoomed in, this helps the audience identify the chip and only focus on the chip
as that is also what is focused in the shot . Therefore displaying that this chip in the
wall is vital and signifiquent in this scene.
After the audience have seen the chip, there is a again another quick cut but
returning to a similar shot which again displays the man looking at the wall again a
panning shot, this creates tension and makes the audience wonder and presume that
he is figuring stuff out, by shot double taking something makes the audience think
that it is important as he is giving great attention to it.
However after he looks at the wall, it again displays the wall, however this time at a
different angle, focus and different lighting, the lighting now being very dark. This
creates an eerie atmosphere as the use of low key lighting creates a sense of danger
and worry, it makes the audience think he is having a flash back ,as it displays
someone scratching the wall, which links back to the chip on the wall ,this person
presumably an old person(by looking at the wrinkles on her hand) which creates the
idea of an investigation, this quickly cuts back to the man, again an extreme close up
,which confirms this idea of an investigation as these quick shots back and forth cause
a sense of fear and by their camera shot reverse shotting back to the hand suggests
that he is concerned.
The camera then turns to a mid-shot and low angle of a lady being dragged up the
stairs ,but again in this different lighting, which is signifiquent as the different lighting
further confirms the idea of the a flash back scene at a different time of day. The high
angle shot additionally helps the audience in order to clearly see that the lady is being
dragged up the stairs, furthermore, displays a close up of her face which displays huge
amounts of devastation.
Rachel O’Riordan
By her outfit I can identify that she is wearing normal clothes, a green cardigan and
top. Warm nice colours, rather than dark clothes which would suggest a criminal. She
is additionally not wearing work clothes which suggests she was just relaxing at home
and is a normal working class women as she is not extremely dress up or dressed
down. However there the three men standing around her. And two dragging her up
the stairs which are both dressed in black, this suggests that they are criminals and
black outfits portray the idea of crime and danger, which links to what they are doing,
dragging someone up the stairs. However there is one man whom is not carrying her
or doing any work, he is standing ahead of them which suggests that he is leading this
activity ,in addition that he is in charge as he is not helping ,he is simply watching
which suggests that he may be the antagonist.
This shot of the lady on the stairs then changes to a slow motion shot ,this has been
edited, which makes the audience really focus on what is happening the use of slow
motion also helps when creating a sense of mystery and fear. It slows down the
expressions on her face you can clearly identify that she is in desperation and distress.
The sound used is dramatic tense and non diegetic music which has gradually been
builded up, however you can hear diegetic sounds such as the lady shouting ‘sherlock’
in a distressed voice ,which leads the audience believe that she is shouting for this
pro-agonist.
The camera Turns back to the protagonist, this is a close up again, which is gradually
zooming in with a wide angle lens. he is looking up, which suggests that they are the
stairs he envisioned of the lady in the flash back, The zooming in has been done to
show immense determination and concern on his face.
Once he has gone up the stairs, there is another establishing shot, as a new scene has
been introduced, this new scene is being introduced via a tracking shot, to display to
the audience the new environment, which displays a rather grand room which looks
slightly antique not a modern day home which backs up the question of it being the
old lady’s home. And shows the actors in the scene, the lady and the three men who
have been holding her captive, I can identify this because she is sitting down and a
side wide angle view has been used in order to display the gun that is being help to
her head. The lighting used is rather dull and dark which emphasis the antique ness of
the house.
Extreme close up
An extreme close up has been used when Sherlock lifts up the cardigan of the elderly
lady this close up was used in order for Sherlock and the viewers to see exactly what
he is looking at and the close up further displays the extent of the wound in detail for
the Sherlock to identify the damage that the two men had made, in addition this
extreme close up is in high key lighting for the audience to have a clear and visible
shot of the wound without it being dark. The mise en scene used is that the
background is completely blurred out, this is further more to emphasise the wound
and for there to be no distractions
Rachel O’Riordan
Over the shoulder
An over the shoulder shot has been used when Sherlock is talking to the man. This has
been used to display a conversation that each men are looking at each over. This
additionally changes to a shot reverse shot, which has been used to display the back
and forth of the conversation and the expressions on the characters face .As you see
from the over the shoulder shot Sherlock is very serious. The sound sued is diegetic
and he is not smiling and is talking in a very calm and focused voice
Point of view shot
A point of view shot, has been used when Sherlock is analysing the man and the
elderly lady, when he is looking at the lady. It then zooms in on each detail for
example the blood stain on the ring and the wound on her cheek, the use of the point
of view shot and zoom, helps really see the details through his eyes. The zoom really
helps the audience only to focus on the wound for example the cut on her cheek.
the background was blurred out and the cuts and blood were used in high key
lighting, for a clear image and for audience to easily identify the wounds.
however the lighting used was slightly different to the normal lighting that we had
previously seen as it has blue undertones, that has been done in order for audience to
identify that, that this is the image that Sherlock is seeing and it is through his eyes,
which further backs up of the previous point of him making an investigation. The
sound additionally starts as soon as the zooming begins and the non diagetic music
creates tension and emphasis the idea of an investigation and a crime scene the
music is quick much like the shot to display how fast Sherlock is thinking and analysing
them
Once the point of view shot changes to the man, dialogue had been used on top of
the character. Still in a point of a view shot and using a close up. The dialogue has
been used to again emphasise Sherlock’s way of thinking he doesn’t just simply see a
human he analysis every fine detail on him for example his skull, lungs etc., again in
this different lighting to display that Sherlock doesn’t view things like a regular
human.
By Sherlock going up to the elderly lady in front of the man it displays that he is not
scared nor intimidated by him. Showing that he must be quite a powerful person.
A Wide angle shot has been used once Sherlock has analysed the two characters, the
wide angle shot had been used in order to display to the audience his surroundings.
That Sherlock is a strong independent individual as he is facing this man on this own,
with no weapons to help him
Mid shot, had been used when Sherlock was getting patted down, this has been used
to display the expression on his and his body language when he was getting patted
down. He looked reasonably calm considering he was at gun point and was not
shaking or display any sign of fear, additionally by allowing him to pat him down
displays that he is self-aware that he doesn’t have any weapons in addition by him not
having any displays that he does not rely on guns to defend himself as he is strong in
his mind
Rachel O’Riordan
A Close up was used strait after the mid shot, once he had gotten the spray out his
pocket, from a side angle. This is effective as when he proceeds to head but the man
the shots change from different angles this was effective to display how powerful and
quick the head butt was, For example it also went to an over the shoulder shot, back
to a close up, this was very effective as quick shots create adrenalin and speed which
has been edited to make the head seem smooth and powerful
Once the head butt had been completed the shot changes to a Long shot to display to
the audience the damage that Sherlock has caused. The man (antagonist), is laying
down on the sofa backwards, this displays that it was very strong as the it caused him
to fall back, he is additionally not moving therefore it may have caused him to
become unconscious which additionally displays how powerful Sherlock is,
furthermore his hands are out display that he may have surrendered and that he had
been defeated
Changing focus shot, has been used to display Sherlock’s face, as it blurs out the
elderly lady’s face, this has been used to show the expression on Sherlock’s face to
display how brave he is and un-faced by what he has just done to the antagonist
New establishing shot has now been used to display a change of scene, with a wide
angle lens, this image is in high key lighting as they are outdoors in what seems to be
mid-day as it is bright outside. Non diegetic music has been sued to display that this
new character is in a good mood and is unaware of the horror happening. As the
music sounds very peaceful and happy and played with a guitar. This music has been
used to contrast the two different moods in this scene and display to the audience
that this character is un-aware what is happening. However you can still hear the
diegetic sounds like when the car pulled up and when he got out and opened it but
the background music has been used to introduce to mood of the scene and then
man
In addition this character is wearing rather normal clothing which displays that is he is
not one of the antagonists as he is not in a black suit ,he is just dressed like a regular
guy can identify this from the long shot used dressed in khaki trousers and a brown
jacket
An extreme close up is what this scene ends with of a note on the wall reading ‘crime
in progress please disturb’ this displays to the audience that Sherlock already knew
what was happening before he even walked in
The non-diegetic music stopped for a bit in order for the audience to read the note
however slowly starts back again
