Michel Gondy is known for directing music videos in long single takes that follow the artist through a cycle. In his video for Kylie Minogue's "Come Into My World," Kylie walks along a street dropping a dry cleaning tag and picking it up again, with something different going wrong in the background each time. The video creates a looping effect. Gondy also directs the Living Sisters video "How Are You Doing" using miniature sets to depict events like a bus crashing off a bridge in a clever and cost-effective way. 2. Come Into My World - Kylie
Minogue (2002)
Michel’s direction of this music video shows Kylie coming out of a dry
cleaners and dropping a tag onto the floor. She then walks along a
street where in the background something different is constantly
going wrong, the scene is full of people.
The take looks as though it has been taken in one take, this is similar
to Michel’s direction of ‘Love Letters’ where he does the whole music
video in one take. The music video goes on in a cycle as Kylie
continues to get back to the dry cleaners and picks up her tag, as she
does this another kylie comes out, very clever. The scene gets bigger
and bigger with more people coming out.
I found it a very clever way of producing a music video and thought it
must have taken ages to get each long take right.

3. How are you doing? – Living Sisters
In this Music video the screen is split into three videos
each of the three sisters. This sisters are all going through
some tough situation whilst they are on the phone to each
other, however when they are on the phone to each other
they say they are fine and nothing much is happening,
contradicting what they are doing.
In the video Michel uses fake miniature sets of where he
girls are, for example at one point a orange bus crashes as
a bridge does, Michel shows this via a obvious model
falling, clever. It then cuts to the girl in the bus coming out
the window, skipping any videos of the sister cashing it.
Clever and cost effective.
I liked this music video as it was different and showed
more skills that Michel had and was able to portray.

4. Mia Doi Todd - Open Your Heart
In ‘Open your heart’ Michel directs the actors almost exactly in time
with the music, right at the start we see a shot of 4 dancer's tapping
the hand rail in time with the beat, they almost create the beat. This is
similar to the chemical brothers which Michel also directed where he
gets the actors to lift the poles in time with music.
He goes on to show all the actors in
coloured t-shirts, the colors either link
with the main colour behind them or
completely contrast them. This was to link
with the lyrics about being different.
I found this very interesting but again very hard direct that amount of
people all in time. This being said it was clear at points that separate
actors where they were out of time.
