2. BLACK.1 1
We hear a piece of meditative music.
INT. TRAIN CAR - DAY2 2
A Manhattan bound J train makes it’s way forward on the
WILLIAMSBURG BRIDGE; the city skyline slowly emerging in the
distance.
MIMI (V.O.)
Breathe... breathe... softly...
softly...
A CELLPHONE rings...
MIMI (V.O.)
Ignore it... ignore it and
breathe... 1... 2... 3 and out 1...
2... 3... and in...
FADE IN
INT. APARTMENT/BROOKLYN - DAY3 3
In a bohemian style apartment we find two people, a YOUNG MAN
and WOMAN. The woman, MIMI(25), is hunched over the man,
PAUL(27).
PAUL lays flat with his back to the ground, whilst MIMI sits
by his head, gentle rubbing his temple.
MIMI
...softly... slowly... and
CELLPHONE rings again O.S, the incessant sound wins over.
PAUL opens his eyes, springs up, searches for his phone;
MIMI (CONT’D)
(overlapping)
I thought you turned it off!
PAUL
(overlapping)
I did!
MIMI
(overlapping)
Fuck!
3. PAUL
(overlapping)
My bad... my mad...
Finds it;
PAUL (CONT’D)
(into receiever)
Aaayyyy babay!
MIMI gets up, walks O.S. Meditative music cuts off,
completely killing off the energy in the room.
PAUL (CONT’D)
(to MIMI)
It’s Sam.
LOUD music can be heard over the phone.
PAUL (CONT’D)
Ay! Ay, Sam, I ca...
(listens)
O.k, o.k...
PAUL, on hold, watches MIMI as she moves away from the IPOD-
SPEAKER looking device.
She makes her way through a pair of beaded curtains into an
ALCOVE by the side of the room.
PAUL (CONT’D)
Yeah, I can hear you now. Was’
good?
(listens)
Soho? The fuck I wanna do in Soho?
Sam... Sam, I’m not coming...
MIMI, makes her way out of the ALCOVE to the WINDOW.
She lights a JOINT.
PAUL watches her, signals; “Just a minute.”
PAUL (CONT’D)
(listens)
No she’s not!
(listens)
You’re fuckin’ with me right?
(listens, laughs)
Aright, put her on then.
MIMI, takes a puff.
2.
4. PAUL (CONT’D)
(adjusts his voice, then)
Hey...
(listen, flirtatiously)
Well you shoulda’ sent me an
invite! It’s not my fault I'm not
there!
(listens, then)
What time?
(looks over at MIMI)
Yeah, I guess I can do that.
(listen, smiles)
Ok.
He chuckles, hangs up the phone.
BEAT.
He gets up off the floor, walks to the window where MIMI
stands.
PAUL (CONT’D)
Sorry...
(pause)
That was good though right, what
was that, a good five minutes?
She takes a puff... slowly blows it out;
PAUL (CONT’D)
Ay, don’t hold out on me.
MIMI
(passes joint)
You know what I think Paul?
PAUL
(takes a hit)
What?
MIMI
(let’s him have it)
You’re a fucking bullshitter!
PAUL
(blows out smoke)
Hey, that’s not fair!
MIMI
Why the fuck not?!
3.
5. PAUL
(smirking)
What are you so mad for, it’s not
like we can’t start over?!
MIMI
Start over?! Nigga you outcho mind.
PAUL
(passes joint)
C’mon...
MIMI
...lemme tell you something. As
usual, you’re gonna go out there,
get yourself mixed up in a buncha’
shit and you’re not gonna know what
to do and then you’re gonna come
crying to me; “Mimi, I don’t know
what to do! Mimi, I don’t know what
to do!”
(pause)
You laugh but you know I’m right.
BEAT
He acknowledges the truth of her statement. He takes a puff.
PAUL
Start over?
MIMI
Nope.
PAUL
(turns on the charm)
Pretty pleaseeeee...
MIMI
...No...
PAUL
...with a cherry on top!
PAUSE.
She looks at him, smiles.
MIMI
I could kill you.
PAUL
I know.
4.
6. MIMI
Turn off your phone.
PAUL
(shows it to her)
Off.
She walks away from the window back to the floor.
MIMI
(invites him over)
C’mon! I don’t have all day...
He puts out the joint, moves away from the window, takes a
seat on the floor.
MIMI (CONT’D)
(overlapping)
Stop smiling...
PAUL
(overlapping)
Man, Wheredju get that weed though?
MIMI
Shut up, close your eyes.
She presses “START” on the IPOD, music comes alive.
MIMI (CONT’D)
Relax your shoulders...
He does as she says.
MIMI (CONT’D)
I want you to remain where you are
now, be present in your body and in
this moment.
The MUSIC has a more etherial quality to it now.
His shoulders begin to loosen up; the muscles in his face
become softer. He breathes freely now.
MIMI (CONT’D)
Continue to breathe, softly, each
time taking yourself back. Way back
to a moment you felt the most
happiest. Remember the feeling!
EXT. MANHATTAN - DAY4 4
Somewhere in Manhattan.
5.
7. MIMI’s voice, with the music carries over.
In slow-motion PAUL, makes his way into frame. He walks,
skipping around like a little boy would. He is happy.
MIMI
(V.O)
Remember how much laughter there
was; how life was so full of
promise!
MIMI, also makes her way into frame. She too is ecstatic.
MIMI (CONT’D)
Now remember how innocent
everything was and how you knew
always, always that anything you
imagined was possible...
In both their hands are WATER-PISTOLS, from which bubbles
come out of when shot. They shoot at each other.
In their boundless joy, it is as if they’re connected to all
those who too have walked the streets of NEW YORK; the Jazz
men, Madison Ave types, the artists, the outsiders, the
tourists, the panhandlers, winos, the theatre district
types...
The students with their fancy phones, the fresh off the bus,
the execs, the garbage men, the hustlers, the old-timers
playing dominos, the natives with their Yankee caps, the
cabbies, the West-African imports...
Wee see Chinatown, Little Italy, L.E.S, the WASPS, the
gentrifiers, the fashion industry types, the weed-smokers,
the dealers, the Afro-Punks, the once who almost made it and
that once who never made it at all.
New Years eve, the J’ourvre parade, the police, the sirens,
Summer, Winter, Central Park, the roaring 20’s, the 70’s and
the 80’s...
The knife fights, the dancing in the streets, Time Square,
Hip-Hop, Bebop, Film, Art, Warhol, Basquiat, the rain, the
wind, the cold, the heat, lovers kissing in the streets, and
then;
MUSIC CUT OFF
