The Titanic set sail from Southampton, England on April 10, 1912 carrying 2,207 people bound for New York. Despite receiving several warnings about icebergs, on April 14th it collided with an iceberg, resulting in a 300-foot gash along its side. Water rushed into the ship at 7 tons per second, and within 3 hours the "unsinkable" Titanic sank, resulting in the deaths of 1,500 people. To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the sinking, a memorial cruise will set sail from Southampton on April 8, 2012 to visit the spot where the Titanic went down.
