Week 1 Discussion 2
Protecting Patients
• Employees in a health care
  setting have access to patient
  records and sensitive
  information on those patients
• It is important to safeguard
  this information
• Employees need to be aware of
what is acceptable and what is
  not acceptable use of the
  information they have access
  to.
• They need to be aware of
  HIPAA and privacy laws, as
  well as consequences for
  violation
VIP Patient Records
• VIP patients, or celebrity
  patients need to ensure their
  information is protected just
  as any other patient.
• The information contained in
  their records could be used
  against them or affect their
  careers because of the public
  nature of their careers.
• Many people are interested in
  obtaining this information.
• It is very important that it is
  not compromised.
Training
           • Employees need additional
             training on securing
             information and not passing it
             along.
           • Employees should be aware of
             all standard HIPAA laws and
             company policies
           • In addition, employees should
             understand how violating the
             laws could affect them
           • Instilling this message should
             be a frequent occurance.
Training Program
• Employees should be trained
  twice per year on privacy
• This training should be
  interactive so questions can be
  asked.
• Employees should get to know
  the laws and understand that
  they should not access charts
  unless they are authorized to
  do so.
Consequences
               • Consequences should be
                 established and emphasized.
               • Losing one’s job, fines, and jail
                 time are all possible outcomes
                 for breaking the law.
               • There should also be a help
line in case someone wants to
                 report violations.
               • This should help employees
                 remember how important it is
                 not to violate laws.
