The Geography of the
Americas
SWBAT
• Analyze physical features of the Americas,
including rivers, mountain ranges and
climate
• Give details about the geography of the
Andes
• Locate Mesoamerica and list details about
its geographical features.
Physical Geography of the
Americas
• North and South
America connected
• Isthmus – A narrow
land bridge that
connects two large
pieces of land
Landforms and Rivers
• Mountains in the West
– North America – Rocky
Mountains
– South America – Andes
Mountains
• River Systems
– North America –
Mississippi River
– South America – Amazon
and Parana Rivers
Climates
• North America is North of
Equator and South
America is South of
Equator
• When one is summer the
other is winter… vice
versa
• Most of South America
receives a lot of rainfall
• Over half the continent is
warm and rainy – tropical
zones…
• Especially Central
America
Geography in the Andes
• Tall Peaks
– The Andes peaks are
the highest in the
Americas
– Many over 20,000 feet
– Plate movement
causes a lot of
volcanic activity and
earthquakes
– Rain unpredictable
and soil is poor
Geography in the Andes Cont.
• High Plateaus
– An area between the
mountains filled with
hills, valleys, plains,
and deserts
– Farming a problem
because of
unpredictable weather
– For water people had
to depend on irrigation
Geography of Mesoamerica
• Mesoamerica –
civilizations in
Northern America
including southern
Mexico and Central
American countries of
Guatemala, El
Salvador, Belize and
parts of Honduras
and Nicaragua.
Land of Mesoamerica
• Two Main Regions –
highlands and lowlands
• Tropical Lowlands hug
the Gulf of Mexico
• Yucatan Peninsula lies
between the Gulf of
Mexico and the
Caribbean Sea.
• Highlands stretch
between the mountains of
the Sierra Madre
mountain system
Climate
• Can rain almost 100
inches a year in the
lowlands providing a
good environment for
growing crops
• In highlands it rains less
and air is cooler and drier
• Farming to deal with both
climates
– Dry highlands – irrigation
– Lowlands – Slash and Burn
agriculture; clearing a
patch of jungle by cutting
back and burning it.
