Memorial Day originated as Decoration Day after the Civil War to honor Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the war. Multiple towns claim to be the origin, but Waterloo, NY was officially declared the birthplace. While some see it as a day to honor all dead, Memorial Day is intended specifically for those who died serving in the military.
