Thomas Alva Edison invented the electric light bulb on October 21, 1879, creating the first practical incandescent light that could be used on a widespread basis. Edison developed an improved electric lighting system including a long-lasting, inexpensive bulb that could be powered by direct current electricity. The light bulb has since been widely adopted around the world for lighting homes, businesses and public spaces.
