King George III was the King of Great Britain and Ireland from 1760 until his death in 1820. He is best known for losing the American colonies as they declared independence during the American Revolutionary War. George III suffered from a serious mental illness known today as porphyria, which caused him bouts of insanity and eventually permanent mental incapacity in his later years.
