INTRODUCTION
This past year has been like no other. At the
beginning of the financial year, when we
embarked on bringing the East and West
Medilinks together into ‘Medilink Midlands’,
we were mindful of the challenges posed
and were determined to maintain a proactive
and excellent service to all of our members.
Looking back over the year, government restrictions
have caused us all to adapt the way we work, to maintain
the health and safety of staff while ensuring business
sustainability. I am so proud to say that the staff of
Medilink Midlands, led by the Chief Executive and my
fellow board members, have worked tirelessly to ensure
that good service delivery was maintained throughout.
Despite the pandemic bringing extraordinary changes
to our operations, we have produced a steady financial
performance throughout, confirming the resilience of our
organisation. This gives us a great platform to continue
to deliver a high-quality service for our members and we
remain true to our core values. Medilink Midlands is a
cornerstone of the life sciences sector.
Supporting a growing regional life science base means
we must also consider the economy. Going forward we
want to ensure that our plans and partnerships with key
stakeholders have the Midlands’s capabilities, skills, and
people at the heart of them.
The pandemic has re-defined our society. Government,
institutions and all major stakeholders have to now re-
examine how we go forward and recalibrate
our vision of what our society should be in
the future.
I am confident that we will succeed by
working together and supporting each
other. Covid-19 has been a tragedy for
so many organisations in the UK and
the wider world, but to’ build back
better’ we must collectively ensure
that ‘levelling up’ is not just a
meaningless phrase but a dynamic
opportunity realised by all.

THE CITY OF MENTOR, OHIO
MIDLANDS IN FOCUS
Medilink Midlands has been involved in a number of
strategic activities throughout the past year alongside
the Midlands Engine, to help promote the Midlands
region as a great place to do business. Medilink
Midlands Directors Mike Hannay and Charles De Rohan
sit on the Midlands Engine Health Board along with
Medilink Midlands Chief Executive Darren Clark, to
help shape the strategic direction of Midlands Engine
Health and ensure that the industries voice is heard.
To this end, Medilink Midlands supported and
chaired their first industry roundtable event, which
gave delegates the opportunity to share industry
perspectives on the challenges, barriers and
opportunities for the life sciences sector in the
Midlands. Medilink Midlands utilised its extensive
network to ensure that a substantial number of life
science businesses, of various specialisms and sizes,
were able to attend. This gave the event an industry
focus which helped to inform Midlands Engine’s
future operations and efforts. As a key bridge between
government and Industry, Medilink Midlands assistance
in this event was crucial to its success.
Medilink Midlands supported the Midlands Engine
Economic Observatory (MEEO) in a study entitled
‘Research to strengthen the resilience of health and
life science manufacturing in the Midlands’. This was
done to inform policy
development of the
Midlands Engine
team to see what
can be done, or put in place to support life science
companies in the future. Medilink Midlands identified
key companies from across the sector and put them
in touch with the Midlands Engine research team.
Interviews and appointments were arranged, and the
MEEO team received crucial industry insight into its
research, which may not have happened so quickly,
without Medilink Midlands assistance.
MI Health (MIH) commissioned an assessment of
the nature and scale of the Med-Tech sector in the
Midlands, what Med-Tech businesses in the Midlands
need and the barriers they face. Medilink Midlands was
a key partner in the creation of this report, alongside
the East and West Midlands Academic Health Science
Networks. The findings from this assessment will
support the development of the Medical Technologies
Innovation Accelerator and help MIH and its regional
partners to better understand how they can support
the sector in the future. Medilink Midlands has also
recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with
the West Midlands Health and Technology Cluster to
help further align our activity in support of the sector
across the region.
MIDLANDS ENGINE
Medilink Midlands has collaborated with its network to help deliver a number
of regional initiatives and projects:
Medilink Midlands and the City
of Mentor announced a strategic
collaboration to promote bilateral
trade and investment between the
Midlands and Northeast Ohio, USA
in August 2018. Since that time, both
Medilink Midlands and the City of
Mentor have travelled to and from the
UK and the US, to build relationships, trade networks,
and business collaborations. Northeast Ohio has a lot of
opportunities for UK life science companies looking to
make inroads into the American market. Manufacturing
costs are low, the region has a stable and experienced
workforce, has an excellent transport and distribution
infrastructure and the local government is pro-business
and committed to ensuring the continued economic
success of the city.
Northeast Ohio is also home to internationally recognised
clinical research institutions, including the prestigious
Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals and Case Western
Reserve University, providing North East Ohio biomedical
and med-tech companies with a world-class platform for
research, design, and innovation. These trade missions
between the City of Mentor and Medilink Midlands have
already resulted in success as Medilink Midlands Member
Uvamed Ltd has set up a US office in Mentor, having
attended the first Medilink Midlands trade mission and
conference on innovation in 2018.
As a result of the ongoing and growing relationship
between Medilink Midlands and the City of Mentor, it is
hoped that more UK companies will establish themselves
in Mentor, and that Mentor companies will establish
themselves in the Midlands. As recently as October 2021,
a delegation from Mentor visited the UK to attend the Med
Tech Innovation (MTI) Expo and
Conference, and 13 companies
with American aspirations met
with the Mentor delegation.

Annual Report 2021
DRIVING LIFE
SCIENCES
BUSINESSES
As part of our work with
government, Medilink
Midlands worked with the
Department for International
Trade to develop a report which outlined the
Midlands prospects for foreign direct investment.
This covered a wide range of areas, including
existing business success stories, life science
business space, the Midlands capacity for contract
research and our unique position as a national
centre for defence medicine.
MIDLANDS INNOVATION HEALTH
Medilink Midlands also works closely with Midlands
Innovation Health (MI Health). MI Health coordinates and
combines the collective excellence of seven Midlands
Innovation universities to deliver improved health and
regional growth. Medilink Midlands also delivered the
Midlands Health and Life Science Symposium in late
November 2021, on behalf of MI Health.
The Midlands Health and Life Science Symposium shone a light on the powerhouse of Health and Life
Sciences research strength that is in the Midlands, as well as the role it can play in supporting the delivery of
national innovation policies and the achievement through the place agenda and adoption/innovation within the
NHS. The incredible collaborations that delivered over £53 million of cutting-edge research in the fight against
COVID-19 brought together academic, business and clinical experts, alongside civic and regional leaders
from the Midlands and beyond to highlight what the region has to offer and to explore how excellence can be
harnessed to address global healthcare challenges for increased wellbeing and productivity. Over 200 key
people from across the region attended the event.
MED-TECH
INNOVATION EXPO
Rapid News Ltd and Medilink UK
have collaborated successfully
on the Med-Tech Innovation Expo
since 2016, when Rapid took on the annual event.
The cooperation agreement between the two
organisations covers a broad sweep of initiatives
including marketing, conference production, show
floor presence for both Medilink and its members,
membership development and the production
of the annual Medilink UK Healthcare Business
Awards.
The depth of the partnership demonstrates that
both organisations are committed to working
together to ensure that the event remains the
premier gathering for MedTech, medical plastics,
digital devices and pharmaceutical manufacturing
technology businesses in the UK.
MAKE UK
Medilink Midlands
and Make UK - the
representative body
for UK manufacturing,
identified a mutually beneficial opportunity to work
together in June 2021. The two organisations wanted to
ensure that members of both parties have access to the
best possible information, services and support, to deliver
the best possible environment for UK manufacturing.
Thanks to the newly founded partnership, Medilink
Midlands members can now enjoy access to Make UK
information and resources, including market intelligence
and practical solutions to market needs and access to
Make UK member events.
Medilink Midlands is committed to working alongside
Make UK to improve the image of manufacturing, and to
create a favourable environment for manufacturing, at a
local, regional, national and EU level.
THE BIG ASK
During the pandemic, Medilink Midlands were made
aware of critical shortages
such as PPE, raw materials,
goods, skills services. In
response to this, Medilink
Midlands worked with the West
and East Midlands Academic
Health Science Networks to coordinate the region’s
industrial activities and responses. Over 100 companies
responded and over 110 offers of support were made,
offering a wide array of products and services. After
the initial wave of support from life science companies,
Medilink Midlands was able to develop a free Find it/
Source it service, utilising its extensive network to
respond to company requests for support, services and
products. Medilink Midlands then connected businesses
in its region with each other, and wider national entities
and organisations where appropriate.

SUPPORT PROJECTS
Medilink Midlands helps life science companies to form partnerships, develop new
products and services and share ideas, through our innovation business support
projects.
In the East Midlands, three projects, INSTILS, SolSTICE ACTIS, are part-funded by the
European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and provide innovation support to SMEs in
specific geographic areas.
In addition, an East Midlands wide programme is delivered for the East Midlands
Academic Health Science Network (EMAHSN) to support their industry engagement
activities.
In the West Midlands, Medilink West Midlands delivers the Industry Innovation Gateway
Service for the West Midlands Academic Health Science Network (WMAHSN). This
includes Meridian, which is WHAHSN’s interactive online innovation health exchange,
designed to support the West Midlands innovation ecosystem.
INSTILS, SoLSTICE and ACTIS
Through the INSTILS, SoLSTICE and ACTIS projects, companies are supported to fast-
track their innovations, overcome innovation barriers, and speed up the development of
novel technologies and services, bringing their ideas to market faster. This is delivered
through a number of different means.

NuVision® Biotherapies is a regenerative
medicine company which develops biotherapies
for treating ‘front-of-the-eye’ disease, trauma
and broader wound care. Having received support
from Medilink EM before, through the previous
ERDF-funded iNet project, NuVision Biotherapies
was able to launch Omnigen® - a unique
transportable biological matrix that is used as
an effective regenerative therapy for a range of
wound care indications, including ocular surface
disease. Omnigen is supplied dry and contains no
viable cells. It may be stored at room temperature
and is ready to use straight from the sterile pack.
NuVision wanted to expand the use of their
product to facilitate the treatment of diabetic foot
ulcers. To do this, NuVision’s Omnigen would
need to go through a proof-of-concept clinical
trial, as part of the product’s development. The
INSTILS Adviser connected NuVision with the
EMAHSN, who were able to help facilitate this.
The project is now in its final stages and the
resulting data has further enabled NuVision
to secure a further £1.8 million of investment
from the Midlands Engine Investment Proof
of Concept and Early Stage Fund, to continue
the development of Omnigen into new ocular
indications that will enable treatment of dry eye
and eye wounds in and out of clinic.
“The INSTILS support has been mission critical
giving new data, opening up new pathways and
pilot trials that we would not have reached
without the support. Every other option open
to us would not have produced the critical data
required.”
Andrew Hopkinson, COO NuVision Biotherapies.

OCB Media develops training videos, free
browser-based utilities and commercial
applications for medical and research
organisations. The company has an internally
developed Learning Management System, version
5, which was successfully released in August
2018. The system was originally provided to
medical students, to deliver training and learning
resources for the healthcare industry, and OCB
wanted to roll it out to the NHS on a national
scale.
Thanks to SoLSTICE support, OCB has now
formed a new collaboration to help develop its
new and improved e-learning tools for the NHS.
This allowed them to advance their idea in a much
faster and more efficient way than would have
otherwise been possible.
Since the release of the updated learning
modules in November 2018, over 21,000 NHS
staff have now registered with the free resource.
In addition, an increasing number of NHS Trusts
are acquiring the learning modules for use on
their own learning management systems or the
National Learning Management System.
Following this, the OCB SCRIPT Nursing
e-learning portfolio has been updated to align
with the NMC’s ‘Standards of proficiency for
registered nurses.’ All modules have been
authored by specialist healthcare professionals
and have been externally peer-reviewed to ensure
accuracy.
A recent study by the British Medical Journal
shows that usage of OCB NEWS software
substantially reduces false alerts for patients with
COPD.

Life Science Group (LSG), one of the UK’s leading
suppliers of life science manufacturing and
research solutions, approached Medilink EM for
support with developing CellShip®, a unique
medium that allows cells to be transported
without the need for dry ice, or for the cells to be
fully frozen and stored in liquid nitrogen with the
issues for transport that this produces.
Innovation advisors worked with Life Science
Group to obtain an SNG grant for the company to
attend an online cell culture conference (Best-of
Biotherapeutics Analytical Summit: Cell Gene
Therapy Analytics) and have recently had approval
for a £57,000 ACTIS ISG grant supported project
towards development of a GMP/GLP cleanroom
to enable the company to further investigate and
develop their innovative CellShip® product.
The company has also benefited from discounted
marketing support from Agora Marketing
Communications. This has enabled the Life
Science Group to proactively plan for the future
and begin to implement a number of marketing
initiatives to raise awareness of CellShip®, its
other products and services, and the company
itself.
“We are thankful to Medilink East Midlands for

environment. As part of the support on offer, Medilink Midlands provides:
n
Business coaching, advisory support and signposting for companies based in the
East Midlands looking to develop products or services for use within the NHS
n
Innovation support grants to East Midlands SMEs that are outside the scope of
existing ERDF projects
n
A programme of events focused on supporting companies to access the NHS
n
An enhanced “NHS linkage service”, acting as a connector for businesses and
clinicians

WMAHSN Industry Innovation Gateway
The West Midlands Academic Health Science Network (WMAHSN) Industry Innovation
Gateway, delivered by Medilink Midlands, acts as a single point of entry for all
medical / health technology and life science businesses who wish to engage with the
WMAHSN.
With comprehensive networks across the health and life science sector, the Industry
Innovation Gateway provides essential connectivity to the business, clinical, academic,
regulatory and finance communities, helping businesses to form new collaborative
partnerships and to navigate the increasing complex health innovation landscape.
Meridian is WMAHSN’s interactive online innovation health exchange designed
to support the West Midlands innovation ecosystem, assisting NHS, academic,
commercial and industrial stakeholders, and supporting a collaborative approach to
resolving clinical and service challenges to build a region-wide innovation culture.
If you have an innovative product or service available that has significant potential
to benefit both patients and the health service Medilink West Midlands will look
to facilitate your need by assisting with your Meridian Innovation Submission and
developing key relationship management with appropriate clinical groups and
stakeholders with you, to assist the right innovations to evolve and move forward with
the NHS.
Working closely with MidTECH the West Midlands NHS technology transfer office,
the Industry Innovation Gateway helps to identify opportunities for collaboration with
SMEs, supporting the commercialisation of NHS intellectual property, resulting in
licensing and spin out opportunities for industry that will impact on wealth generation
and employment, further contributing to the local economy.

Annual Report 2021
The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in a critical
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) shortage
across the West Midlands region and throughout
the UK. The Birmingham Hospitals Alliance (BHA)
were using approximately 100,000 surgical gowns
a week and their central procurement team
quickly realised they could not continue to rely
solely on international markets and decided to
take matters into their own hands.
Birmingham Hospitals Alliance (BHA) sought
WMAHSNs assistance in finding local companies
that could support their urgent and ongoing
requirements to produce surgical gowns. Through
collaborative working and partnerships amongst
the health care businesses and academic
community, the Birmingham Hospitals Alliance
(BHA) formed a consortium of Midlands based
manufacturers and the West Midlands PPE
Collective was created. This led to the mass
production of critically needed surgical gowns on
a national and local level, creating new purpose-
built spaces and jobs.
With the support of Medilink West Midlands,
working as the WMAHSN Industry Gateway the
West Midlands PPE Collective was able to secure
its first contracts with regional hospitals via the
BHA. Both organisations played a pivotal role in
bringing the collective together and helping them
to navigate the supply chain routes into the NHS.
Some of the organisations who had previously
never before worked within the health care sector
were joining forces with veterans serving this
sector, learning from each other about techniques
and approaches from other sectors.
From this work the Industry Innovation Gateway
worked alongside four companies to spin out
into a new medical business (TecMan, Airguard
Medical, Contechs Medical and Mackwell).

Pulse Health Systems Limited is a software
development company, formed in 2016, which
was looking to develop their Pulse Health App,
which is an instant message communication
platform designed for the NHS; available on
iOS and Android. The instant message platform
is similar to WhatsApp and has a wide range
of user-friendly, productivity-enhancing, and
secure features.
Pulse Health Systems was made aware of
the support on offer as part of the Medilink
Midlands East Midlands Academic Health
Science Network (EMAHSN) Business Support
Programme, and an advisor worked extensively
with the company to help them better integrate
their software into the existing digital NHS
infrastructure. It was highlighted that the
company would need extensive sector-specific
knowledge, particularly in the areas of IP
protection, GDPR and regulatory. Medilink
Midlands used its extensive network to make
bespoke recommendations to Pulse Health
Systems and put the company in touch with the
EMAHSN.
The EMAHSN then introduced Pulse Health
Systems to NHSX – the digital arm of the NHS,
which is responsible for setting national policy
and developing best practice for National Health
Service technology, digital and data, including
data sharing and transparency. Thanks to this
introduction, Pulse Health Systems were able
to fully integrate with existing NHS systems
and create an app with bespoke messaging and
video solutions which are tailored to the NHS
environment. The Pulse Health app now has
over 1.7m users, and the company has since
expanded into the social care market as a result.

AFORTIORI DEVELOPMENT LTD
Afortiori is a full-service clinical research company that works with companies
to design, manage and report clinical trials for all types of medical products.
As a Medilink Midlands member, Afortiori have met a large number of new
collaborators and made some very valuable new business relationships.
The biggest challenge in Afortiori’s specific area Contract Research
Organisations (CRO) is to get the message across to potential clients that
they have both the capability and capacity, as a small business, to support
companies throughout their clinical trial. Afortiori feel that there is a
perception that using small companies is a risk, however, that risk is mitigated
when that small company has the same wealth of expertise and knowledge that larger companies have, and with
superior client service, so this is what makes the difference. Medilink Midlands have continued to help Afortiori to
promote their business to all types of potential new clients, as Medilink Midlands believes in Afortiori’s expertise and
ability to deliver on their promise to help companies get the right trial designed and managed to meet their needs.
Going forward, as Afortiori continues to grow and develop, the company anticipates that Medilink Midlands can continue
to provide opportunities to expand Afortiori’s audience and help them to find new clients and collaborators.

CAMBRIDGE SLEEP SCIENCES
Cambridge Sleep Sciences create innovative products that
help improve quality of life through natural sleep. Medilink
Midlands’ network of members helped Cambridge Sleep
Sciences to fast track their business launch and bring their
first product, “SleepHub home”, to the market in under 11
months.
Medilink Midlands helped the company to recruit a
manufacturing manager, recommended prototyping
specialists and introduced them to their IP lawyers. As
Cambridge Sleep Sciences has expanded, suggestions for
additional manufacturing sites in Europe and North America
have allowed them to cope with the product range and sales
growth. The Medilink Midlands communications team have
also provided coverage to members of company media
releases.
Cambridge Sleep Sciences are launching further products
into their range. SleepHub hotel: for the hospitality market
and SleepHub anywhere which is a mass market device
for anyone wanting to improve their sleep. Alongside these, they are developing a medical-grade product for specific
disease areas.
To deliver this, Cambridge Sleep Sciences will need support in a number of different areas, including app development,
certifications, manufacturing and clinical trial support. Cambridge Sleep Sciences believes that being part of the
Medilink Midlands Member network will be an invaluable asset to achieving this. When Cambridge Sleep Sciences
costed out the benefits of their membership in the first year, they believed they have gained significant savings and
taken at least three months off their lead times.

CONTECHS
MEDICAL
After issuing a call to
arms to business to help
supply or manufacture PPE,
the West Midlands Combined
Authority (WMCA) teamed up with Medilink
Midlands, the region’s industry association
for the life sciences and medical technology
sectors and the West Midlands Academic
Health Science Network (WMAHSN) with
their link to the wider industry, who have
been supporting the recruitment of suitable
businesses.
Two of many businesses that came forward
were Autins Group PLC, specialists in
providing materials and products for
acoustic and thermal management
solutions, and Contechs Holdings Ltd, a T1
automotive design, development trimming
consultancy. Both companies were exploring
how manufacturing capabilities, facilities
and skills could be used to address the
issue of supplying PPE products, but thanks
to Medilink Midlands and the WMAHSN
industrial gateway team they are now
working collaboratively.
Initially, Autins was manufacturing face
masks utilising its skills and knowledge
of specialist acoustic and insulation
materials, and Contechs was supporting
specialist workwear companies with
preparing material to produce scrubs
using its large cutting platform. Both these
companies would have had to furlough
all, or the majority of their staff, and their
manufacturing technology would otherwise
have been dormant due to the shutdown
of the automotive sector was it not for this
work.
Since being linked together by Medilink
Midlands and WMAHSN, the two
organisations have now been working
together on manufacturing face masks.
Autins is continuing to produce the
face masks, while Contechs has been
subcontracted and is using sewing and
trimming expertise to finalise and attach
ear loops to the masks. Following the two
automotive companies being introduced,
Autins and Contechs are in talks to
collaborate on other areas of work within
the automotive sector post Covid-19.
HOSPITAL DIRECT LTD
Hospital Direct is a fast paced, rapidly growing
organisation which is dedicated to helping people
around the world. From providing personal
independence to safe patient handling solutions,
Hospital Direct provide their customers with the tools
they need to sustain an active and healthy lifestyle.
Hospital Direct is a trusted supplier across
the healthcare market. The company has been
manufacturing and supplying the NHS and associated
healthcare establishments with UK made patient
handling aids for over 25 years. The CiFi Torch is one
of the most powerful high-quality LED forensic light
sources currently available on the global market.
Standing for ‘Cleaning Inspection Forensic Investigation
Torch’, the product can locate traces not visible to the
naked eye, even in bright light ambient conditions. The
Covid pandemic heightened the need for effective ways
of identifying poor cleaning which can encourage the
spread of infection and viruses. CopperTree’s CiFi torch
can see what the naked eye cannot, as its powerful
LED’s can locate and detect traces of latent fingerprints,
sweat, urine, saliva, blood, and other biological traces
which can encourage the spread of infection and
viruses. The torch uses specific colour wavelengths
of light to highlight unclean and potentially infectious
surfaces during forensic examination.
As a Medilink Midlands member, Hospital Direct was
made aware of Medilink Midlands’ business to business
service. This resulted in Hospital Direct being connected
to Coppertree Forensics, who’s existing product, the CiFi
Torch, had only previously been used in the criminology,
security and law enforcement sectors and were now
looking to introduce it into the healthcare market.
Thanks to Medilink Midlands, the new CiFi Torch
is available from Hospital Direct, offering profound
advantages in fast infection control in any healthcare
environment from Operating Theatres, ICU, Radiology,
Elderly Care Units, Mortuaries and Pathology to
Ambulances, Care Homes and GP Practices, plus
other communal rooms such as toilets, offices and
restaurants.
The company is excited about opening up the healthcare
market to the benefits that the CiFi Torch pack can offer
customers across the country and its ability to manage
their cleaning protocols effectively and efficiently to the
benefits of all – organisations, staff and patients.

  • 1. The Life Science Support Organisation for the Midlands ANNUAL REPORT 2 0 2 1
  • 2. Taking care of your IP “Adamson Jones IP Ltd fields a particularly strong caseload in the life sciences and medical devices sectors…UK SMEs account for a significant portion of its client base, as do start-ups and university spin-outs.” - Legal 500 UK, 2021
  • 3. 3 Annual Report 2021 INTRODUCTION This past year has been like no other. At the beginning of the financial year, when we embarked on bringing the East and West Medilinks together into ‘Medilink Midlands’, we were mindful of the challenges posed and were determined to maintain a proactive and excellent service to all of our members. Looking back over the year, government restrictions have caused us all to adapt the way we work, to maintain the health and safety of staff while ensuring business sustainability. I am so proud to say that the staff of Medilink Midlands, led by the Chief Executive and my fellow board members, have worked tirelessly to ensure that good service delivery was maintained throughout. Despite the pandemic bringing extraordinary changes to our operations, we have produced a steady financial performance throughout, confirming the resilience of our organisation. This gives us a great platform to continue to deliver a high-quality service for our members and we remain true to our core values. Medilink Midlands is a cornerstone of the life sciences sector. Supporting a growing regional life science base means we must also consider the economy. Going forward we want to ensure that our plans and partnerships with key stakeholders have the Midlands’s capabilities, skills, and people at the heart of them. The pandemic has re-defined our society. Government, institutions and all major stakeholders have to now re- examine how we go forward and recalibrate our vision of what our society should be in the future. I am confident that we will succeed by working together and supporting each other. Covid-19 has been a tragedy for so many organisations in the UK and the wider world, but to’ build back better’ we must collectively ensure that ‘levelling up’ is not just a meaningless phrase but a dynamic opportunity realised by all. • 16. THE CITY OF MENTOR, OHIO MIDLANDS IN FOCUS Medilink Midlands has been involved in a number of strategic activities throughout the past year alongside the Midlands Engine, to help promote the Midlands region as a great place to do business. Medilink Midlands Directors Mike Hannay and Charles De Rohan sit on the Midlands Engine Health Board along with Medilink Midlands Chief Executive Darren Clark, to help shape the strategic direction of Midlands Engine Health and ensure that the industries voice is heard. To this end, Medilink Midlands supported and chaired their first industry roundtable event, which gave delegates the opportunity to share industry perspectives on the challenges, barriers and opportunities for the life sciences sector in the Midlands. Medilink Midlands utilised its extensive network to ensure that a substantial number of life science businesses, of various specialisms and sizes, were able to attend. This gave the event an industry focus which helped to inform Midlands Engine’s future operations and efforts. As a key bridge between government and Industry, Medilink Midlands assistance in this event was crucial to its success. Medilink Midlands supported the Midlands Engine Economic Observatory (MEEO) in a study entitled ‘Research to strengthen the resilience of health and life science manufacturing in the Midlands’. This was done to inform policy development of the Midlands Engine team to see what can be done, or put in place to support life science companies in the future. Medilink Midlands identified key companies from across the sector and put them in touch with the Midlands Engine research team. Interviews and appointments were arranged, and the MEEO team received crucial industry insight into its research, which may not have happened so quickly, without Medilink Midlands assistance. MI Health (MIH) commissioned an assessment of the nature and scale of the Med-Tech sector in the Midlands, what Med-Tech businesses in the Midlands need and the barriers they face. Medilink Midlands was a key partner in the creation of this report, alongside the East and West Midlands Academic Health Science Networks. The findings from this assessment will support the development of the Medical Technologies Innovation Accelerator and help MIH and its regional partners to better understand how they can support the sector in the future. Medilink Midlands has also recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the West Midlands Health and Technology Cluster to help further align our activity in support of the sector across the region. MIDLANDS ENGINE Medilink Midlands has collaborated with its network to help deliver a number of regional initiatives and projects: Medilink Midlands and the City of Mentor announced a strategic collaboration to promote bilateral trade and investment between the Midlands and Northeast Ohio, USA in August 2018. Since that time, both Medilink Midlands and the City of Mentor have travelled to and from the UK and the US, to build relationships, trade networks, and business collaborations. Northeast Ohio has a lot of opportunities for UK life science companies looking to make inroads into the American market. Manufacturing costs are low, the region has a stable and experienced workforce, has an excellent transport and distribution infrastructure and the local government is pro-business and committed to ensuring the continued economic success of the city. Northeast Ohio is also home to internationally recognised clinical research institutions, including the prestigious Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals and Case Western Reserve University, providing North East Ohio biomedical and med-tech companies with a world-class platform for research, design, and innovation. These trade missions between the City of Mentor and Medilink Midlands have already resulted in success as Medilink Midlands Member Uvamed Ltd has set up a US office in Mentor, having attended the first Medilink Midlands trade mission and conference on innovation in 2018. As a result of the ongoing and growing relationship between Medilink Midlands and the City of Mentor, it is hoped that more UK companies will establish themselves in Mentor, and that Mentor companies will establish themselves in the Midlands. As recently as October 2021, a delegation from Mentor visited the UK to attend the Med Tech Innovation (MTI) Expo and Conference, and 13 companies with American aspirations met with the Mentor delegation. 16 Annual Report 2021
  • 17. DRIVING LIFE SCIENCES BUSINESSES As part of our work with government, Medilink Midlands worked with the Department for International Trade to develop a report which outlined the Midlands prospects for foreign direct investment. This covered a wide range of areas, including existing business success stories, life science business space, the Midlands capacity for contract research and our unique position as a national centre for defence medicine. MIDLANDS INNOVATION HEALTH Medilink Midlands also works closely with Midlands Innovation Health (MI Health). MI Health coordinates and combines the collective excellence of seven Midlands Innovation universities to deliver improved health and regional growth. Medilink Midlands also delivered the Midlands Health and Life Science Symposium in late November 2021, on behalf of MI Health. The Midlands Health and Life Science Symposium shone a light on the powerhouse of Health and Life Sciences research strength that is in the Midlands, as well as the role it can play in supporting the delivery of national innovation policies and the achievement through the place agenda and adoption/innovation within the NHS. The incredible collaborations that delivered over £53 million of cutting-edge research in the fight against COVID-19 brought together academic, business and clinical experts, alongside civic and regional leaders from the Midlands and beyond to highlight what the region has to offer and to explore how excellence can be harnessed to address global healthcare challenges for increased wellbeing and productivity. Over 200 key people from across the region attended the event. MED-TECH INNOVATION EXPO Rapid News Ltd and Medilink UK have collaborated successfully on the Med-Tech Innovation Expo since 2016, when Rapid took on the annual event. The cooperation agreement between the two organisations covers a broad sweep of initiatives including marketing, conference production, show floor presence for both Medilink and its members, membership development and the production of the annual Medilink UK Healthcare Business Awards. The depth of the partnership demonstrates that both organisations are committed to working together to ensure that the event remains the premier gathering for MedTech, medical plastics, digital devices and pharmaceutical manufacturing technology businesses in the UK. MAKE UK Medilink Midlands and Make UK - the representative body for UK manufacturing, identified a mutually beneficial opportunity to work together in June 2021. The two organisations wanted to ensure that members of both parties have access to the best possible information, services and support, to deliver the best possible environment for UK manufacturing. Thanks to the newly founded partnership, Medilink Midlands members can now enjoy access to Make UK information and resources, including market intelligence and practical solutions to market needs and access to Make UK member events. Medilink Midlands is committed to working alongside Make UK to improve the image of manufacturing, and to create a favourable environment for manufacturing, at a local, regional, national and EU level. THE BIG ASK During the pandemic, Medilink Midlands were made aware of critical shortages such as PPE, raw materials, goods, skills services. In response to this, Medilink Midlands worked with the West and East Midlands Academic Health Science Networks to coordinate the region’s industrial activities and responses. Over 100 companies responded and over 110 offers of support were made, offering a wide array of products and services. After the initial wave of support from life science companies, Medilink Midlands was able to develop a free Find it/ Source it service, utilising its extensive network to respond to company requests for support, services and products. Medilink Midlands then connected businesses in its region with each other, and wider national entities and organisations where appropriate. 17 Annual Report 2021

  • 22. NuVision® Biotherapies is a regenerative medicine company which develops biotherapies for treating ‘front-of-the-eye’ disease, trauma and broader wound care. Having received support from Medilink EM before, through the previous ERDF-funded iNet project, NuVision Biotherapies was able to launch Omnigen® - a unique transportable biological matrix that is used as an effective regenerative therapy for a range of wound care indications, including ocular surface disease. Omnigen is supplied dry and contains no viable cells. It may be stored at room temperature and is ready to use straight from the sterile pack. NuVision wanted to expand the use of their product to facilitate the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers. To do this, NuVision’s Omnigen would need to go through a proof-of-concept clinical trial, as part of the product’s development. The INSTILS Adviser connected NuVision with the EMAHSN, who were able to help facilitate this. The project is now in its final stages and the resulting data has further enabled NuVision to secure a further £1.8 million of investment from the Midlands Engine Investment Proof of Concept and Early Stage Fund, to continue the development of Omnigen into new ocular indications that will enable treatment of dry eye and eye wounds in and out of clinic. “The INSTILS support has been mission critical giving new data, opening up new pathways and pilot trials that we would not have reached without the support. Every other option open to us would not have produced the critical data required.” Andrew Hopkinson, COO NuVision Biotherapies. NUVISION BIOTHERAPIES OCB Media develops training videos, free browser-based utilities and commercial applications for medical and research organisations. The company has an internally developed Learning Management System, version 5, which was successfully released in August 2018. The system was originally provided to medical students, to deliver training and learning resources for the healthcare industry, and OCB wanted to roll it out to the NHS on a national scale. Thanks to SoLSTICE support, OCB has now formed a new collaboration to help develop its new and improved e-learning tools for the NHS. This allowed them to advance their idea in a much faster and more efficient way than would have otherwise been possible. Since the release of the updated learning modules in November 2018, over 21,000 NHS staff have now registered with the free resource. In addition, an increasing number of NHS Trusts are acquiring the learning modules for use on their own learning management systems or the National Learning Management System. Following this, the OCB SCRIPT Nursing e-learning portfolio has been updated to align with the NMC’s ‘Standards of proficiency for registered nurses.’ All modules have been authored by specialist healthcare professionals and have been externally peer-reviewed to ensure accuracy. A recent study by the British Medical Journal shows that usage of OCB NEWS software substantially reduces false alerts for patients with COPD. Life Science Group (LSG), one of the UK’s leading suppliers of life science manufacturing and research solutions, approached Medilink EM for support with developing CellShip®, a unique medium that allows cells to be transported without the need for dry ice, or for the cells to be fully frozen and stored in liquid nitrogen with the issues for transport that this produces. Innovation advisors worked with Life Science Group to obtain an SNG grant for the company to attend an online cell culture conference (Best-of Biotherapeutics Analytical Summit: Cell Gene Therapy Analytics) and have recently had approval for a £57,000 ACTIS ISG grant supported project towards development of a GMP/GLP cleanroom to enable the company to further investigate and develop their innovative CellShip® product. The company has also benefited from discounted marketing support from Agora Marketing Communications. This has enabled the Life Science Group to proactively plan for the future and begin to implement a number of marketing initiatives to raise awareness of CellShip®, its other products and services, and the company itself. “We are thankful to Medilink East Midlands for helping us secure grant funding, without it we could not complete our development to make use of an opportunity for CellShip® in Spring 2022.” Jenny Murray, Managing Director, Life Science Group. Working closely with MidTECH the West Midlands NHS technology transfer office, the Industry Innovation Gateway helps to identify opportunities for collaboration with SMEs, supporting the commercialisation of NHS intellectual property, resulting in licensing and spin out opportunities for industry that will impact on wealth generation and employment, further contributing to the local economy. 24 Annual Report 2021
  • 25. The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in a critical Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) shortage across the West Midlands region and throughout the UK. The Birmingham Hospitals Alliance (BHA) were using approximately 100,000 surgical gowns a week and their central procurement team quickly realised they could not continue to rely solely on international markets and decided to take matters into their own hands. Birmingham Hospitals Alliance (BHA) sought WMAHSNs assistance in finding local companies that could support their urgent and ongoing requirements to produce surgical gowns. Through collaborative working and partnerships amongst the health care businesses and academic community, the Birmingham Hospitals Alliance (BHA) formed a consortium of Midlands based manufacturers and the West Midlands PPE Collective was created. This led to the mass production of critically needed surgical gowns on a national and local level, creating new purpose- built spaces and jobs. With the support of Medilink West Midlands, working as the WMAHSN Industry Gateway the West Midlands PPE Collective was able to secure its first contracts with regional hospitals via the BHA. Both organisations played a pivotal role in bringing the collective together and helping them to navigate the supply chain routes into the NHS. Some of the organisations who had previously never before worked within the health care sector were joining forces with veterans serving this sector, learning from each other about techniques and approaches from other sectors. From this work the Industry Innovation Gateway worked alongside four companies to spin out into a new medical business (TecMan, Airguard Medical, Contechs Medical and Mackwell). THE WEST MIDLANDS PPE COLLECTIVE WMAHSN Industry Innovation Gateway Pulse Health Systems Limited is a software development company, formed in 2016, which was looking to develop their Pulse Health App, which is an instant message communication platform designed for the NHS; available on iOS and Android. The instant message platform is similar to WhatsApp and has a wide range of user-friendly, productivity-enhancing, and secure features. Pulse Health Systems was made aware of the support on offer as part of the Medilink Midlands East Midlands Academic Health Science Network (EMAHSN) Business Support Programme, and an advisor worked extensively with the company to help them better integrate their software into the existing digital NHS infrastructure. It was highlighted that the company would need extensive sector-specific knowledge, particularly in the areas of IP protection, GDPR and regulatory. Medilink Midlands used its extensive network to make bespoke recommendations to Pulse Health Systems and put the company in touch with the EMAHSN. The EMAHSN then introduced Pulse Health Systems to NHSX – the digital arm of the NHS, which is responsible for setting national policy and developing best practice for National Health Service technology, digital and data, including data sharing and transparency. Thanks to this introduction, Pulse Health Systems were able to fully integrate with existing NHS systems and create an app with bespoke messaging and video solutions which are tailored to the NHS environment. The Pulse Health app now has over 1.7m users, and the company has since expanded into the social care market as a result. Read about how some of our members have benefitted from the opportunities available via membership. AFORTIORI DEVELOPMENT LTD Afortiori is a full-service clinical research company that works with companies to design, manage and report clinical trials for all types of medical products. As a Medilink Midlands member, Afortiori have met a large number of new collaborators and made some very valuable new business relationships. The biggest challenge in Afortiori’s specific area Contract Research Organisations (CRO) is to get the message across to potential clients that they have both the capability and capacity, as a small business, to support companies throughout their clinical trial. Afortiori feel that there is a perception that using small companies is a risk, however, that risk is mitigated when that small company has the same wealth of expertise and knowledge that larger companies have, and with superior client service, so this is what makes the difference. Medilink Midlands have continued to help Afortiori to promote their business to all types of potential new clients, as Medilink Midlands believes in Afortiori’s expertise and ability to deliver on their promise to help companies get the right trial designed and managed to meet their needs. Going forward, as Afortiori continues to grow and develop, the company anticipates that Medilink Midlands can continue to provide opportunities to expand Afortiori’s audience and help them to find new clients and collaborators.  CAMBRIDGE SLEEP SCIENCES Cambridge Sleep Sciences create innovative products that help improve quality of life through natural sleep. The Medilink Midlands communications team have also provided coverage to members of company media releases. Cambridge Sleep Sciences are launching further products into their range. SleepHub hotel: for the hospitality market and SleepHub anywhere which is a mass market device for anyone wanting to improve their sleep. Alongside these, they are developing a medical-grade product for specific disease areas. To deliver this, Cambridge Sleep Sciences will need support in a number of different areas, including app development, certifications, manufacturing and clinical trial support. Cambridge Sleep Sciences believes that being part of the Medilink Midlands Member network will be an invaluable asset to achieving this. When Cambridge Sleep Sciences costed out the benefits of their membership in the first year, they believed they have gained significant savings and taken at least three months off their lead times.
  • 29. 29 Annual Report 2021 CONTECHS MEDICAL After issuing a call to arms to business to help supply or manufacture PPE, the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) teamed up with Medilink Midlands, the region’s industry association for the life sciences and medical technology sectors and the West Midlands Academic Health Science Network (WMAHSN) with their link to the wider industry, who have been supporting the recruitment of suitable businesses. Two of many businesses that came forward were Autins Group PLC, specialists in providing materials and products for acoustic and thermal management solutions, and Contechs Holdings Ltd, a T1 automotive design, development trimming consultancy. Both companies were exploring how manufacturing capabilities, facilities and skills could be used to address the issue of supplying PPE products, but thanks to Medilink Midlands and the WMAHSN industrial gateway team they are now working collaboratively. Initially, Autins was manufacturing face masks utilising its skills and knowledge of specialist acoustic and insulation materials, and Contechs was supporting specialist workwear companies with preparing material to produce scrubs using its large cutting platform. Both these companies would have had to furlough all, or the majority of their staff, and their manufacturing technology would otherwise have been dormant due to the shutdown of the automotive sector was it not for this work. Since being linked together by Medilink Midlands and WMAHSN, the two organisations have now been working together on manufacturing face masks. Autins is continuing to produce the face masks, while Contechs has been subcontracted and is using sewing and trimming expertise to finalise and attach ear loops to the masks. Following the two automotive companies being introduced, Autins and Contechs are in talks to collaborate on other areas of work within the automotive sector post Covid-19. The CiFi Torch is one of the most powerful high-quality LED forensic light sources currently available on the global market. Standing for ‘Cleaning Inspection Forensic Investigation Torch’, the product can locate traces not visible to the naked eye, even in bright light ambient conditions. The Covid pandemic heightened the need for effective ways of identifying poor cleaning which can encourage the spread of infection and viruses. CopperTree’s CiFi torch can see what the naked eye cannot, as its powerful LED’s can locate and detect traces of latent fingerprints, sweat, urine, saliva, blood, and other biological traces which can encourage the spread of infection and viruses. The torch uses specific colour wavelengths of light to highlight unclean and potentially infectious surfaces during forensic examination. As a Medilink Midlands member, Hospital Direct was made aware of Medilink Midlands’ business to business service. This resulted in Hospital Direct being connected to Coppertree Forensics, who’s existing product, the CiFi Torch, had only previously been used in the criminology, security and law enforcement sectors and were now looking to introduce it into the healthcare market. Thanks to Medilink Midlands, the new CiFi Torch is available from Hospital Direct, offering profound advantages in fast infection control in any healthcare environment from Operating Theatres, ICU, Radiology, Elderly Care Units, Mortuaries and Pathology to Ambulances, Care Homes and GP Practices, plus other communal rooms such as toilets, offices and restaurants. The company is excited about opening up the healthcare market to the benefits that the CiFi Torch pack can offer customers across the country and its ability to manage their cleaning protocols effectively and efficiently to the benefits of all – organisations, staff and patients.
