He was better known as Sylvester II. He was born in
France in 1003. He was a famous mathematic that
promoted the study of arabic and greco roman
arithmetic.

Gerberto wrote a series of works dealing with matters
of the quadrivium, which he taught using the basis of
the trivium.

Gerbert learned of Hindu-Arabic digits and applied
this knowledge to the abacus, but according to Charles

The abacus that Gerberto reintroduced into Europe had its
length divided into 27 parts with 9 number symbols
6. Its legend
Gerbert was accused by his enemies of having
studied magical arts and astrology at the Islamic cities
of Córdoba and Seville and even at the University of Al
Karaouine in Morroco. This gave rise to legends that
portray him as a sorcerer in league with the Devil.
