Film finance is when producers haveto producea development whilst in the
pre-production phase. Itis the value of money spent on a
film. For pre-production in films it is very important to
budget money spent.
Development budgets include things like: research
expenses, travelling, costof duplicating scripts,
production of art and storyboards, legalcosts, script
payments, and script readings with the cast.
Not only do the producers need to spend money on equipment, but they have
to spend money on the crew, transport, materials, clearances, talent and
facility hire. Funding costs for a film can be very expensive, so film producers
and the government might cover the costwith public and joint financing
schemes.
The budget is typically divided into four sections including, abovethe line
(creative talent), and below the line (direction production costs), post
production (editing and visual effects) and other (insuranceand completion
bonds). Producers also need to take into account the cost for equipment and
the camera crew needed. Producers need to think about booking facilities to
hire, there could also be studios they need for a set time period. For example,
they’d need to book a studio like WestLondon.
Logistics
Logistics is the organization of an operation. The logistic managedresources
are items suchas food, materials, animals, and equipment.
Logistics include careful planning, organisation, coordinationand
implementation.
Requirementsof Financing
Equipment
To create afilm, it needs tohave good equipment
to make it successful. Producersneedtothink
about hiring/leasing the equipment. The video
camera includes any accessories the company
wants. Depending on the equipment, it can be
more or less expensive thanothers. Alsoat
different filmcompanies it can be different.
Software equipment for creating films includes Adobe, where it canprotect
documents and accelerate informationexchange. There is many other
software available instudios like Final Cut StudioPro, iLife, Image Capture,
iSync, iTunes, Microsoft andPremiere. Hardware equipment for filming
could include, DV/DVD recording deck, DVrecording decks whiteboards and
more recording decks.
Transportation
Producers alsoneedto think about transport for the cast, crew members and
themselves. Producers needtothink about transport for all the equipment
they need. Vehicle choice is very important if the cast and the crew are low
numbers, they might try to hire cars. However, if the numbers are bigger they
might try hiring tour buses. If the locationthey are filming at is further away,
like overseait wouldbe more expensive toget every cast andcrew member
a ticket togo oversea. Transportationis very important for both crew and
the equipment. The locations could be at a filmstudio, or another specific
location. Producers wouldhave tocheck the availability of the studios or the
locationthey would like tofilm.
Crew
Crew includes the people working for the productionteam like the makeup
artists, technicians, visual effectscoordinator, mechanics, electricians, special
effects, transportationdrivers, script supervisors, assistants, designersand
artists. These are very important people neededtocreate afilm, without
whom a filmwouldn’t be possible.
Clearances
The clearance coordinator is responsible for talking tothe director about
clearances, they are responsible for activitieslike securing rightsfor
copyrightedmaterials.
Talent
Casting members, producers anddirectors see all the talent andhave to
decide who will be playing who in the film. Alsothe artists propmakers,
producers, and editors all have talent inmaking the film. Whether it is to
helpcreate props, or do someone’s make up well. They all have talent to
helpcreate a movie. The crew all have talent tohelp create the movie. Also
the skillset of the people wouldn’t be possible without. It isn’t just the people
who are in the film(star appeal) but it is people behind the sets making it all
possible.
Facility Hire
Producers have to take intoaccount, the facility hire andhave to book out
studios and chosenplaces ahead of time. They needto think about time
scales of booking equipment and facilities. Whether it is hiring the studios,
on location, CGI, or hiring the greenscreen.
Materials
Producers and the filmcrew we needto spendadditional money for the
materials they need. Or buying materials for prop or producing a scene.
Materials alsocanbe researchintothe filmlike, library materials, online
materials, original materials, sound materials, audio, script, animatic, and
graphic materials.
Personnel
This is hiring specialist crew, whospecialiseinthe areas for film. Like the
technical crew for things like electrics, andonline work. Alsocrew like actors,
extras andcontributors for the making of the film. It can dependon pre-
productionwork, like making storyboards or storylines. Or production when
making the film or post productionafter filming or editing.
Locations
People inthe filmhave to identify where they are going tofilm. They then
have toproduce recces, limitations, andrisks whenfilming out there. The
locationcan be abroad or in the same country. They have to know they travel
time, the distance they’ll be going, the cost and the weather for filming. Then
they’dhave tocome up witha contingency plan, in case things go wrong on
the day due to weather.
Time
Time scales is essential infilmproduction, producers have tofollow a specific
time frame for a filmto be made successfully. Throughtime scales producers
have tocheck availability of equipment, availability of the cast and the crew
and to make sure filmdeadlines are met.
For films one page of script is the equivalent of one minute finishedfilm
screentime. For films the cast and the crew needto be there for possibly a
longer time. Filming deadlines involvedinthe films couldbe for the film
trailer. Producers might decide tofilmthe whole filmor filmsnippets anduse
themfor the trailer.
TV couldbe slightly different, evenif it is aseries or live. Live TV tends tobe
for a shorter time period. Andseries is whencast andcrew are neededfor
longer, basically a shorter film.
Audio for example the radiocan run from a certaintime. But there is always
a radio show on, run by different people. They canbe in the morning,
afternoonor evening, this shows they are constantly running without fail.
They’re always on to keeppeople entertained. Producers or the crew needa
time to know whenthe show is changing from different people. Also, the
radio shows can be recordedbeforehand.
Digital Publishing cantake minutes, days, weeks, or evenin some cases
months. This is all dependent onthe sizes of texts, they take time to
develop.
Digital Games can take years to make, for example Assassin’sCreedtook
about two years tocreate.
