Measuring devices
Trade Exploration
Module 2
Measuring devices
• Measuring tools are essential accessories needed to
measure physical quantities. In fields such as physics,
quality assurance, and engineering, measurement is the
activity of obtaining and comparing quantities of
particular objects.
• The measurement gives a number related to the item
under study and the referenced unit of measurement.
• One minor error in measurement ruins the whole project.
To avoid such errors, you need to be well versed in the
different types of measuring tools and their functions.
Why math is important in
trades?
• Professional craftsmen know the importance of
mathematics in trades, since it is used for calculating the
connections for metal frames and how to make wooden
joints and finding precise angles. craftsmen who are good
at math can work on precise, complicated projects.
• Math skills allow craftsmen to complete more projects
and increase their productivity. Good mathematical skill
also allows them to prevent mistakes and inaccuracies
that would otherwise ruin their project.
Torpedo Level
• A torpedo level is a type of spirit level that is an essential tool
for any professional working in tight spaces. The body of the
level is made of either metal or plastic and contains two or
three tube vials. These tubes, or vials, contain yellowish-green
additives and are used to determine the surface level.
vernier calliper
• Is a measuring device that consists of a main scale with a fixed
jaw and a sliding jaw with an attached vernier.
Framing Square
• A framing square, also known as a steel square or a carpenter
square. Despite its name, the tool is in most cases actually
shaped like an L instead of a square, though it is used in many
framing projects — from framing structure for buildings. The
tool’s main advantage is its ability to identify clean and even
angles. It’s usually made of aluminum or other metal and has
a long arm that forms a right angle with a shorter arm. The
longer arm is typically used to measure right angles.
Try square
• A try square or try-square is a tool used for marking and
checking 90° angles on pieces of metal
Adjustable Quick Square
• The square's adjustable arm ensures precise measurements.
Multi-purpose, adjustable design can be used as a saw guide,
bevel or protractor.
Combination Square
• A combination square is a multi-purpose measuring and
marking tool used in metalworking. It is composed of a rule
and one or more interchangeable heads that can be attached
to the rule.
Measuring tape
• A tape measure or measuring tape is a flexible ruler used to
measure length or distance. It consists metal strip with linear
measurement markings. It is a common measuring tool.

Pressure gauges (Oxygen/Acetylene)
• pressure gauge, instrument for measuring the condition of a
fluid (liquid or gas) that is specified by the force that the fluid
would exert, when at rest, on a unit area, such as pounds
per square inch (PSI) or newton per square centimeter.

Thermometer
• Non-contact thermometers, also known as infrared (IR)
thermometers, obtain a temperature measurement from a
distance. Fast, simple and affordable, an infrared welding
thermometer is a great way to get hassle-free temperature
readings.

Multimeter
• an instrument designed to measure electric current, voltage,
and usually resistance, typically over several ranges of value.
Refrigeration manometer
• This kind of gauge, also known as Freon manometer, is used to
measure pressure in freezing and air conditioning in cold
rooms, also this instrument used to measure gas pressures.
