This document defines and provides examples of calculating the mean, median, mode, and range of data sets. The mean is calculated by summing the values and dividing by the total numbers. The median is the middle number of the ordered data set. The mode is the number that occurs most frequently. The range is the difference between the greatest and smallest numbers.

2. The mean (or average) of a set of data is the sum of the
data divided by the number of items in the data set.
Below are the number of apples Tom ate in the past 5
weeks:
Week 1: 3
Week 2: 2
Week 3: 0
Week 4: 4

1. Find the sum: 3 + 2 + 0 + 4 + 6 = 15
2. Divide the sum by the number of items: 15/5 = 3
3. 3 is the mean or average

3. The median of a set of data is the middle
number of the ordered data, or the mean of the
middle two numbers.
data set: 17, 2, 10, 0, 1, 11, 5
Ordered data set: 0, 1, 2, 5, 10, 11, 17
5 is the median (the middle number)
Data set: 10, 9, 21, 32, 7, 15
Ordered data set: 7, 9, 10, 15, 21, 32
10 + 15 = 25/2 = 12.5
12.5 is the median

4. The mode or modes of a set of data is the
number or numbers that occur most often.
Data set: 7, 11, 15, 17, 20, 20
Mode: 20
Data set: 50, 45, 45, 52, 49, 56, 56
Modes: 45, 56

5. The range of a set of data is the difference
between the greatest number and the smallest
number.
Data set: 2, 1, 8, 0, 2, 4, 4, 4
Ordered data set: 0, 1, 2, 2, 4, 4, 4, 8
8–0=8
Range: 8
