restaurants (approximately 82%) owned and operated by independent franchisees.
• Franchising enables an individual to own a restaurant business and maintain control over
personnel, purchasing, marketing and pricing decisions, while also benefiting from the
strength of McDonald’s global brand, operating system and financial resources.
McDonald’s restaurants offer a substantially uniform menu, although there are geographic
variations to suit local consumer preferences and tastes. In addition, McDonald’s tests new
products on an ongoing basis.

1. Inconsistent menus in different countries
• While a localized menu is one of the key strengths of McDonalds, it’s also one of the chain’s
weaknesses.
• Due to menu differences between different franchisees and directly-owned restaurants,
people can no longer expect the same level of service or menu in each McDonald’s
restaurant.
• Often, you can’t order the same deli wrap or a McRib sandwich in every restaurant in your
town.
