1. MBA aspirants guide to GMAT
What is GMAT?
The Graduate Management Admission Test or GMAT is a multiple choice, computer-adaptive
test organized by GMAC (Graduate Management Admissions Council). This test is conducted
for admission in a management program globally, such as MBA or Masters in Management.
This exam assists the business schools to shortlist the deserving candidates on their preparedness
at graduation level academic work. To be brief, if you wish to enrol in major league International
Business Management Schools or Universities, your GMAT score is your litmus test.
What is the format of GMAT?
GMAT analyses the applicant based on four sections; which are, Integrated Reasoning, Verbal,
Quantitative and Analytical Writing Assessment. These exams test the applicant’s knowledge
and command over basic Mathematics, algebra, arithmetic, geometry. English grammar,
communication, reasoning and critical thinking.
The computer-adaptive nature of the test makes it a little tricky. This means that the difficulty
level of a question will be decided by the accuracy on the previous question. Very recently, GMAT
2. has shortened the duration of the exam by reducing the number of questions on both Quant and
Verbal sections.
GMAT Exam time?
The GMAT exam might take little over 3 hours. Below is the time breakage of individual section
tests under GMAT –
GMAT Section Time allotted
Verbal 65 Min
Quantitative 62 Min
Integrated Reasoning 30 Min
Analytical Writing Assessment 30 Min

There are a total of 36 questions in the Verbal section, out of which, around 13 will be from
Sentence Correction, around 13 from Reading Comprehension and around 10 from Critical
Reasoning.
These questions come in a mixed format and have to be completed within 65 minutes. The
preparation of the Verbal section requires a thorough understanding of English grammar and
ability to read and comprehend quickly.
Quantitative Section
The Quantitative section consists of two major question types:
Problem Solving
Data Sufficiency
3. This section does not test you on your core knowledge of Mathematics, but rather on your ability
to comprehend numbers and problems. It tests your ability to reason mathematically.
The Problem Solving questions test your ability to analytically reason in order to solve
mathematical problems. The Data Sufficiency questions ask you to recognize relevant data and
answer how much data is sufficient.
Integrated Reasoning
There are four types of questions on the Integrated Reasoning section:
1. Multi-source Reasoning
2. Table Analysis
3. Graphics Interpretation
4. Two-part Analysis
The Integrated Reasoning section has a separate score of 1-8 and doesn’t contribute to the score
out of 800. This section has 12 questions, with each of them having sub-questions. These 12
questions are to be solved within 30 minutes, In order to get the entire question correct, you’ll
have to get every sub-question correct too. It is basically test of integrating data to solve complex
problems.
Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA)
Analytical writing assessment requires you to present a critique of the argument, based on your
analysis of the reasoning behind it. Just like the Integrated Section, the AWA’s score is also not
included in your 800, but has a separate score of 0-6. This section is of 30 minutes and along with
testing your analytical thinking ability, it also tests your English-writing skills. The topics of
arguments for AWA can be from various areas i.e. business, science, or a variety of other subjects.
