ALAN TAYLOR APR 23, 2018 25 PHOTOS IN FOCUS
Off the coast of Yemen, in the Arabian Sea, lies isolated Socotra Island, where
hundreds of plants and animals have developed into species unique to the island.
Socotra is the largest island in an archipelago that includes three other islands. The
Socotra Archipelago has been isolated from any large landmass for millions of years,
and is now home to a surprising display of biodiversity. Probably the best-known of its
endemic flora is the dragon blood tree, with red-colored sap and tightly-clustered
branches that look like roots turned upside down. Below, a collection of images of the
landscape of Socotra, and the plants and animals that call it home.

Zhou Xing Ci’s family have farmed
poppies for as long as anyone
remembers, scraping the flowers'
sticky brown sap to produce opium.
Along with many other farmers in
the hills of eastern Myanmar, the
crop – much of which ends up as
heroin sold on foreign streets - has
in recent years put Myanmar
behind only Afghanistan as the
world’s leading source of opium.

house surrounded by his mulberry farm.
“That tradition stops with me,”
Zhou, 42, told Reuters at his
sturdy new timber house in
Tangyan township, in the north of
Shan State.
Zhou is now in his third year
raising silkworms rather than
poppies, and says quicker profits
have enabled his family - with six
children - to upgrade from a
bamboo hut.

A Chinese company working with
farmers like Zhou hopes the silk-
producing larva can help the
farmers, and their country, quit
the drug.
“Growing opium is too tough. It’s
only one harvest every year and a
rain can easily destroy a whole
year’s work,” said Zhou.

The price for opium has fallen,
he said, and growing poppies
risked running afoul of heavy-
handed eradication efforts by
Myanmar authorities.
The price drop, alongside the
rise of synthetic drugs like
methamphetamine, has
contributed to a 25 percent
fall in the total area of
Myanmar under poppy
cultivation since 2015,
according to the United
Nations Office on Drugs and
Crime (UNODC).

The U.N. agency has assisted more than 1,000 farmers to switch from
opium to another cash crop, coffee, since 2014, said Troels Vester,
UNODC country manager for Myanmar.
Still, 41,000 hectares (101,313 acres) of poppy was planted in
Myanmar last year, the agency said. Farmers in conflict areas were
less likely to have moved to licit crops, it added.
In the corner of Myanmar where Zhou lives, bordering China's Yunnan
province, various armed groups operate and the law is barely
enforced, providing a haven for opium traders, as well as heroin
producers and meth-lab operators.

“It was nothing but poppy farms when we first arrived in
this area in 2014,” said Wang Bing, 63, vice general
manager of DH Silco Enterprise, the Chinese company
working with farmers, navigating a winding dirt road in a
four-wheel drive.
The company is working with more than 1,800 families,
who grow mulberry bushes to feed the silkworms on
2,000 hectares (5,000 acres) of land, producing at least
288,000 kg of cocoons to be exported to China each year,
Wang said.

About 50 sericulturalists from China
help farmers to harvest as often as

Some villagers have moved to lower lying areas to
take part. Others are now farming silkworms
alongside other crops like watermelons.
But old habits are hard to break.
During Reuters’ last visit in April, Zhou’s children
played with poppy-farming tools, and a small plot
of poppy stalks grew next to his mulberry bushes.
His neighbour was growing a small amount to feed
his grandfather’s opium addiction, Zhou said.

Europe’s migrant barrier nears breaking point
MAY 4, 2018
At the heart of Moria, an overcrowded refugee
camp on the Greek island of Lesbos, is a dark
rectangular building ringed with police guards
and coils of razor wire. Taking photographs of it
is prohibited.
It’s here that thousands of migrants are
interviewed by asylum officers _ and ultimately
informed whether they will ever be allowed to
leave the island.
Holding up a tattered asylum card that reads
“Forbidden to travel outside Lesbos,” 40-year-
old Syrian Ziad Rashid said he was supposed to
be deported back to Turkey after he
unsuccessfully appealed his failed application.
But Turkey’s effective refusal to re-admit
migrants means there’s nowhere he could go.
“I’ve been here for two years,” says Rashid,
struggling to find the words in broken Greek and
English. “It’s a big problem.”

Lesbos is facing a fourth summer of crisis.
It’s one of five Greek islands near the
coast of Turkey being used by the
European Union to form a barrier to
migration after more than a million
people came through here in 2015-16,
heading to western Europe.
But with 7,000 inhabitants, the refugee
camp at Moria is now three times over
capacity, and outbreaks of violence, often
triggered by trivial disputes, are
increasingly common. A clinic run by the
aid group Doctors Without Borders helps
treat the sick among the camp’s 2,000
children, but has to turn less serious cases
away.
Even so, more keep arriving: The number
of island arrivals has surged this year
from about 50 a day in 2017 to around
200 a day in recent weeks. Asylum
applications are backed up by nearly
three years, according to Lesbos’ regional
governor.

Many island residents are angry to be
missing out on a tourism boom that’s
helping the country emerge from a
decade of financial crisis. Business
owners closed their stores for 24 hours in
protest at the government visit, and
street protests turned violent.
“We all welcomed the refugees. But
there is a problem and it has to be taken
seriously ... We have a good quality of
life here and it’s been taken away,” said
Akis Argiropoulos, a hotel manager in
the island’s capital, Mytilene. “Without
the proper facilities and policing, the
island cannot handle all of this burden.”

Currently, asylum seekers on five Aegean
Sea islands _ Lesbos, Chios, Samos, Leros,
and Kos _ are banned from traveling onto
the Greek mainland as part of the European
Union’s controversial “containment policy.”
That’s causing severe overcrowding at the
islands’ camps, and the government has
faced legal challenges and protests against
the measure.
Meanwhile, to try and bypass the islands, an
even higher number of migrants and
refugees is now crossing Greece’s heavily
militarized land border with Turkey in the
northeast of the country.
That has forced the Greece to overhaul its
policy, and parliament is now debating draft
legislation aimed at easing pressure on the
islands. Under the proposal, migrants would
be allowed to move to camps on the Greek
mainland, but they would remain under
restriction and could be banned from
leaving the regions of the country where
they are placed.

The plan has already drawn fire from
human rights groups which argue that
containment is to blame for poor living
conditions on the islands.
“This situation causes distress, violates
people’s rights, and insults the dignity
of some of the world’s most vulnerable
people. It’s an open wound for Greece
and human rights,” Dimitra
Spatharidou, from the Greek office of
Amnesty International, told a
parliamentary committee.
Amnesty observers recently visited
island camps, and found hundreds of
people sleeping in makeshift tents,
children sleeping in unsupervised sites,
and some resting in fields they say were
overrun by rates.

“We saw dozens of men with papers in their hand saying they were suffering from
depression, anxiety disorders, and had suicidal dispositions; terrified women at risk of
sexual violence in a European country that should be providing them with safety,”
Spatharidou said.
The government has also promised to speed up the processing of asylum claims by
streamlining procedures and hiring additional staff and translators. But new arrivals on
Lesbos and other islands are far outpacing the number of people being transported to the
mainland on compassionate grounds or because their asylum applications have been
approved.
Spread over a hillside, Moria’s shoebox-shaped trailers and tents are home to refugees
from Syria, Iraq, Congo, and over 50 other of the world’s black spots of war and hardship.
The camp, crowded but still generally kept in good order, spills into the neighboring fields,
where asylum seekers _ mostly African men _ have little hope of leaving.

Serafin from Togo, who was too afraid to appear on camera or give his last name, sleeps in a
child-sized bunk bed. There are 70 more bunks like his wrapped in gray blankets for privacy and
crammed into a single tent they call Little Turkey.
“It’s not easy, not easy at all. You can see where we sleep. And the smell,” he said, abruptly
overcome by melancholy when asked about his prospects. “I don’t know what will happen. I
miss my family.”
The island containment policy started two years ago, when the massive flow of migrants was
halted. The EU encouraged countries on the route west to close their borders, asked NATO to
patrol the eastern Aegean Sea, and pledged 6 billion euros ($7.1 billion) to Turkey to hold back
migrants and accept deportations from Greece.
EU countries accepted 22,000 refugees from Greece since the agreement between the EU and
Turkey was reached, while just 2,000 were deported to Turkey. That failed to offset new arrivals,
and more than 16,000 migrants remain on the islands while more than 40,000 are on the
mainland. A planned new round of resettlement has been complicated by the refusal of several
EU members including Hungary and Poland to join the scheme.

Dimitris Vitsas, Greece’s migration minister,
told parliament the new measures will
need several months to take full effect.
“A period of difficultly lies ahead. We are
fully aware of that fact,” he warned
lawmakers.
Vitsas traveled to Lesbos last week, along
with another 19 members of the Cabinet
and the prime minister, to promise more
help to the island, from improvements in
the ambulance service to faster farm
subsidy payments.
In a town hall meeting, Vitsas was berated
by island residents complaining about
petty crimes that have risen since the
camps opened, and others who said they
felt their goodwill toward people fleeing
war had been exploited by Greek and
European policy-makers.

Best friends, they grew up together. When rebels attacked, they fought together. Eighteen years
old and without a day of military training, they picked up Kalashnikovs and went to defend the
front line in Yemen’s southern city of Aden.
It was a rite of passage for Osama Ahmed and Ahmed Saleh, a moment for the teens to prove
their manhood in a society where every man has a gun and is expected to know how to use it.
The day he left for battle, Osama said his mother told him, “Son, I worry about you and want
you near me. But if every mother thinks this way, no one will go and fight for us ... Do not leave
your friends.”
The 2015 Battle for Aden turned out to be a brutal, scarring experience. Today, three years later,
Osama and Ahmed wander a shattered city, disillusioned. They have no jobs, hopes or
prospects. Nights, they sit on the beach and watch the moon on the waves of the Arabian Sea,
chewing qat _ a narcotic leaf _ and dreaming of leaving Yemen.

“My friends and I, all we think about these days is how to get out,” Osama said. “It doesn’t feel like it will get any better in our lifetime.”
Yemen’s civil war has chewed up and spat out a generation of youth. Fighters on all sides are often minors, some as young as 12, dragged
into what many see as a cynical fight between Iranian-backed rebels known as Houthis and a U.S.-backed coalition led by Saudi Arabia
nominally supporting the government. Three years of war with no end in sight has wrecked Yemen, causing death, displacement, economic
collapse, hunger and disease.
The Battle of Aden began in March 2015, when the Houthis, who overran the north the previous year, stormed south and attacked Aden, the
last bastion of the government of President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi.
For Osama, Ahmed and their friends, it wasn’t a fight for Hadi, it was for the south against the north; southern Yemen was once independent
and separatist sentiment remains powerful. So they joined other volunteers, militiamen and pro-Hadi army units to battle the rebels.
They took positions in Khormaksar, a neighborhood blocking the way to the heart of Aden, which stands at the end of a peninsula offshore.
There were 14 in Osama’s group, armed with seven automatic rifles that they rotated among themselves.
They and the others stood little chance. Rebels blasted them with tanks and artillery and snipers. For weeks, the defenders were pushed
back neighborhood by neighborhood into the dead end of the peninsula. It was vicious urban fighting. Osama and Ahmed saw friends blown
apart by rockets and mines, along with women and children. They sweltered in summer heat, thirsty and despairing.
Finally, rescue came. Saudi Arabia and its Arab allies launched their campaign of airstrikes and sent weapons, money and training to pro-Hadi
fighters. With their backing, fighters were able to drive back the rebels.

Fighting has since moved to provinces north of Aden. But the city has only further fallen apart.
Militias pervade Aden and, as they multiply, corruption has proliferated. The United Arab Emirates has taken
advantage of the fight and now dominates the south, squeezing out its ostensive ally, Hadi. Over the past year,
open warfare has broken out in Aden’s streets between pro-UAE and pro-Hadi militias.
To Osama and Ahmed, any veneer of a patriotic fight is gone; all they see is greed and self-interest. “We had
hopes and dreams,” Osama said. “(But) we’ve realized that everyone is running toward power and fame.”
“It’s a war over money,” Ahmed said. For everyone else, “there are no salaries, no food, no water.”
The most reliable employment is as a fighter in one of the militias, flush with funds from their international
patrons. Otherwise, jobless men hang around all day in the streets.
Mohammed Abu Hassan, a 30-year-old who also fought in the Battle of Aden, can’t bear to look at a weapon.
“Everyone is killing everyone,” he said. “What did we gain out of all this? Nothing.”

People gather in front of the broken banks of the Patel dam near
Solai, Kenya, on May 10. At least 44 were dead and another 40
were missing Thursday after a dam swollen by weeks of seasonal
rains burst in Kenya's Rift Valley, sweeping away hundreds of
homes and sending people fleeing.
It was the deadliest single incident yet in the seasonal rains that
have killed more than 170 people in Kenya since March. The
floods hit as the East African nation was recovering from a severe
drought that affected half of the country.

Travel: A Photo Trip to Socotra ALAN TAYLOR APR 23, 2018 25 PHOTOS IN FOCUS Off the coast of Yemen, in the Arabian Sea, lies isolated Socotra Island, where hundreds of plants and animals have developed into species unique to the island. Socotra is the largest island in an archipelago that includes three other islands. The Socotra Archipelago has been isolated from any large landmass for millions of years, and is now home to a surprising display of biodiversity. Probably the best-known of its endemic flora is the dragon blood tree, with red-colored sap and tightly-clustered branches that look like roots turned upside down. Below, a collection of images of the landscape of Socotra, and the plants and animals that call it home. May 12, 2018 Pictures of the day - May 5 - May 11, 2018 3

  • 29. Zhou Xing Ci’s family have farmed poppies for as long as anyone remembers, scraping the flowers' sticky brown sap to produce opium. Along with many other farmers in the hills of eastern Myanmar, the crop – much of which ends up as heroin sold on foreign streets - has in recent years put Myanmar behind only Afghanistan as the world’s leading source of opium. • 30. Zhou walks across a small bridge outside his house surrounded by his mulberry farm. “That tradition stops with me,” Zhou, 42, told Reuters at his sturdy new timber house in Tangyan township, in the north of Shan State. Zhou is now in his third year raising silkworms rather than poppies, and says quicker profits have enabled his family - with six children - to upgrade from a bamboo hut. 22 APR 2018. LASHIO, MYANMAR. • 31. Silkworms fed with mulberry leaves. A Chinese company working with farmers like Zhou hopes the silk- producing larva can help the farmers, and their country, quit the drug. “Growing opium is too tough. It’s only one harvest every year and a rain can easily destroy a whole year’s work,” said Zhou. 24 APR 2018. LASHIO, MYANMAR. • 48. The price for opium has fallen, he said, and growing poppies risked running afoul of heavy- handed eradication efforts by Myanmar authorities. The price drop, alongside the rise of synthetic drugs like methamphetamine, has contributed to a 25 percent fall in the total area of Myanmar under poppy cultivation since 2015, according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). • 49. The U.N. agency has assisted more than 1,000 farmers to switch from opium to another cash crop, coffee, since 2014, said Troels Vester, UNODC country manager for Myanmar. Still, 41,000 hectares (101,313 acres) of poppy was planted in Myanmar last year, the agency said. Farmers in conflict areas were less likely to have moved to licit crops, it added. In the corner of Myanmar where Zhou lives, bordering China's Yunnan province, various armed groups operate and the law is barely enforced, providing a haven for opium traders, as well as heroin producers and meth-lab operators. 23 APR 2018. • 50. “It was nothing but poppy farms when we first arrived in this area in 2014,” said Wang Bing, 63, vice general manager of DH Silco Enterprise, the Chinese company working with farmers, navigating a winding dirt road in a four-wheel drive. The company is working with more than 1,800 families, who grow mulberry bushes to feed the silkworms on 2,000 hectares (5,000 acres) of land, producing at least 288,000 kg of cocoons to be exported to China each year, Wang said. • 52. Ethnic Palaung workers clean off trays for baby silkworms at a mulberry farm. Some villagers have moved to lower lying areas to take part. Others are now farming silkworms alongside other crops like watermelons. But old habits are hard to break. During Reuters’ last visit in April, Zhou’s children played with poppy-farming tools, and a small plot of poppy stalks grew next to his mulberry bushes. His neighbour was growing a small amount to feed his grandfather’s opium addiction, Zhou said. 24 APR 2018. LASHIO, MYANMAR. • 76. Europe’s migrant barrier nears breaking point MAY 4, 2018 At the heart of Moria, an overcrowded refugee camp on the Greek island of Lesbos, is a dark rectangular building ringed with police guards and coils of razor wire. Taking photographs of it is prohibited. It’s here that thousands of migrants are interviewed by asylum officers _ and ultimately informed whether they will ever be allowed to leave the island. Holding up a tattered asylum card that reads “Forbidden to travel outside Lesbos,” 40-year- old Syrian Ziad Rashid said he was supposed to be deported back to Turkey after he unsuccessfully appealed his failed application. But Turkey’s effective refusal to re-admit migrants means there’s nowhere he could go. “I’ve been here for two years,” says Rashid, struggling to find the words in broken Greek and English. “It’s a big problem.” May 4, 2018 GALLLERY PHOTOS May 12, 2018 Pictures of the day - May 5 - May 11, 2018 76

Hasan, no other name given, from Deir ez-Zor in Syria, who arrived in Greece six months ago, sits behind the net of his tent at a makeshift camp outside the official camp of Moria at the island of Lesbos on Wednesday, May 2, 2018. (AP Photo/Petros Giannakouris) Lesbos is facing a fourth summer of crisis. It’s one of five Greek islands near the coast of Turkey being used by the European Union to form a barrier to migration after more than a million people came through here in 2015-16, heading to western Europe. But with 7,000 inhabitants, the refugee camp at Moria is now three times over capacity, and outbreaks of violence, often triggered by trivial disputes, are increasingly common. A clinic run by the aid group Doctors Without Borders helps treat the sick among the camp’s 2,000 children, but has to turn less serious cases away. Even so, more keep arriving: The number of island arrivals has surged this year from about 50 a day in 2017 to around 200 a day in recent weeks. Asylum applications are backed up by nearly three years, according to Lesbos’ regional governor. May 2, 2018 GALLLERY PHOTOS May 12, 2018 Pictures of the day - May 5 - May 11, 2018 77

(AP Photo/Petros Giannakouris) Many island residents are angry to be missing out on a tourism boom that’s helping the country emerge from a decade of financial crisis. Business owners closed their stores for 24 hours in protest at the government visit, and street protests turned violent. “We all welcomed the refugees. But there is a problem and it has to be taken seriously ... We have a good quality of life here and it’s been taken away,” said Akis Argiropoulos, a hotel manager in the island’s capital, Mytilene. “Without the proper facilities and policing, the island cannot handle all of this burden.” May 2, 2018 GALLLERY PHOTOS May 12, 2018 Pictures of the day - May 5 - May 11, 2018 80
  • 81. Islanders hold a placard which reads in Greek "SOS Moria. Solution now" referring to the Moria refugee camp, in a protest during a visit by Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on the northeastern Aegean island of Lesbos on Thursday, May 3, 2018 "(Migrants) enter illegally, they have to leave" one of the protesters shouted. Islanders are angry at Greek and European Union migration policy, which has left thousands of people stranded on the island. (AP Photo/Petros Giannakouris) Currently, asylum seekers on five Aegean Sea islands _ Lesbos, Chios, Samos, Leros, and Kos _ are banned from traveling onto the Greek mainland as part of the European Union’s controversial “containment policy.” That’s causing severe overcrowding at the islands’ camps, and the government has faced legal challenges and protests against the measure. Meanwhile, to try and bypass the islands, an even higher number of migrants and refugees is now crossing Greece’s heavily militarized land border with Turkey in the northeast of the country. That has forced the Greece to overhaul its policy, and parliament is now debating draft legislation aimed at easing pressure on the islands. Under the proposal, migrants would be allowed to move to camps on the Greek mainland, but they would remain under restriction and could be banned from leaving the regions of the country where they are placed. (AP Photo/Petros Giannakouris) The plan has already drawn fire from human rights groups which argue that containment is to blame for poor living conditions on the islands. “This situation causes distress, violates people’s rights, and insults the dignity of some of the world’s most vulnerable people. It’s an open wound for Greece and human rights,” Dimitra Spatharidou, from the Greek office of Amnesty International, told a parliamentary committee. Amnesty observers recently visited island camps, and found hundreds of people sleeping in makeshift tents, children sleeping in unsupervised sites, and some resting in fields they say were overrun by rates. • 83. “We saw dozens of men with papers in their hand saying they were suffering from depression, anxiety disorders, and had suicidal dispositions; terrified women at risk of sexual violence in a European country that should be providing them with safety,” Spatharidou said. The government has also promised to speed up the processing of asylum claims by streamlining procedures and hiring additional staff and translators. But new arrivals on Lesbos and other islands are far outpacing the number of people being transported to the mainland on compassionate grounds or because their asylum applications have been approved. Spread over a hillside, Moria’s shoebox-shaped trailers and tents are home to refugees from Syria, Iraq, Congo, and over 50 other of the world’s black spots of war and hardship. The camp, crowded but still generally kept in good order, spills into the neighboring fields, where asylum seekers _ mostly African men _ have little hope of leaving. • 88. Serafin from Togo, who was too afraid to appear on camera or give his last name, sleeps in a child-sized bunk bed. There are 70 more bunks like his wrapped in gray blankets for privacy and crammed into a single tent they call Little Turkey. “It’s not easy, not easy at all. You can see where we sleep. And the smell,” he said, abruptly overcome by melancholy when asked about his prospects. “I don’t know what will happen. I miss my family.” The island containment policy started two years ago, when the massive flow of migrants was halted. The EU encouraged countries on the route west to close their borders, asked NATO to patrol the eastern Aegean Sea, and pledged 6 billion euros ($7.1 billion) to Turkey to hold back migrants and accept deportations from Greece. EU countries accepted 22,000 refugees from Greece since the agreement between the EU and Turkey was reached, while just 2,000 were deported to Turkey. That failed to offset new arrivals, and more than 16,000 migrants remain on the islands while more than 40,000 are on the mainland. A planned new round of resettlement has been complicated by the refusal of several EU members including Hungary and Poland to join the scheme. We are fully aware of that fact,” he warned lawmakers. Vitsas traveled to Lesbos last week, along with another 19 members of the Cabinet and the prime minister, to promise more help to the island, from improvements in the ambulance service to faster farm subsidy payments. In a town hall meeting, Vitsas was berated by island residents complaining about petty crimes that have risen since the camps opened, and others who said they felt their goodwill toward people fleeing war had been exploited by Greek and European policy-makers. • 271. Best friends, they grew up together. When rebels attacked, they fought together. Eighteen years old and without a day of military training, they picked up Kalashnikovs and went to defend the front line in Yemen’s southern city of Aden. It was a rite of passage for Osama Ahmed and Ahmed Saleh, a moment for the teens to prove their manhood in a society where every man has a gun and is expected to know how to use it. The day he left for battle, Osama said his mother told him, “Son, I worry about you and want you near me. But if every mother thinks this way, no one will go and fight for us ... Do not leave your friends.” The 2015 Battle for Aden turned out to be a brutal, scarring experience. Today, three years later, Osama and Ahmed wander a shattered city, disillusioned. They have no jobs, hopes or prospects. Nights, they sit on the beach and watch the moon on the waves of the Arabian Sea, chewing qat _ a narcotic leaf _ and dreaming of leaving Yemen. • 273. “My friends and I, all we think about these days is how to get out,” Osama said. “It doesn’t feel like it will get any better in our lifetime.” Yemen’s civil war has chewed up and spat out a generation of youth. Fighters on all sides are often minors, some as young as 12, dragged into what many see as a cynical fight between Iranian-backed rebels known as Houthis and a U.S.-backed coalition led by Saudi Arabia nominally supporting the government. Three years of war with no end in sight has wrecked Yemen, causing death, displacement, economic collapse, hunger and disease. The Battle of Aden began in March 2015, when the Houthis, who overran the north the previous year, stormed south and attacked Aden, the last bastion of the government of President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi. For Osama, Ahmed and their friends, it wasn’t a fight for Hadi, it was for the south against the north; southern Yemen was once independent and separatist sentiment remains powerful. For weeks, the defenders were pushed back neighborhood by neighborhood into the dead end of the peninsula. It was vicious urban fighting. Osama and Ahmed saw friends blown apart by rockets and mines, along with women and children. They sweltered in summer heat, thirsty and despairing. Finally, rescue came. Saudi Arabia and its Arab allies launched their campaign of airstrikes and sent weapons, money and training to pro-Hadi fighters. With their backing, fighters were able to drive back the rebels. • 275. Fighting has since moved to provinces north of Aden. But the city has only further fallen apart. Militias pervade Aden and, as they multiply, corruption has proliferated. The United Arab Emirates has taken advantage of the fight and now dominates the south, squeezing out its ostensive ally, Hadi. Over the past year, open warfare has broken out in Aden’s streets between pro-UAE and pro-Hadi militias. To Osama and Ahmed, any veneer of a patriotic fight is gone; all they see is greed and self-interest. “We had hopes and dreams,” Osama said. “(But) we’ve realized that everyone is running toward power and fame.” “It’s a war over money,” Ahmed said. For everyone else, “there are no salaries, no food, no water.” The most reliable employment is as a fighter in one of the militias, flush with funds from their international patrons. Otherwise, jobless men hang around all day in the streets. Mohammed Abu Hassan, a 30-year-old who also fought in the Battle of Aden, can’t bear to look at a weapon. “Everyone is killing everyone,” he said. “What did we gain out of all this? Nothing.” May 12, 2018 Pictures of the day - May 5 - May 11, 2018 275
