The Maui Mayor has asked airlines to voluntarily reduce passenger capacity to the island to combat overtourism and airport congestion as the sudden large influx of tourism has not given residents sufficient time to prepare even as health restrictions remain. A spokesman for the mayor noted that many hospitality businesses are still struggling to fully staff operations to provide high quality customer service and asked that visitors temper their enthusiasm for the island with respect, courtesy and aloha.
