Types of Statements
Statement
•A statement is a sentence that says
something is true,
Example:
Pizza is delicious.
Mathematical Statement
•A mathematical statement is either true or false.
•Any statement which is predicted to be both cannot
be a mathematical statement.
For understanding this we take three sentences:
1.The first prime minister of India was a woman.
2.Blue Whale is the largest animal on Earth.
3.Girls are intelligent than boys.
Types of Statements
1.Conditional Statement
Converse
Inverse
Contrapositive
2.Biconditional Statement
CONDITIONAL STATEMENT
Example:
1. If two distinct lines intersect, then they
intersect at exactly one point.
2. If two points lie in a plane, then the
line containing them lies in the plane.
3. If 2(x + 5) = 12, then x = 1.
CONDITIONAL STATEMENT
Written as an If – then Statement.
A conditional Statement has two parts:
1. One part begins with “If” which is
called the hypothesis
2. The other part begins with “then”
which is called the conclusion
Identify the hypothesis and the conclusion
Example:
1. If two distinct lines intersect, then they
intersect at exactly one point.
Hypothesis:
Conclusion:
two distinct lines intersect
they intersect at exactly one point.
Identify the hypothesis and the conclusion
2. If two points lie in a plane, then the line
containing them lies in the plane.
Hypothesis:
Conclusion:
two points lie in a plane
then the line containing them lies in
the plane
Identify the hypothesis and the conclusion
3. If 2(x + 5) = 12, then x = 1.
Hypothesis:
Conclusion:
If 2(x + 5) = 12
x = 1
Identify the hypothesis and the conclusion
4. If the measurement of an angle is exactly 900,
then it is a right angle.
Hypothesis:
Conclusion:
the measurement of an angle is exactly 900
it is a right angle
Rewrite the following statements in if – then form
1. A quadrilateral is a polygon.
Answer: If a figure is a quadrilateral, then it is a polygon.
2. A prime number has 1 and itself as factors.
Answer: If a number is prime then its factors are 1
and itself.
Rewrite the following statements in if – then form
3. Collinear points are points that lie on the same line.
Answer: If points are collinear, then it lie on the
same line.
4. A square is a rectangle.
Answer: If a figure is a square, then it is a
rectangle.
ACTIVITY #1 :Conditional Statement
Underline the hypothesis and box the conclusion.
1. If you live in Manila, then you live in the
Philippines.
2. If you drink milk, then you grow.
3. If 4x – 1 = 11, then x = 3.
4. If a number is a whole number, then it is an integer.
5. If the figure is a square, then it is not a triangle.
