The document is a master's thesis that describes the development of an integrated underwater acoustic localization and communication modem. A line array transducer was designed and built using piezoelectric elements to enable beamforming capabilities. Algorithms for localization using time difference of arrival and time of arrival were implemented. Digital phase shift keying modulation was used for communication. The modem was tested in a pool environment and showed the ability to localize, communicate, and mitigate echoes through beamforming, although echoes still impacted performance.
