This document presents psychologist A.H. Maslow's theory of human motivation, which proposes that human needs are arranged hierarchically from basic physiological needs to more advanced psychological needs. It describes the basic physiological needs like hunger, thirst, and homeostasis, and notes that fulfilling these allows for safety needs around security and stability to emerge. The document uses observations of infants and children to explain how threats to safety through things like pain, illness, unpredictability or family problems can completely dominate their motivation. It proposes that satisfying lower needs allows for higher psychological needs to emerge as primary motivators.
