How Race, Age and Gender Shape Attitudes Towards Mental HealthThinkNow
Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

2. • İnsan tələbatlarının quruluşu qanunlarını dərk edənlərdən birincisi, amerikan psixoloqu humanist
psixologiyanın banilərindən biri Abraham Maslou (1908-1970) olmuşdur. İlk dəfə o, öz konsepsiyasını

3. • fizioloji (vital) tələbatlar — insanların təkrar istehsalına, qidaya, tənəffüsə, fiziki hərəkətlərə, geyimə,
yaşayış yerinə, istirahətə olan tələbatlar;
— ekzistensial tələbatlar və ya mövcud olma (var olma, yaşama) təhlükəsizliyinə tələbat. Onların iki
növü vardır — fiziki və iqtisadi. Fiziki təhlükəsizlik sağlamlığın qorunub saxlanılmasına, insanın şəxsiyyəti
və həyatı üzərində zorakılığın olmamasına olan tələbatdır. Ümumiləşdirilmiş şəkildə demək olar ki,
söhbət sabahkı günə əminlikdən, həyat fəaliyyəti şərtlərinin sabitliyindən, müəyyən qaydaya (nizama)
tələbatdan, həmçinin ədalətsiz (haqsız) rəftardan (idarəetmədən) qaçmağa cəhddən gedir. İqtisadi
tələbatlar əmək sferasında əldə edilir: məşğulluq zəmanəti (təminatı), bədbəxt hallardan sığortalanma,
daimi yaşayış vəsaitinə (əmək haqqına) malik olmaq arzusu;
— sosial tələbatlar bizim kollektiv təbiətimizdən irəli gəlir. Biz dostluq və bağlılıq (məhəbbət), qrupa
mənsub olma, ünsiyyət, formal və ya qeyri-formal təşkilatda iştirak, başqası haqqında qayğı və ozümüzə
diqqət istəyirik (arzulayırıq).
— prestij tələbatlar — “əhəmiyyətli başqaları” tərəfindən hörmətə, xidməti inkişafa, nailiyyətə, yüksək
statusa, müstəqilliyə və tanınmaya (nüfuza, qəbul edilməyə, hörmətə) olan tələbatlar. Onları həm də
qiymətə olan tələbatlar və ya eqoistik tələbatlar adlandırırlar, çünki onlar özünə (özümüzə) yönəlmişlər.
— mənəvi tələbatlar — yaradıcılıq vasitəsilə özünüifadəyə olan tələbatlar. Söhbət insanın qabil
olduğu hər şeyi reallaşdırmaq tələbatından gedir.
4. • Əsas tələbatlar filogenetik, yəni insanın böyüməsi (yaşa dolması) dərəcəsinə görə və ontogenetik, yəni
mövcudluğun zəruri şərti kimi onların reallaşdırılması dərəcəsinə görə bir-birinin ardınca gəlir. A.Maslou fizioloji
və ekzistensial tələbatları ilkin (anadangəlmə) sosial, prestij və mənəvi tələbatları — ikinci dərəcəli (sosial
qazanılmış) tələbatlar adlandırırdı; tələbatların yüksəlməsi (qalxması) prosesi özündə ilkin tələbatların ikinci
dərəcəli tələbatlarla əvəz edilməsi prosesini ifadə edir.
Ancaq öz özlüyündə motivləşdirici (motivasiya) amillərinin təsnifatı A.Maslounun ən qiymətli və maraqlı tapıntısı
deyildir. Bu cür cəhdlər başqa alimlər tərəfindən də edilmişdir. A.Maslounun konsepsiyasının məziyyəti onun
“hərəkətverici qüvvəsində” – iyerarxiya prinsipindədir: hər bir yeni səviyyənin tələbatları yalnız əvvəlki (bundan
qabaqkı) tələblər (ehtiyaclar, tələbatlar) ödənildikdən sonra aktual (ən zəruri) olurlar. Buna görə iyerarxiya
prinsipini həm də dominanta prinsipi adlandırırlar. A.Maslou fərz edirdi ki, tələbatın ödənilməsi motiv və ya arzu
(niyyət, məqsəd, meyl) kimi çıxış edir. Yalnız ödənilməmiş (qane edilməmiş) tələbat fərdin davranışını səfərbər
edir, fərdi onun ödənilməsi üçün zəruri olan fəaliyyəti göstərməyə məcbur edir.
5. • Bədii şəkildə desək, insan sivilizasiyasını çox təmin olunmamış (məmnuniyyətsiz) insanlar yaratmışlar.
Tələbatın real potensialı (təsir qüvvəsi) onun ödənilməsi dərəcəsinin (dərəcəsindən asılı olaraq)
funksiyasıdır. Tələbatın intensivliyi onun tutduğu yer ilə bağlıdır. Fizioloji tələbatlar ilkindir və heç
olmazsa minimal səviyyədə ödənilməyənə kimi davranışın dominantı kimi çıxış edirlər, bundan sonra
növbəti səviyyələrin (məsələn, təhlükəsisliyə və s.) tələbatları üstünlük təşkil edirlər (hakim olurlar). Ən
aşağı (adi, primitiv) tələbatlar ancaq bir-birindən deyil (nəfəs almaq aclıqdan asılı deyildir), həm də ən
yüksək tələbatlardan asılı deyildir. Əksinə, yüksək tələbatlar aşağı tələbatlardan asılıdır. Buna görə də,

6. • Sosial nöqteyi-nəzərdən insanı ünsiyyətə olan tələbatın ödənilməsi (məs: dostların və ya tanışların
seçilməsində) üsullarına nisbətən, qidaya üstünlük vermə (o, əti və ya balığı xoşlayırmı) daha az
xarakterizə edir. Yüksək tələbatlar həm də insanların differensiasiyası üsulu kimi çıxış edirlər. Bundan
başqa, onlar digər tələbatlara nisbətən insanın şəxsiyyətinin formalaşmasına daha çox təsir göstərirlər.
Öz növbəsində, tələbatlar nə qədər yüksəkdirsə, onların formalaşmasında insanın özünün rolu bir o
qədər əhəmiyyətlidir (böyükdür). Qarşılıqlı istiqamətlənmiş proses alınır: tələbatlar insanı hərəkətə
gətirir (yönəldir, istiqamətləndirir), o, isə onları formalaşdırır. Şəxsiyyətin tələbatları nə qədər
yüksəkdirsə, tələbatların formalaşması prosesi bir o qədər mürəkkəbdir. Məhz buna görə, yüksək təhsil

Bütün tələbatlar tsiklik funksionallaşırlar, yəni təkrar olunurlar. Əgər söhbət status tələbatlarından
gedirsə, onda öz karyerasının başlanğıcında (əvvəlində) insan azla: aşağı əmək haqqı ilə, digərləri ilə
bərabər statusla kifayətlənir. Ancaq xidməti inkişaf dərəcəsinə görə iddialar (tələblər) artır, əvvəlki
bərabər status işçini artıq qane etmir, o, seçilməyə daha nüfuzlu olmağa, yüksək əmək haqqı almağa,
hörmətli (nüfuzlu) tanışlara malik olmağa çalışır, və ya yatırılmış (sakitləşdirilmiş, azaldılmış) aclıq, bir
müddətdən sonra insan aclıq hiss edən zaman yenidən özünü göstərəcəkdir və hər şey dairə üzrə
gedəcəkdir.
7. • “İnsan motivasiyasının nəzəriyyəsi” məqaləsində A.Maslou yazırdı ki, orta vətəndaş öz fizioloji
tələbatlarının (birinci səviyyə) təxminən 85%-i, təhlükəsizliyə tələbatlarının (ikinci səviyyə) – 70%-i, sevği
və bağlılığa tələbatlarının (üçüncü səviyyə) – 50%-i, özünüqiymətləndirmə tələbatlarının (dördüncü
səviyyə) – 40%-i, və nəhayət, özünüreallaşdırma tələbatlarının – 10%-i ödəyir. Maslounun fikrincə,
müasir kapitalist cəmiyyətinin (məs., ABŞ) ideal-tipik modeli bu cürdür. Maslounun ideyalarını inkişaf
etdirərək, amerika sosioloqları P.Hersi (Xersi) və K.Blanşard müxtəlif cəmiyyətlərdə vətəndaşların
tələbatlarının ödənilməsi səviyyəsini təsvir edən model təklif etmişdir. Cəmi üç variant mümkündür.
